Local roundup: Dover boys blank Lake in soccer; Spartans down Polytech in hockey

Three different players scored goals as Dover High blanked Lake Forest, 3-0, in boys’ soccer on Tuesday afternoon.

Abram Leal, Dillan Polasko and Rolando Betancourt-Mejia all scored for the Senators (1-1), who led 1-0 at halftime.

Dover’s Alex Escalante-Diaz made five saves. The Senators held advantages of 12-5 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks.

Cole Murphy made 12 saves for the Spartans (1-1).

Milford 2, Seaford 1: Emmanuel Joseph’s overtime goal gave the Buccaneers their season-opening win.

Thompson Burke had a goal and assist for Milford, which out-shot the Blue Jays, 14-6.

Isaias Morales Vidaurri netted Seaford’s goals.

Caesar Rodney 4, Woodbridge 0: The Riders netted three second-half goals to put away the victory as they evened their record at 1-1.

Sussex Academy 1, Sussex Tech 0: Joseph Herrera Gomez’ goal in the 27th minute ended up giving the Seahawks the win.

Carter Norton made eight saves for Sussex Academy, which held advantages of 18-10 in shots and 8-2 in corner kicks.

Sussex Central 3, Delmar 2: Elian Lopez’ goal in the 79th minute lifetd the Golden Knights to the victory.

Jeyson Lopez and Gilmer Ortiz tallied first-half goals for Central.

Damian Kunie and Jared Garrido scored the Wildcats’ goals with Caleb Ritchey making 23 saves.

Indian River 5, Polytech 0: The Indians netted four first-half goals before downing the Panthers.

Delmarva Christian 6, Holly Grove Christian 0: The Royals opened their season with a shutout victory.

Field hockey

Lake Forest 6, Polytech 0: Roxanne Troutman scored twice with Parker Robbins adding a goal and four assists in the Spartans’ victory.

Lake Forest (2-0) scored five second-half goals to pull away. Madison Lawson made nine saves for the Spartans, who held a 13-4 edge in penalty corners.

Jourdyn Johnson stopped five shots for the Panthers (2-1).

Smyrna 2, Woodbridge 1: The Eagles used a fourth-quarter goal to break a 1-1 tie and complete their comeback from an early deficit.

Indian River 2, Dover 1: The Indians edged the Senators to improve to 1-1.

Delmar 8, Wilm. Friends 0: Jordyn Hollamon and Josie Holloman tallied three goals apiece in the Wildcats’ win at DE Turf.

Delmar (3-0) finished with advantages of 36-1 in shots and 21-1 in corners.

Milford 11, Seaford 0: Hannah Zimmerman netted three goals and an assist with Erin Dunlap, Emily Thode and Isabel Betts all scoring twice for the Buccaneers.

The Blue Jays’ Zurita Calderon-Perez made 11 saves.

Delmarva Christian 5, Holly Grove Christian 0: The Royals picked up a victory by shutout.

Dover 8, William Penn 1: The Senators tallied six first-half goals before evening their record at 1-1 with the win on Monday.

Ellisyn Arthur scored twice as seven different players scored goals for Dover, which out-shot the Colonials, 12-3. Savannah Strauss made a pair of saves.

Volleyball

Delmarva Christian 3, Caesar Rodney 1: The Royals won the final three sets to rally for the 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 27-225 victory.

Elaina Millaway (22 kills, 25 digs) and Ellie Millaway (20 kills, 3 aces, 12 digs) paced Delmarva Chrostian (1-1) with Tessa Kwiatkowski contirbuting 30 assists and Maggie Kwiatkowsk adding 22.

Dover 3, Indian River 0: The Senators opened the season with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-21 win over the Indians.

Sussex Tech 3, Woodbridge 0: The Ravens earned the victory by scores of 25-19, 27-25, 25-19.

Milford 3, Seaford 1: The Buccaneers won the first two setts before taking the match, 25-9, 25-14, 24-26, 25-13.

Holly Grove Christian 3, Delmar 0: The Wildcats dropped a home match on Tuesday.

College soccer

MEN, Delaware 2, George Washington 0: Sam Donnellan scored a goal in each half as the Blue Hens improved to 2-3-1.

Goalie Adam Vik made six saves to each the shutout.

WOMEN, Towson 7, Delaware State 0: Alexis Utain and Thalia Johnson recorded the only Hornet shots in the loss.

College golf

Carroll ties UD mark: Delaware junior Christina Carroll tied the three-round school record with a 207 to tie for fourth place at the Golfweek Fall Challenge in South Carolina.

Carroll, who fired a 71 and 67 during the first two rounds of the tournament, carded a 69 on Tuesday on the par-71, 6,026-yard Caledonia Golf & Fish Club course to finish tied for fourth among individuals with a six under par 71-67-69-207. She tied the 54-hole program record held by Thitaree Sakulbunpanich, who carded a 207 at the Edisto Island Invitational on Mar. 31-Apr. 1, 2019.

Special Olympics

Maple Dale hosting state event: Sixty Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners from across the state will tee off at the annual Special Olympics Delaware State Golf Tournament on Oct. 20 at Dover’s Maple Dale Country Club.

The tournament is played over nine holes in alternate-shot format with each Special Olympics athlete paired with a Unified partner (a peer without a disability). Athletes and Unified partners have trained together for the past several months by attending clinics and outings.

Unified partners are usually parents, siblings, relatives or friends of the athletes.

In addition to the tournament, more than 20 athletes are competing in a skills event featuring driving, chipping and putting contests.

The event begins with a brief Opening Ceremony at 10 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 10:30 for the alternate-shot tournament. The skills competition begins at 11 a.m. and takes place on the putting green and driving range. The awards ceremony for all golfers is at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Maple Dale Country Club donates the use of the golf course for the day, as it has for the past few years.
