Local roundup: Gregory paces Smyrna boys past Cape; Lake girls clinch South title

Smyrna High out-scored Cape Henlopen by 11 points in the second half to pull away to a 57-47 victory over the Vikings in Henlopen North boys’ basketball on Wednesday night.

The Eagles finish in second place in the North with a 10-4 record in the division, 12-7 overall.

Senior Elisha Gregory poured in 29 points for Smyrna as he sank 12 of the Eagles’ 24 field goals. Majesti Carter added 15 points.

Cape Henlopen, which ends up 7-12, held a 29-28 halftime advantage. Brody Petersen and Zimere Bolden tallied nine points each.

Polytech 53, Sussex Central 30: The Panthers out-scored the Golden Knights, 17-4, in the fourth quarter to close out the Henlopen North victory.

Brandywine 75, Milford 63: The Buccaneers finish the season 11-9 after the loss.

Laurel 74, Woodbridge 72: The Bulldogs edged the Blue Raiders in the Henlopen South contest.

Henlopen title games at Dover: North champion Dover (16-3) will host South winner Seaford (16-4) in the Henlopen Conference boys’ basketball championship game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The girls’ championship game will also be played at Dover, with North champion Cape Henlopen and South champion Lake Forest playing at 1 p.m. Tickets are $8 for the doubleheader.

Dover and Seaford last met in last year’s DIAA state tournament with the Blue Jays winning, 59-57, In 2020, the Senators beat the Blue Jays, 63-47, in the state tourney.

Girls’ basketball

Lake Forest 62, Delmar 22: Gabrielle Almonte netted 20 points and Breanna Johnson had 18 as the Spartans clinched their first Henlopen South title since 1989.

Lake Forest (13-1 South, 17-3 overall) will face North champion Cape Henlopen in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dover.

Kadija Bundu added 10 points for the Spartans, who out-scored the Wildcats 36-6 in the second half. Lake Forest has won six games in a row.

Polytech 44, Sussex Central 18: Jasryn Scott-Cottman and Kallie Hopkins netted 12 points apiece as the Panthers finished the season with a record of 5-15.

Scott-Cottman hit four three-pointers for Polytech, which opened up a 23-10 lead by halftime.

The Golden Knights finish with a record of 4-16.

Appoquinimink 60, Smyrna 53: The Jaguars out-scored the Eagles, 22-11, in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory. Appo was 28-of-42 from the foul line

Glennyce James tallied 17 points, with five three-pointers, for Smyrna.

Delmarva Christian 68, Laurel 48: The Royals finish the regular season at 15-5 with the victory.

Red Lion Christian 60, Milford 19: The Buccaneers fell to the Lions in their season finale.

Swimming

Henlopen swimmers reach finals: A pair of Henlopen Conference swimmers qualified second in their events as the DIAA boys’ swimming state championship meet got underway at the University of Delaware on Wednesday evening.

Sussex Central’s Breyden Wright took second in the 100-yard butterfly (50.92) while Caesar Rodney’s Ryan Woodzell placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:49.76). Woodzell also was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.68) while Wright was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (53.96).

Other individual downstate swimmers to qualify for the finals are Cape Henlopen’s Brian Fleming (seventh, 5:07.05) and Holden Tighe (eighth, 5:11.26), both in the 500-yard freestyle; and Sussex Academy’s Jaxon Laux (fifth, 1:02.61) and Delmarva Christian’s Coleman Woodard (eighth, 1:04.4), both in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Henlopen relay teams that reached the finals are Cape’s Kevin Lewandowski, Andrew Criswell, Tighe and Josh Reinhold (fourth, 1:32.70), Sussex Academy’s Ty Hudson, Tyler Burger, Lex Johnson, Christian Wright (sixth, 1:34.39) and Indian River’s Max Forrey, Finn Bellistri, Alexander Arnold, Shane Hall (eighth, 1:35.08), all in the 200-yard freestyle relay; and Cape’s Tighe, Criswell, Fleming and Josh Turek (sixth, 3:25.92) in the 400-yard freestyle.

The girls’ preliminaries are slated for Thursday night with the finals being held on Saturday.

College football

Ex-Hen Papale drafted by USFL: Delaware football alum Vinny Papale was selected by the Tampa Bay Bandits in the inaugural United States Football League Draft on Wednesday.

Papale was drafted with the ninth pick of the 17th round.

A wide receiver, Papale signed with the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and spent time in mini-camp with the Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins. He then signed with the Montreal Alouettes in May 2020 but saw the Canadian Football League cancel its season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He most recently played for the Conquerers in 2021 during The Spring League season.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Delaware 14, LaSalle 9: Freshman Delaney McDaniel netted two goals and three assists as the Blue Hens (1-2) picked up their first win of the season.

College bowling

DSU’s Cummings earns two honors: Delaware State University freshman bowler Kelsey Cummings swept this week’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference bowling awards after being named both Rookie and Bowler.

Cummings led the Hornets to a second-place overall finish at the MEAC’s No. 2 tournament over the weekend with her first-place individual finish. She topped the 200-pin mark six different times during the tournament including a weekend-best 258.

Cummings knocked down a total of 1,927 pins averaging 214.11 per frame and was 100 percent for her single-pin spare conversions.
