Local roundup: Dover freshman Dowdy hurls 6-inning softball no-hitter vs. Seaford

Freshman Lex Dowdy threw a six-inning no-hitter as Dover High blanked Seaford, 10-0, in Henlopen Conference softball on Monday afternoon.

Dowdy struck out seven as the Senators posted their second-straight no-hitter.

At 8-2, Dover has already matched its highest win total for a season since at least 2009. Emma Crowe (3 hits, 3 RBI, 2 runs) and Alayna Gigliotti (2 hits, 2 RBI, 2 runs) paced the Senators’ 10-hit attack.

Pitcher Jada Evans went the distance for Seaford.

Sussex Academy 15, Design Thinking 3: Winning pitcher Miranda McIlvaine struck out nine in five innings and added a pair of hits at the plate for the Seahawks.

Caelynn Rees-Jorgensen and Paige Tidwell also had two hits as Sussex Academy finished with 10 in the contest.

Baseball

Dover 20, Seaford 6: The Senators broke open the Henlopen Conference game with 10 runs in the second.

Dover finished with 16 hits, incluidng four each from Mike Carrington and Nathan Turner. Dominic Velazquez, Andrew Carney, winning pitcher Hiram Davis and Turner all had multiple RBI.

Dylan Nibblet had two of the Blue Jays’ six hits.

Sussex Tech 18, Indian River 0: The Ravens were already leading 6-0 when they erupted for 12 runs in the fourth.

Winning pitcher Noah Covington struck out six and allowed only three hits in four scoreless innings. Grant Lamers homered for Sussex Tech.

Girls’ soccer

Sussex Academy 2, Newark 1: Delaney Smith’s goal in the 71st minute broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Seahawks (7-2) to the win.

Angeliki Rigakos scored in the first half while Emma Westbrook made seven saves. Sussex Academy out-shot the Yellowjackets, 11-8.

Conrad 4, Sussex Central 0: The Red Wolves netted a pair of goals in half to down the Golden Knights.

Nigeria Edwards made eight saves with Briana Edwards adding four for Central, which was out-shot, 16-3.

Lacrosse

BOYS, Cape Henlopen 18, Tower Hill 3: The Vikings (7-1) tallied nine goals in each half before picking up the win.

Ten players scored goals for Cape, which was led by Jack Dennis (4 goals), Gabriel Best (3 g, 1 a), Gregory Boyce (2 g, 2 a), Blake Gipko (2 g) and Robert Rickenbach (2 g, 1 a).

Lake Forest 19, Red Lion Christian 0: Kade Collins and Zyaire Elliott both netted five goals as the Spartans (5-3) won their third game in a row.

Dylan Auen and Brandon Tice both scored twice as nine different Lake Forest players had goals.

GIRLS, Cape Henlopen 14, Queen Anne’s, Md. 10: The Vikings (9-0) jumped out to a 10-4 halftime advantage before holding on for the win.

Sawyer Walker and Alia Marshall scored three goals each for Cape while Anna Stancofski and Jacqueline Cannon both had two. Laci Dixon made 13 saves as the Vikings held a 24-23 edge in shots.

Sussex Academy 18, St. Georges 3: The Seahawks tallied 10 second-half goals in the non-conference win.

Pacing Sussex Academy were Annabella Guckes (5 goals), Madison Burke (3 g), Clara Elliott (3 g, 1 a) and Bella Kwan (2 g, 5 a). Peyton Hagy and Grace Scott made three saves apiece.

Boys’ volleyball

Indian River 3, Delmarva Christian 0: The Indians stayed unbeaten at 7-0 after posting a 25-20, 25-12, 25-22 win.

Leading IR were Michael Barnes (14 kills, 3 blocks, 6 digs), Mitchell McGee (13 kills, 5 digs), Carson Barnes (5 kills, 2 aces, 12 digs) and Alexander Canseco Castro (2 kills, 3 digs, 36 assists).

College lacrosse

UD men ranked No. 20: The Delaware men’s lacrosse team is nationally ranked for the first time since 2012.

The Blue Hens (10-2) were ranked No. 20 in two of the three national polls on Monday.

Delaware is off to the program’s best start since 1999. With two critical weeks left in CAA conference play, Delaware is all alone atop the standings at 3-0 with games against the two other top teams, Towson (April 20) and UMass (April 27) on the horizon.

The Hens and Towson square off in a matchup of top-20 teams at Delaware Stadium on Saturday at noon.
