Local roundup: Hawks silence Panthers, Royals topple Knights as spring season swings into gear

James Breen gave up only one hit and struck out eight in four innings as St. Georges opened the season with a 13-0 victory over Polytech High in non-conference baseball on Tuesday afternoon.

Robert Stewart went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI to pace the Hawks’ seven-hit attack, St. Georges led 6-0 after three innings.

The Panthers finished with three hits in the six-inning contest.

Dover 2, Woodbridge 0: Cole Greene and Hunter Chambers combined on a three-hit shutout for the Senators.

Dover, which got doubles from Chambers, Brandon Yoder and Connor Ridgway, scored both its runs in the third.

The Blue Raiders’ Seth Smart and William Hague also threw a three-hitter.

Smyrna 10, Mt. Pleasant 5: The Eagles erupted for five runs in the top of the eighth to win their season opener on Tuesday.

Connor Wilson and James Tassone each collected three hits to pace Smyrna’s 14-hit attack while Sean Keener added two hits and three stolen bases. Reliever Jake Macey, who had two hits, earned the victory.

Delmar 9, Caesar Rodney 0: Winning pitcher Andrew Callaway struck out 10 and didn’t walk a batter in six shutout innings for the Wildcats.

Tucker Pierson went 3-for-3 while Rider Keidel was 2-for-2 with a double.

Sussex Tech 9, Lake Forest 4: The Ravens scored the game’s final nine runs to overcome a 4-0 deficit.

Malikye Wells went 4-for-5 with three RBI while Dakota Culley and Carson Mears also had multiple hits for the Ravens. Grant Allen pitched two shutout innings to earn the victory.

Adam Schiff went 2-for-3 for the Spartans.

Sussex Central 16, Delmarva Christian 1: The Golden Knights broke open the contest with 11 runs in the second.

Brendan Anderson and Joaquin Rodriguez Costa both homered while four pitchers combined on a five-inning one-hitter.

Sussex Academy 16, Great Oaks 0: Wyatt Skinner, Whitman Stout and Aiden Cannon combined to pitch a five-inning no-hitter for the Seahawks.

Softball

Delmarva Christian 4, Sussex Central 1: The Royals rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth to knock off the Golden Knights.

Lilliana Showacre pitched a four-hitter for Delmarva Christian, giving up only a first-inning run.

Madge Layfield also pitched a four-hitter for Central, which reached the DIAA state finals a year ago.

Lake Forest 3, St. Georges 2: Carley Rebuck singled home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth as the Spartans (2-0) won their second game in as many days.

Trailing 2-0, Lake Forest scored all three of its runs in the sixth as Katelyn Bell went 2-for-3. Winning pitcher Carah Sumpter threw a six-hitter and struck out eight.

Woodbridge 10, Sussex Academy 3: The Blue Raiders trailed 3-1 before erupting for eight runs in the fourth.

Caroline Scott (3-for-4, triple, 2 runs), Laney Scott (2 hits), Payton Keeler (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Kalli Chelton (2 hits) all paced Woodbridge’s 12-hit attack. Parker Keeler and winning pitcher Emily Peterson also had two RBI and scored a run.

Caelynn Jorgensen had an RBI and scored a run for the Seahawks.

Milford 19, Newark 0: Khyliah Reynolds tossed a five-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Buccaneers.

Lillie Harrison went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Reynolds, Ashley Bullock and Cheyenne Frieze all scored three runs.

Seaford 20, Early College 0: The Blue Jays shut out the Hornets in their opener.

Rising Sun, Md. 12, Laurel 5: The Bulldogs dropped a non-conference decision in their season opener.

Girls’ soccer

Sussex Academy 1, Sussex Tech 0: Sienna Serpico’s goal in the 34th minute gave the Seahawks the victory

Goalie Emma Westbook made six saves for Sussex Academy, which held advantages of 11-7 in shots and 8-4 in corner kicks.

Ebony Wilson made eight saves for the Ravens.

Smyrna 6, Lake Forest 1: Desiree Zapata netted the Eagles’ first three goals in the season-opening win.

Smyrna, which reached the DIAA Division I state finals last spring, also got goals from Jade Balon, Jocelyn Tejeda and Marlayna Pennington (1 assist).
Lillian Wood netted a first-half goal for the Spartans.

Dover 9, Seaford 0: Josselyn Ventura (2 assists) and Jamie Bishop (1 assist) tallied three goals each in the Senators’ victory.

Dover also got goals from A’nya Hopins (1 assist), Laci Jacobs (1 assist) and Felecia Kanakai.

Caesar Rodney 6, Delmar 1: Kailyn Maull netted three goals as the Riders picked up their second win in two days.

Allyson Durham (1 assist), Olivia Hudson and Madelyn Reed also scored goals for CR, which led 3-0 at halftime. The Riders finished with advantages of 20-5 in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks.

Baylie Phillips scored for the Wildcats.

Milford 4, Woodbridge 0: Lila Mergner tallied a goal in each half to pace the Buccaneers.

Bay Rothermel and Emily Thode also scored for Milford, which held advantages of 18-2 in shots and 8-0 in corner kicks.

St. Mark’s 9, Polytech 0: The Spartans tallied six first-half goals before downing the Panthers.

Boys’ lacrosse

First State Military 12, Newark Charter 8: The Bulldogs picked up a victory in their opener.

Appoquinimink 9, Smyrna 8: The Jaguars edged the Eagles in a non-conference contest.


Salisbury School, Md. 17, Sussex Central 6: The Golden Knights opened the season with a non-conference loss on Monday.

Girls’ lacrosse

Lake Forest 14, Milford 12: Sophomore Emma Massey tallied eight goals as the Spartans opened the season with a victory.

Parker Robbins added three goals with Ellie Biddle collecting two goals and a pair of assists. Giulia Sweet made 17 saves.

Freshman Hannah Zimmerman had eight goals for the Buccaneers with Bailey Masten scoring twice.

Smyrna 14, Appoquinimink 9: Samantha McMahon netted four goals with Reese Frank adding three in the Eagles’ win.

Cape Henlopen 19, Stephen Decatur, Md. 2: Elizabeth Rishko, Louise Rishko (2 assists) and Kelly Bragg (1 assist) scored four goals apiece to lead the Vikings.

Molly Mendes (5 assists) and Maren Buckaloo (4 assists) both scored twice for Cape, which led 13-0 at halftime.

College baseball

Delaware 9, Georgetown 8: J.J. Freeman belted a two-run walkoff homer over the rightfield fence in the bottom of the ninth to give the Blue Hens a dramatic win.

With Delaware trailing, 8-7, going into its last at-bat, Bryce Greenly (Milford) led off by reaching on a bunt single. Freeman then laced a pitch over the fence in right, his first homer as a Blue Hen, to set off the UD celebration.

Delaware (10-8), which had 13 hits, won for the sixth time in its last seven games. Freeman led the way with three hits and three RBI while Dominic Ragazzo, Joseph Carpenter and Gabe Dermott each added two hits.
