Local roundup: Georgetown takes state title in Senior baseball

Georgetown edged Naamans, 6-5, on Wednesday night to capture the state title in Senior League baseball.

The host District III champions beat Naamans twice in the three-team tournament. Georgetown has now won seven straight games since losing its opener in the District III tourney.

Georgetown next travels to Bangor, Maine for the East Regional, which starts on July 18.

The Senior League World Series is played in Easley, S.C.

Junior League

District I

Felton-Harrington 13, Dover 9: Felton-Harrington posted the opening-round victory in the continuation of a contest that was stopped by rain on Tuesday night.

Felton-Harrington is slated to face Camden-Wyoming on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in the winners’ bracket.

Dover will take on Smyrna-Clayton on Thursday at 6 p.m.

MOT 15, Smyrna-Clayton 3: The Middletown-area all-stars picked up the win in their opening-round matchup.

MOT plays again on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Milford against either Camden-Wyoming or Felton-Harrington.

Softball

Junior League

MOT 14, Lower Sussex 3: Middletown-Odessa-Townsend captured the Junior League state title with the win on Tuesday night.

The championship earns MOT a beth in the Eastern Regionals, which starts on July 20 in Orange, Conn.

Winning pitcher Samantha Stokes had a team-high four hits while Emma Black added two hits, including a two-run double that gave MOT the lead. Eight players contributed to MOT’s total of 12 hits.

College basketball

Hen women get CAA pairings: With the Colonial Athletic Association expanding in basketball this winter, the league had to figure out how to handle conference scheduling.

The CAA announced on Wednesday that teams will play an 18-game conference schedule against all 12 league foes. Six of those will be repeat opponents,

Each team will play nine home games and nine road games.

Delaware’s women’s squad will take on Charleston, Monmouth, and UNCW for home only games. The Hens will face Hampton, Stony Brook, and William & Mary as their three road only matchups.

Delaware will play a home-and-away series with Drexel, Elon, Hofstra, North Carolina A&T, Northeastern, and Towson.

College bowling

Hornets earn academic honors: The Delaware State bowling team claimed the National Tenpin Coaches Association All-Academic Team Award while landing nine on the All-Academic list for the 2021-2022 season.

The Hornets recorded an overall team GPA of 3.83 to earn the award.

Programs must have a cumulative team GPA of a 3.2 or higher for the academic school year and be a current member of the NTCA. Fifty-two bowling programs achieved a cumulative team GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Individually Alyssa Breidegam, Emily Breidegam, Cierra Brown, Kelsey Cummings, Sydney Reardon, Delaney Reitnauer, Skylar Tenan, Stefanny Toala and Ellyana Williams were all recognized with NTCA All-Academic honors.

College tennis

UD men add three transfers: The Delaware men’s tennis program has added three more newcomers in transfers Daniel Krulig, Bernardo Teixeira, and William Wibmer, Director of Tennis Pablo Montana announced Wednesday.

The trio joins the already announced Tobey Lock and Euan Mackenzie as the Blue Hens incoming class.

Krulig joins the Blue Hens after a four-year career at the University of Denver. During his time as a Pioneer, he posted a 56-46 singles record and 31-32 doubles record.

The Miami, Fla. native was an All-Summit League selection in 2019 and an Academic All-League honoree in 2022.

Teixeira graduated from the University of Porto (Portugal) in 2022 and comes to UD to pursue his master’s degree in business administration. Prior to his time at Porto, he spent time at Escola Secundária Clara de Resende before graduating from Escola Secundária Fontes Pereira de Mel in 2019.

Wibmer heads to Newark after a four-year career at Sacred Heart University. He complied a 41-24 singles and 33-25 doubles record en route to eight different postseason honors in the NEC.

The Maldonado, Uraguay native was a two-time NEC All-Conference First Team selection in singles, one-time NEC All-Conference Second Team nod in singles, three-time NEC All-Conference Second Team in doubles, an All-Rookie Team award, and an All-Tournament honor.
