Delaware freshman Brittney Mendoza belted a grand slam as the Blue Hens’ softball team posted a 6-3 victory over UMBC on Sunday afternoon.

The Hens (2-1) took the lead in the top of the second inning when Hanna Garber delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single to drive home Karolina Flores. Delaware then took control by scoring five times in the top of the third.

Brooke Glanden ripped a one-out double to right center, while Flores and Halle Kisamore followed with walks to load the bases. Mendoza then drilled a pitch over the centerfield fence for her first career homer, extending the Hens’ advantage to 5-0.

Garber finished with two hits for the Hens, while starting pitcher Sarah Piening earned the win after allowing two runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings.
