Delaware State was able to send the match to a tiebreaker but Coppin State posted the five-set victory, 3-2, in MEAC North women’s volleyball on Thursday night at Memorial Hall.
The Eagles won the match by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 15-11 in the first of a home-and-away two-match series with the Hornets.
Delaware State, which had a three-match winning streak snapped, is now 3-2 in the MEAC, 7-3 overall while Coppin improved to 6-1 MEAC, 7-4 overall after winning its sixth in a row.
Paola Caten had 19 kills for the Hornets, Miajavon Coleman had 17 and Chudear Tut picked up 10. Kareemah Hopkins collected 48 assists while Ashley Roman contributed 32 digs.
The two squads play again tonight in Baltimore.
Women’s lacrosse
Longwood 16, Delaware State 4: The Lancers led wire-to-wire while out-shooting Delaware State, 33-12, on Thursday.
Longwood opened the game on an 11-0 run to take a commanding lead. Mica Lambert netted a pair of goals for the Hornets with Nina Dillard and Rossella Nardi adding the others.
DelState goalie Moe Brown made nine saves.
