Local roundup: Gill scores six as Dover tops Milford 17-12 in boys lacrosse

Senior Thomas Gill netted six goals and an assist to pace Dover High to a 17-12 victory over Milford in boys’ lacrosse on Monday evening.

The win was the second in a row for Dover, which improved to 5-1.

Demetrius Cave-Martin added four goals and two assists with Benjamin Niebrzydowski collecting three goals and a pair of assists.

Julian Dixon scored twice with Derrick Madison (5 assists) and Raeshawn Alexander (1 assist) adding the Senators’ other goals.

Goalie Anthony Tunnell made 11 saves.

Caesar Rodney 11, Queen Anne’s, Md. 10: Sean Wolleyhand tallied six goals and an assist as the Riders improved to 2-3.

Evan McCleary added three goals with James Cava and Zachary Davis scoring one goal each. Goalie Jacob Stant made 12 saves.

Woodbridge 18, Delmarva Christian 5: Lane Hill had five goals and a pair of assists as eight different Raiders scored in the victory.

Richard Massey (3 goals, 4 assists), Jacob Webb (2 g, 2 a), Corey Hastings (2 g, 1 a), Michael Plummer (2 g) and Enrique Ramos (2 g, 1 a) were also multiple-goal scorers. Kyle Hensley made 18 saves.

Wilmington Friends 6, Polytech 5: Samuel Slater and Christopher McCalister tallied two goals apiece in the Panthers’ loss.

Connor Fuchs added Polytech’s the goal while Aidan Stephan made five saves. The Panthers out-shot the Quakers, 19-17.

Sussex Academy 11, Brandywine 6: The Seahawks jumped out to a 6-1 first-quarter lead before posting the win.

Grant Thomas netted four goals and an assist for Sussex Academy (3-2) with Riley Custodio scoring three. Jackson Dinger (1 assist) and Ryan Burke both scored twice with Lex Johnson making eight saves.

Wicomico, Md. 13, Sussex Central 8: The Golden Knights dropped a non-conference decision at home.

First State Military 15, Red Lion Christian 2: The Bulldogs improved to 2-3 after their second straight win.

GIRLS, Newark Charter 10, Dover 9: The Senators out-scored the Patriots, 6-3, in the second half before falling short.

Kyleigh Dill (1 assist) and Riley McQuaide had three goals apiece for Dover (4-2), which got nine saves from Regan Torbert. Both teams took 29 shots.

Sussex Academy 19, Delaware Military 9: The Seahawks built an 11-2 halftime advantage before holding off the Seahawks.

Pacing Sussex Academy were Clara Elliott (4 goals), Annabella Gucks (4), Mackenzie Cummings (3), Molly Martiner (3) and Madison Burke (2). The Seahawks out-shot DMA, 32-20.

Sussex Tech 20, Newark 2: Fifteen different Ravens scored as Sussex Tech (4-3) won their second in a row.

Nataleigh Hunter (3 goals), Kayla Horn (2 goals, 2 assists), Jade Powell (2 g, 2 a) and Kiley Persolio (2 g) led Sussex Tech, who out-shot the Yellowjackets, 30-4.

Softball

Polytech 6, St. Georges 1: Kaite Burawski pitched a complete-game no-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the Panthers’ victory.

Burawski also had two of Polytech’s five hits. Leading 2-0, the Panthers broke the game open with four runs in the sixth.

Mt. Pleasant 6, Lake Forest 3: Trailing 5-0, the Spartans rallied for three runs in the sixth before falling short.

Alexis Stahre had two of Lake Forest’s five hits.

Caravel 3, Sussex Tech 2: In a game played Sunday, the Buccaneers broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Ravens, which got a double from Sierra Livingston, rallied for a run in the top of the seventh but were limited to two hits.

Baseball

Milford 8, Hodgson 5: The Buccaneers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning before picking up the iwn.

Winning pitcher Dylan Layton struck out six in six innings and also had two of Milford’s 12 hits. Mason Morris had three hits with three RBI while Aydin Zimmerman collected two hits and an RBI.

Delmarva Christian 20, Wilmington Christian 7: The Royals took control from the start with a 10-run first inning.

Andrew Workman, Michael Briggs, and Hunter DiFava all had multiple hits with winning pitcher Brandon Schlabach striking out six in three innings.

Boys’ volleyball

Indian River 3, Brandywine 0: The Indians improved to 4-0 after posting the 25-10, 25-18, 25-9 victory.

IR has yet to lose a set this season.

College lacrosse

Hens’ Miller honored: Delaware’s Clay Miller was named the CAA Rookie of the Week in men’s lacrosse.

The freshman midfielder helped the Blue Hens improve to 2-0 in the CAA, posting a career-best two goals and one assist in Delaware’s 15-13 road win at Drexel on Saturday.

Miller’s assist on Joe Eisele’s tally with 1:14 to play proved to be the game-winner for Delaware, which is off to its best start to a season since 2006 with a 9-2 mark.

College golf

UD men fifth in tourney: The Delaware men’s golf team sits in fifth place while freshman Matt Pulgini is tied for fifth following Monday’s opening round of the Villanova Spring Invitational.

The Blue Hens carded a 287 on Monday, ending the day in fifth place out of 20 squads. Drexel leads the field with a 272 score.

Pulgini fired a three under par 68 on the par 71, 6,733-yard course at White Manor Country Club. Pulgini birdied the eighth, 11th and 15th holes during his opening round, while adding 15 pars and not recording a bogey.
