Local roundup: Ewald’s OT goal lifts Rider soccer team past Charter 1-0

Chase Ewald’s overtime goal was the difference as Caesar Rodney High edged Wilmington Charter 1-0 in a boys’ soccer matchup on Saturday afternoon.

The game was played at Dover High as part of the DAAD Upstate/Downstate Challenge. The Riders avenged a 1-0 loss to Charter in last year’s season opener.

Caesar Rodney improved to 2-0 on the young season.

Indian River 2, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Md. 0: The Indians netted a pair of goals in the second half to win their first game of the season.

Jordan Illian scored the first goal in the 44th minute before Jared Cordoba added another 20 minutes later.

Wilmington Friends 4, Dover 2: Pedro Gonzalez and Marquice Hannah provided the Senator goals as they fell in the DAAD Upstate/Downstate Challenge.

Dickinson 3, Lake Forest 0: The Spartans dropped the nonconference matchup on Saturday.

Volleyball

Delmarva Christian 3, Cape Henlopen 0: The Royals won in straight sets 25-12, 25-22, 25-16.

Grace Fetterman, Mia Berger and Savannah Stewart each recorded seven kills for Delmarva Christian. Ashlyn Stonebraker had 19 assists.

Field hockey

Cape Henlopen 5, South River, Md. 0: Cameron Smith and Anna Stancofski each scored a pair of goals in the first game of the year for the Vikings.

Delmar 6, Notre Dame Prep, Md. 0: Logan Walls and Josie Hollamon netted two goals apiece in the Wildcat season opening victory.

College volleyball

Delaware 3, UMBC 1: Delaware wrapped up the Retriever Challenge with a 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-15 victory over host UMBC to extend its win streak to five matches.

The Blue Hens’ 5-1 record to open the 2019 campaign is their best start since 2010, when they won the Colonial Athletic Association championship. The Retrievers fell to 2-4 on the season.

Senior outside hitter Maria Bellinger led all attackers with a season-high 29 kills in addition to five digs and a pair of blocks. The reigning CAA Offensive Player of the Week was incredibly efficient, hitting .393 for the match.

Freshman setter Ezgi Basaranlar had the most productive match of her young career, dishing 54 assists while adding three aces at the service line. Freshman Lani Mason, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, joined Bellinger in double digits with 16 kills on 30 swings to go with eight digs. Senior libero Andie Hanus led the match with 17 digs.

Bellinger and Basaranlar were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts in the Blue Hens’ three wins across the weekend.

Women’s soccer

Wesley 5, Mary Baldwin 1: Emily Caldarelli scored three goals, including one 57 seconds into the match, to lead the Wolverines to a nonconference victory.

Mackenzie Forsythe and Kaitlyn Roazzi each added one goal for Wesley.

College field hockey

Wesley 7, Ferrum 0: Kaila Hindt (Smyrna High) scored twice and added a pair of assists to lead the Wolverines.

Madison Cook also netted two goals for Wesley. Leah Jones, Madison Terzaghi and Jessica Behornar rounded out the scoring.
