Dover High goes into today’s finals of the DIAA girls’ tennis tournament with the lead as it tries to capture the program’s second-straight state crown.

On Wednesday the Senators advanced four of their five entries into today’s state finals, which are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at St. Andrews School.

The Caesar Rodney boys are also in contention for the team crown but have only three entries remaining. The Riders are also in a three-way tie with Tower Hill and Wilmington Charter with 17 points going into today’s finals.

In the girls’ draw, the Senators are trying to stay ahead of second-place Tower Hill, which has three entries in the finals. Two points are awarded for a victory in a title match.

Advancing for Dover are Erika Synoski (first singles), Olivia Anyanwu (second singles), Evie Synder (third singles) and the first doubles team of Shing Lin-Terri Crawford.

CR’s girls have only one player in today’s finals — sophomore Erin Gross at second singles.

On the boys’ side, the Riders’ second-singles top-seeded Darin Jawahar picked up a key 6-3, 6-2 win over the Hillers’ No. 4 Gaurav Rastogi on Wednesday. Jawahar will take on Charter’s second-seeded Noah Reice in the finals.

Both of CR’s double teams advanced to the title matches. Ramon Majon-Troy Boehne (first doubles) and Caleb Anthony-Gilbert Hoffman (second doubles) will both face Tower Hill in today’s finals.

The Riders have won the boys’ team crown eight times since 2008. Henlopen Conference schools have won the last four girls’ team state championships.

College track & field

DSU’s Chisholm headed for NCAAs: Dover High grad Tayshaun Chisholm, a junior at Delaware State, was slated to go to Eugene, Oregon to compete in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships on Wednesday.

Chisholm was scheduled to take part in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles.

Chisholm finished in the top seven in all his events this season. He recorded 10 top-five finishes, including finishing in first place four times in the 110 hurdles.

Chisholm saved his best for last with a time of 13.96 seconds to take a bronze medal in the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. That finish qualified him for the NCAAs.

At the time of his last performance he ranked No. 35 in the nation. For the 110 hurdles, the NCAA takes the fastest 48 runners.
