Local roundup: Dover picks up North baseball win over Cape; Central's Layfield pitches softball no-hitter

Dover High scored the game’s first five runs before posting an 11-6 victory over Cape Henlopen in Henlopen North baseball on Tuesday afternoon.

The Senators (1-1 North, 2-1 overall) used a four-run fifth inning to stretch their advantage to 9-3 after the Vikings put up three in the fourth. The victory avenged a 13-run loss to Cape a year ago.

Dover’s Brandon Yoder had two singles, reached base five times and scored three runs. Hunter Chambers added two more of the Senators’ 11 hits with a double and two RBI.

Paris Mitchell tripled and drove in a pair of runs for Cape.

Sussex Tech 2, Smyrna 1: The Ravens scored a run in each of the first two innings and then made the lead stand up.

Winning pitcher Grant Allen allowed only one run and four hits while striking out seven in five innings. Reliever Zane Adams pitched two shutout innings to close out the Henlopen North win.

Landon Ruark (1 RBI) and Jaryn Sample had two hits apiece for Sussex Tech.

The Eagles’ Connor Strauss (1 RBI) and Connor Wilson each had a pair of hits.

Sussex Central 14, Milford 4: Winning pitcher Brenden Anderson struck out eight in four innings while adding three hits at the plate for the Golden Knights.

Colin Tucker and T.J. Morris both added two hits for Central, which trailed 1-0 before erupting for eight second-inning runs.

The Buccaneers’ Aiden Zimmerman went 3-for-3 while Mason Morris hit a three-run homerun.

Lake Forest 6, Sussex Academy 1: Leading 2-1, the Spartans used a four-run seventh to close out the South victory.

Quade Gannon had three hits, including a homer and triple, with three RBI for the Spartans with Adam Schiff also collecting three hits. J.D. Mudri pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts.

Pitcher Elisha Jones had eight strikeouts for the Seahawks.

Woodbridge 1, Indian River 0: Seth Smart and Will Hague combined on a three-hit shutout in the Blue Raiders’ South win.

Smart also doubled home the winning run in the fifth.

Chance Hocker struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings for IR while Roman Keith had a first-inning double.

Delmarva Christian 18, Holly Grove 1: Carter Breasure hit a three-run homer while Case Hitchens threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts to pace th Royals (1-1).

Girls’ soccer

Sussex Tech 5, Delmarva Christian 1: Lilly Short netted a goal in each half to pace the Ravens.

Brianna Pacheco-Quillen (1 assist), Remi Devine and Syaira Selby also scored for Sussex Tech.

Middletown 4, Smyrna 0: The Cavaliers netted three first-half goals before handing the Eagles (2-1) their first loss.

Middletown held advantages of 14-7 in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks. Smyrna’s Halle Geiger made 10 saves.

Indian River 6, Delmar 3: Sophia Scurci scored three straight goals to spark the Indians.

IR also got goals from Bella Scurci (1 assist), Carley Topper and Hannah Bird.

Alexandria Davidson made eight saves as the Indians held advantages of 23-13 in shots and 3-1 in corner kicks.

Maci Bradford scored twice for the Wildcats with Mackenzie Carroll adding the other goal. Lily Baker made 14 saves.

Milford 1, Lake Forest 0: Emily Thode’s goal in the ninth minute stood up in the Buccaneers’ South win.

Laurel 11, Freire Charter 1: The Bulldogs earned the non-conference victory.

Caravel 7, Polytech 0: Da Lonna Thomas made five saves for the Panthers in the loss.

Softball

Dover 11, Cape Henlopen 0: Alexis Dowdy pitched a five-inning two-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Senators opened their season with a North victory.

Jamie Chandler went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI to pace Dover’s 10-hit attack.

Alivia Heers and Jay’Lyn Slater had the Vikings’ hits.

Sussex Central 17, Milford 0: Madge Layfield pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in the Golden Knights’ Henlopen North win.

McKenna Boyle went 4-for-4 with four RBI, Katleyn Evick had a pair of doubles while Kaylee Verosko homered for Central.

Smyrna 17, Sussex Tech 6: The Eagles trailed 2-0 before putting up 10 runs in the second inning.

Hailey McCutchan (4 RBI, 2 runs), Meghan Shirey (2 RBI, 3 runs) and Ryann Durnall all hit homers for Smyrna.

Lake Forest 14, Sussex Academy 1: Freshman Carah Sumpter went 4-for-4 to spark the Spartans’ 14-hit attack.

Winning pitcher Alysa Hastings threw a five-inning four-hitter with three strikeouts and only one walk. She also had two hits for Lake Forest, which scored seven runs in the second inning.

Indian River 11, Woodbridge 1: The Indians got a one-hitter with eight strikeouts from winning pitcher Kinsley Hall.

Also leading IR were Samantha Derickson (3-for-4), Jillian Coulbourne (3 RBI) and Macy Blades (3 runs).

Kamryn Spence had a triple for the Blue Raiders’ lone hit.

Laurel 9, Seaford 4: The Bulldogs topped the Blue Jays in a Henlopen South matchup.

Delmarva Christian 13, Holly Grove 0: Lily Hutt and Taylor Lowe combined to toss a five-inning one-hitter for the Royals (3-0).

Hutt, Maggie Kwiatkowski and Lilli Showacre all homered for Delmarva Christian, which scored seven runs in the third.

Boys’ lacrosse

Milford 17, Newark Charter 9: The Buccaneers evened their record at 1-1 with the win.

Girls’ lacrosse

Lake Forest 16, Hodgson 1: Emma Massey netted eight goals and an assist for the Spartans (2-1).

College baseball

Delaware 8, St. Joseph’s 7: J.J. Freeman’s three-run homer in the top of the eighth completed a six-run rally for the Blue Hens (12-10) in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic.

Reliever Bryce Greenly (Milford) retired the Hawks in order in the eighth. St. Joe’s loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth but Greenly got a groundout to third to end the game.

Dom Velazquez (Dover), who pitched a hitless bottom of the seventh, picked up the win and improved to 3-1, while Greenly earned his first save of the season.

Villanova 15, Delaware State 5: Krew Bouldin hit a pair of homeruns and drove in four runs but it wasn’t enough in the Hornets’ Liberty Bell Classic loss.

The Wildcats led only 7-4 before scoring a total of eight runs in the seventh and eighth.

College golf

UD women win titles: Oihana Etxezarreta and the Delaware women’s golf team each successfully defended their titles this week at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate.

Etxezarreta earned medalist honors at the tournament for the second consecutive year by firing a one under par 72-70-73=215 on the par 72, 5,974-yard River Course at Kingsmill Resort. The Blue Hens also claimed the team title for the second year in a row, finishing first out of 14 squads with a 911 total.
