Both the Delaware State and Delaware women’s soccer teams open their fall seasons at home Thursday.
The Hornets host Hartford at 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium while he Blue Hens host George Mason at 7 p.m.
DSU, which played six matches in the spring, is slated to play 10 of its 17 games this season at home.
Delaware State returns seven starters from the spring, led by midfielders Mary O’Connor, Lexis Henry and Gabriela Cabrera. Lydia Daids and newcomer Bri Hallo will also compete for playing time in the middle.
This will be Delaware State’s fifth meeting with Hartford. The Hawks won the previous four contests, including a 6-0 victory the last time the teams met in 2019 in Hartford.
Delaware, which played seven games in the spring, has won its last two openers.
College volleyball
Hens’ Seemans earns CAA honor: Delaware’s Savannah Seemans was named to the preseason All-CAA team while the Blue Hens were picked to finish sixth in the league.
Seemans, a CAA All-Rookie team selection in the spring, led Delaware in kills (100) and finished second in kills per set (2.70) and digs per set (3.27). In 10 matches, the Newark native posted three double-doubles.
The Hens open the season on Aug. 27 in Philadelphia as they take on defending MAAC champion Rider at 2:30 p.m., before battling Temple at 7 p.m.
College soccer
UD men sixth in CAA poll: Delaware defender Aron Adalsteinsson was named to the CAA preseason all-conference team as the Blue Hens were voted sixth in the league’s men’s soccer poll.
Adalsteinsson was a third-team All-CAA selection this spring. Delaware allowed just two goals during the three matches in which he competed, including posting a pair of shutouts.
The Hens, who finished 2-1-2 during the spring season, open their season on Aug. 26 with a 7:30 p.m. game at Rutgers.
College athletics
Six local athletes at Albright: Six former Henlopen Conference athletes are competing for Albright’s NCAA Division III programs this fall.
That group includes, in football: Ryan MacFarlane (Smyrna), J’Sean Matthews (Sussex Tech) and Javontae Wayman (Dover); in women’s tennis: Angelina Gaglio (Polytech) and Macie Littleton (Smyrna); and in field hockey: Chelsea Johnson (Dover). Also, Isaiah Shockley of Laurel, who played at Kent Island High, is playing football for the Lions.
