North Carolina Central didn’t need a last-second shot to defeat Delaware State in the second meeting between the teams this season.

Zacarry Douglas led four NCCU double-figure scorers with 19 points in the Eagles’ 87-52 victory at McLendon-McDougald Gym Monday evening.

The victory completed season sweep of the Hornets by North Carolina Central, which defeated Delaware State 71-70 on a last second shot in the first meeting between the teams on Jan. 14 at DSU’s Memorial Hall.

Randy Miller added 14 points, highlighted by four three-pointers (4-6), while Raasean Davis and Larry McKnight, Jr. contributed 10 points each for the Eagles.

Kevin Larkin was the only Delaware State scorer to reach double-figures, tying for game-high honors with 19 points. Larkin also led all players with 10 rebounds to give him a team-high nine double-doubles this season.

The score was 9-9 before NC Central took control with an 18-0 run during a five-minute stretch of the first half. McKnight capped off the run with a tip-in basket to give the Eagles a 27-9 lead with 10:52 left in the half.

The Hornets missed each of their 11 shots and committed a turnover during the NCCU run.

DSU trailed 49-30 at the half.

The Eagles led by as many as 40 points in the second half, and outscored the Hornets 38-22 in the final 20 minutes.

NC Central shot 50 percent for the game, connecting on 32 of their 64 shots from the field, including 10 of 26 from three-point range (38.5 percent).

The Hornets hit just 21 of their 67 shots (31.3 percent) and only four-of-27 from beyond the arc (14.8 percent).

NCCU won the rebound battle 44-38.

WOMEN, North Carolina Central 65, Delaware State 64: The Hornets missed three shots in the final minute as the Eagles held on for the MEAC win.

DSU names Atkinson coach: Delaware State has turned to a nationally-respected veteran coach to lead its women’s volleyball program with the hiring of Dr. Bruce Atkinson as head coach.

Atkinson’s 11-year career as a college head coach is highlighted by a 217-116 overall record (.652 win percentage), multiple conference championships, five Coach-of-the-Year awards and six 20-win seasons.

Atkinson most recently served as coach at Winthrop (S.C.) University from 2013 to 2018. His 98 wins at Winthrop are third-most in the 32-year history of the program.

From 2010 to 2013, Atkinson was head coach at Towson. In 2012, he led the Tigers to the Colonial Athletic Association championship and a 25-4 overall record, including a 12-0 mark in conference regular-season matches.

He earned two CAA Coach-of-the-Year awards (2011, 2012) while at Towson.

Prior to his tenure at Towson, Atkinson was coach at the University of Hawaii at Hilo from 2007 to 2010. In three seasons, he was Pacific West Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 2009 and ’09, and led the Vulcans at a 69-13 overall record (.812), including a 39-5 mark in conference play (.872).

Atkinson began his college coaching career as coach at the University of Texas at Brownsville, where he led the Ocelots to a Red River Athletic Conference championship and was named league Coach-of-the-Year after posting a 27-10 overall record and 10-1 conference mark during the 2006-07 season.

Delaware State was 2-27 overall and winless in 10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matches during the 2018 campaign. In the last six seasons, the Hornets have a 12-153 won-loss record (6-64 MEAC) and have failed to qualify for the conference championship tournament since 2010.
