Three individuals and two relays teams from the Henlopen Conference finished in the top three at the DIAA swimming state championships on Saturday.
Caesar Rodney High’s Ryan Woodzell and Sussex Central’s Brayden Wright both earned a second and third-place finish in the boys’ meet, which was held at the University of Delaware.
A junior, Woodzell took second in the 500-Yard Freestyle (4:45.51) and third in the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:44.70). Wright, also a junior, finished second in the 100-Yard Butterfly (50.05) and third in the 100-Yard Backstroke (52.72).
The Cape Henlopen 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team also made it on to the podium with a third-place finish (1:31.39). The team included Kevin Lewandowski, Andrew Criswell, Holden Tighe and Josh Reinhold.
Cape was the top-finishing downstate team, placing ninth with 105 points.
In the girls’ meet, Sussex Academy’s Gracie Maughan came home with a pair of medals. The sophomore took second in the 100-Yard Breaststroke (1:05.40) and swam a leg on the Seahawks’ third-place 200-Yard Medley Relay (1:51.61).
Maughan, who also took fifth in the 200-Yard IM (2:12.29), was joined in the relay by Victoria Evans, Sanne Elling and Elle McKay.
As a team Sussex Academy, placed 10th with 95 points.
Basketball
Blue-Gold rosters named: The rosters have been set for this year’s Blue-Gold All-Star Games in girls’ and boys’ basketball.
The game will be played on March 19 at Dover High. The girls’ game starts at noon with the boys’ contest to follow at about 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and are available through Ticket Spicket beginning March 3. This year’s event will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Delaware Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association scholarship fund.
The Henlopen Conference seniors on the Gold boys’ roster are: Caesar Rodney — Messiah Antwi, Craig Williams; Dover — Keyon Scott, Elijah Sessoms; Laurel — Javier White, Nifere Griffin; Milford — Jordan Norman; Seaford — Tyrese Fortune; Smyrna — Elisha Gregory, Majesti Carter, Devin DeMoe and Woodbridge — Kenny Newton, Emanuel McCrea-Mosley.
Smyrna’s Andrew Mears is the Gold coach.
The downstate seniors on the Gold roster are: Caaesar Rodney — Stacey Deputy, Teri Bell, Nubia Estwick; Cape Henlopen — Julia Saleur, Mehkia Applewhite, Morgan Mahoney; Delmarva Christian — Kaela Mitchell, Sierra Troyer; Indian River — Le’Anya Garrison; Lake Forest — Gabrielle Almonte, Karly Cain; Polytech — Samantha Rivera and Seaford — Keziah Purnell.
Delmarva Christian’s Jedidah Roach is the Gold coach.
College basketball
WOMEN, Delaware 67, William & Mary 45: The Blue Hens (14-2 CAA, 20-6 overall) maintained a double-digit lead over the final 32:34 in the CAA victory on Sunday.
Jasmine Dickey led all scorers with 22 points and 15 rebounds for her 14th double-double on the season. Ty Battle followed with 17 points and 10 rebounds to register her 18th double-double.
College baseball
Charleston Southern 7, Delaware State 6: The Buccaneers scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to break a 6-6 tie and complete the four-game sweep of the Hornets on Sunday.
Trey Paige paced DSU (0-4) with a pair of RBI and hits while Alan Alonso, who homered, also recorded two hits and a pair of runs scored. Alec Rodriguez (Dover) had an RBI double.
Florida Atlantic 5, Delaware 1: The Blue Hens (2-4) managed only one run in the eighth in the loss on Sunday.
Joseph Carpenter had an RBI double with Jake Dunion and Nick Vera both going 2-for-4 for Delaware.
College softball
Bradley 12, Delaware State 3: The Hornets held two leads in the game, but were hurt by another big inning in the Hornets’ final game of a weekend tournament at Auburn on Sunday.
Delaware State (0-8) led 1-0 and 2-1 before Bradley put nine runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Hornets had five hits in the game, including two by Dallas Speicher-Ramirez.
College lacrosse
Blue Hen men ranked: The Delaware men’s lacrosse team (4-1) was voted No. 15 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll, and No. 17 in both the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and Inside Lacrosse polls.
The Blue Hens fell to then-No. 7 Duke, 19-14, before beating Monmouth, 17-6. Delaware plays at No. 16 Michigan on Saturday at noon.
UD’s Robinson honored by CAA: Delaware men’s lacrosse attackman Mike Robinson earned his second Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week this season.
Robinson tallied nine points, including seven goals, to lead Delaware to a 1-1 record. He scored two goals on the road at No. 7 Duke. It’s the fourth consecutive week a Blue Hen has won the honor.
College bowling
Hornets sixth in event: The Delaware State University bowling team finished sixth in the Stallings Invitational hosted by North Carolina A&T over the weekend.
Delaware State, which went 6-3, was led by four top-20 finishes from Saralyne Nassberg, Alyssa Breidegam, Emily Breidegam and Kelsey Cummings.
Nassberg ranked 14th after knocking down 1,003 pins for a 200.60 average on the weekend. Her highest game came in game four when she bowled a 233.
