Local roundup: Dover knocks off Cape Henlopen in volleyball tourney

No. 20 Dover High won the final two sets to pull out a 3-2 upset of 13th-seeded Cape Henlopen in the opening round of the DIAA girls’ volleyball state tournament on Thursday evening.

The Senators (9-7) won by scores of 25-19, 16-25, 11-25, 25-21, 16-14 to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Vikings (10-6) on Oct. 6.

Dover, which has won six of its last seven matches, next plays at No. 4 Archmere on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Senators are in the state tourney for the fifth straight season.

Cape Henlopen was paced by Tatum Friend (9 kills), Kalista Lawson (7 kills, 11 digs), Kayleigh Mault (5 kills, 1 ace, 4 blocks) and Megan Smith (4 kills, 2 aces, 6 digs, 29 assists).

Indian River 3, Padua 1: The No. 15 Indians opened the DIAA state tournament with a 25-16, 18-25, 25-12, 25-18 win on Wednesday night.

The victory earns IR (11-6) a second-round matchup at No. 2 Delmarva Christian (13-2) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Henlopen South champion Indians lost to the Royals, 3-0, on Oct. 6.

Field hockey

Laurel 6, Christiana 0: The Bulldogs finished the season with a record 6-9 after posting their second-straight shutout win on Thursday.

Indian River 2, Sussex Academy 1: The Indians finished 6-9 after knocking off the Seahawks in a Henlopen South matchup.

Delmarva Christian 4, Seaford 1: The Royals finished the season at 4-11 after taking the victory.

Laurel 2, Caesar Rodney 0: The Bulldogs downed the Riders (10-5) in a contest played on Wednesday.

Woodbridge 10, Seaford 0: The Blue Raiders finished the regular season with a record of 10-4-1 after posting the Henlopen South win on Wednesday.

Delmarva Christian 5, Tome, Md. 0: The Royals picked up the win on Wednesday to improve to 3-11.

Boys’ soccer

Cape Henlopen 5, Polytech 1: Nicholas Panyko netted four goals as the Vikings finished the regular season with a record of 6-1 in the Henlopen North, 13-2 overall.

North champion Cape Henlopen will face South winner Indian River in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Milford.

Dru Schneider made six saves for the Vikings, who held advantages of 15-7 in shots and 3-1 in corner kicks.

Bowen Simmons scored for the Panthers with James Watterton making 10 saves.

Dover 10, Christiana 0: The Senators tallied seven first-half goals before finishing the regular season at 8-6-1.

Smyrna 6, Dickinson 0: The Eagles finished the season at 6-7-2 after earning the shutout victory.

Sussex Academy 2, Laurel 1: The Seahawks edged the Bulldogs in a Henlopen South contest.
