Dover downed Smyrna-Clayton, 11-1, on Thursday night to stay alive in the Junior League baseball District I tournament.
Dover is now 1-1 in the five-team, double-elimination tourney being played at Milford.
On Friday, Dover will play Felton-Harrington for a second time in the losers’ bracket at 8:30 p.m.
In Thursday's victory, pitcher Preston Byrd allowed just one hit in five innings. Jeremy Drago had a two-run triple for Dover while Trevor Groton had an RBI and scored a run.
Matt Mannering drove in Patrick Oliver with Smyrna-Clayton's lone run.
Camden-Wyoming 15, Felton-Harrington 4: Camden-Wyoming advanced to the winners' bracket finals with the win on Thursday.
CW faces MOT on Friday at 6 p.m. in Milford with the winner moving on to Sunday night's district finals.
Pacing Camden-Wyoming were Parker White (2 hits, 2 RBI), Dennis Wilson (2-run triple), Nate Guy (3 runs) and winning pitcher Cole Weaver.
Felton-Harrington got hits from Chase Johnson, Vance Benson and Brandon Whiteknight.
MOT 15, Smyrna-Clayton 3: The Middletown squad opened the tournament with a win on Wednesday night.
MOT plays again on Friday at 6 p.m. at Milford.
On Wednesday, Jayden Watras (2 hits, 4 RBI), Connor Robovistsky (3 RBI), Jackson Honeycutt (2 hits, 1 RBI), Xavier Phares (1 hit, 1 RBI), Jayden Cobar (3 runs) all paced MOT. Winning pitcher Thomas Finnegan, Watras and
Robovitsky combined for 11 strikeouts.
Smyrna-Clayton had hits from Chase Luszak, Matthew Mannering, Elikem Gawuah, and Evan Rosenwald. Rosenwald also pitched three innings, allowing only three earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.
8-10 tournament
MOT 5, Milford 2: Brant Abbott and Billy Wineley combined to pitch a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and allowed only five base runners in MOT’s District I tournament win on Thursday.
Daniel Rabovanic (2 RBI) and William Fitzgerald had two hits apiece with Kyle Bailey adding a triple for MOT, which plays Felton-Harrington on Friday at 6 p.m. at Smyrna-Clayton.
Smyrna-Clayton 13, Dover 1: Host Smyrna-Clayton won its first-round district tournament matchup on Thursday night.
On Friday, Smyrna-Clayton will take on Camden-Wyoming at 8:30 p.m.
Dover next plays on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the losers’ bracket.
Jameson Fuchs 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Smyrna-Clayton while Landon Netsch contributed two hits. Grayson Hudson, Evan Donahue, Noah Raffa, and Boe Pleasanton combined to throw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts.Michael Rooney had the lone hit for Dover.
College basketball
UD men announce CAA matchups: After announcing the women’s scheduling on Wednesday, the Colonial Athletic Association revealed the men’s matchups on Thursday.
With the expansion of the league to 12 teams this school year, teams will play an 18-game conference schedule against all 12 league foes that features six repeat opponents, three home-only opponents and three away-only opponents.
The league accommodated regional rivalries with input from the institutions throughout the process. Conference games will primarily be slated for the traditional Thursday/Saturday schedule with exceptions made for two three-game weeks.
The defending champion Delaware’s men’s squad will host UNCW, Stony Brook, and William & Mary as their home-only opponents, while traveling to Hampton, Monmouth, and North Carolina A&T for single games. The Blue Hens will play a home-and-away series with Charleston, Drexel, Elon, Hofstra, Northeastern, and Towson.
College golf
Two Hornets earn honors: Delaware State senior Ana Ferreyra Heit and rising junior Estelle Verny were named to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar team for the 2021-2022 academic year.
A total of 1,485 women’s collegiate golfers were recognized. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team is a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50.
