Madison Brengle advanced out of the first round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Thursday afternoon.
The Dover native downed Samantha Stosur of Australia in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Brengle was winless in three tries against Stosur entering Thursday’s match.
Brengle will face No. 11-ranked Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in the second round on Saturday at a time to be determined.
It was the third win in a WTA tournament of the year for Brengle who has won first-round matchups at the Australian Open and at the Hungarian Open this season.
Brengle has already tied her WTA match wins total from last year when she won one match at Wimbledon, and one each at tournaments in Quebec City and Nuremberg, Germany.
Women’s basketball
Delaware 70, Towson 57: A 27-point fourth quarter sparked Delaware to its third straight win as the Hens topped Towson.
The Blue Hens (16-13, 11-6 CAA), who trailed by one entering the fourth quarter, outscored the Tigers, 27-13, in the final stanza and are now tied with Towson (17-11, 11-6 CAA) for third in the Colonial Athletic Association with one game remaining in the regular season.
Makeda Nicholas led Delaware with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists while Alison Lewis tallied 14 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Jasmine Dickey, who missed the previous seven games with a broken hand, returned to the floor where she led Catonsville High School to the 2017 Maryland state title to collect eight points and three rebounds in 11 minutes of action.
UMES 69, Delaware State 58: The Hornets ended their regular season with a road defeat.
NaJai Pollard recorded a double-double to lead Delaware State. She netted a team-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Lanayjha Ashe was also in double-figures with 14 points.
The Hawks led 23-8 after the first quarter and never trailed.
Delaware State wrapped up the regular season at 5-11 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play and 7-20 overall.
Men’s basketball
UMES 70, Delaware State 64: The Hornets dropped their third-straight game to close the regular season.
Pinky Wiley paced Delaware State with 18 points. Kevin Larkin had 13 points while D’Marco Baccum added 10.
Larkin also recorded 12 rebounds for a double-double.
The Hornets fell to 2-14 in conference and 5-24 overall.
College softball
Wesley splits in South Carolina: Freshman pitcher Jessica Anderson set a new program record for strikeouts in a game with 11 in a complete-game four-hitter as Wesley open the day with the 6-1 win over the Rivier Raiders.
Anderson (Smyrna High) had a perfect game going through three innings and a no-hitter for 5.2 innings before Rivier scratched a run across in the seventh inning with two outs.
Ashley Royer paced the offense with a 3-for-3 day at the plate with two RBIs. Alexis Howerin drove in two runs and scored twice. Megan DiRubbio also came around to score twice from the leadoff spot.
Wesley then lost 3-2 to Guilford in the nightcap.
