Delaware State cut a 15-point second half deficit to four in less than two minutes, but ran out of steam in a 74-66 MEAC loss to Norfolk State in men’s basketball at the Scope Arena on Wednesday evening.
The top-seeded Spartans led only 31-30 at halftime, and by just two with 12 minutes left, but appeared to be in control after opening up a 58-43 lead. The Hornets, though, answered with a furious 11-0 run to claw back into the game.
Dominik Fragala nailed a three-pointer to beat the shot clock, pulling DelState to within 59-55 at the 4:46 mark of the second half. However, Norfolk State outscored the Hornets 8-1 over the next two minutes, and stretched its lead to 67-56 with 2:51 remaining.
Delaware State (2-25) made a final push, and cut the Spartans lead to 71-66 after a three-pointer by Myles Carter with 33 seconds to play, but Norfolk State hit three of four free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win.
Carter finished with a game-high 27 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals. An All-MEAC first-team selection, Carter ends his Delaware State career with 1,092 points.
John Stansbury added 12 points, while Fragala came off the bench to contribute 11.
Hens’ Dickey named CAA MVP: Delaware women’s basketball senior Jasmine Dickey was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year for the second-straight season.
Blue Hen senior forward Ty Battle joined Dickey as a first-team selection along with being named to the All-Defensive Team. Lizzie O’Leary took home the
Dean Ehlers Leadership Award.
Dickey is Delaware’s first back-to-back CAA Player of the Year since Elena Delle Donne in 2012-13. She currently ranks third in Division I with 25.0 points per game.
Heading into this weekend’s conference tournament, she is also averaging 9.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.9 steals and has scored in double figures in 26 of her 27 appearances. Dickey has posted one 50-plus, one-40 plus and five 30-plus point game performances.
Battle averaged a double-double for the second-consecutive season with career bests of 13.5 points and 11.4 rebounds.
WOMEN, Howard 87, Delaware State 51: The Hornets ended their season with the loss to the top-seeded Bison in the first round of the MEAC Tournament.
Delaware State, which finished the season 0-24, got 18 points and 11 rebounds from senior Janasia Law. Unique Miller chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds while Breazia Robinson added nine points.
College equestrian
DSU’s Brown honored: Delaware State freshman Olivia Brown was named the ECAC Flat Rider of the Week.
She earned Most Outstanding Performer awards in Fences and the Flat vs. Lynchburg. She has four MOP awards in fences this year, and was ECAC Fences Rider of the Week last November.
College lacrosse
WOMEN, Army 19, Delaware 9: The Blue Hens (1-5) got two goals and an assist from Riley Gillin in the loss.
Basketball
Caravel, Sanford to play for state title: Top-seeded Caravel will face No. 2 Sanford in the DIAA girls’ basketball state finals after both rolled to semifinal wins at the Carpenter Center on Wednesday night.
The title game is slated to be played on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Carpenter Center. It will be the ninth time in the last 10 years that two private schools will play in the state championship game.
Caravel downed Tatnall 54-36 in Wednesday’s first semifinal behind 18 points and 12 rebounds from Taylor Wilkins and 15 points from India Johnston. Caravel led only 11-10 before out-scoring Tatnall, 19-6, in the second quarter.
Emma Kirby had 10 points to pace the Hornets.
Sanford pulled away to a 43-26 victory over Ursuline after using a 17-6 second-quarter run to break open a 4-4 contest. Dallas Pierce (14) and Zy Kilgoe (13) led the Warriors.
