Behind five shutout innings from freshman Billy Sullivan, Delaware blanked Charleston Southern, 1-0, in baseball on Sunday afternoon.
In the series-clinching victory, the Blue Hens received a second-inning solo home run from senior captain Diaz Nardo (Cape Henlopen) for the only run Delaware would need. On the mound, three Delaware (2-1) pitchers limited Charleston Southern (1-2) to just four hits, striking out 13 batters.
Sullivan, a St. Mark’s grad, pitched the first five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out nine. The sixth and seventh innings belonged to redshirt junior Clay Conaway (Sussex Central), who also made his debut for the Hens Sunday, throwing a pair of scoreless innings.
Senior Colman Villa pitched the final two innings for the Blue Hens, earning his sixth career save.
“Today was a great first career start for Billy Sullivan,” said Delaware coach Jim Sherman. “He had an electric fastball that was sitting in the mid-90s, and was able to mix in some great curveballs to strike out batters.”
Savannah State 8, Delaware State 1: The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second before the Tigers scored final eight runs of the contest.
Dover High grad Garrett Lawson scored the run for DSU (1-2) and also struck out eight in 4.1 innings. John Weglarz had two of the Hornets’ seven hits.
