Local roundup: Dill sparks Dover girls past Riders; CR tops Polytech in baseball

Kyleigh Dill netted six goals to pace Dover High to a 15-10 victory over Caesar Rodney in Henlopen Conference girls’ lacrosse on Wednesday evening.

Superia Clark added five goals, including the 100th of her career, while Ashtyn Torbert added four goals and three assists for the Senators. Shiana Hall-Carter made five saves as Dover out-shot CR, 22-11.

The Senators (3-0), who led 8-4 at halftime, have won five in a row over the Riders.

Riley Faircloth netted three goals for CR with Elle Roberts and Alexis Riley both scoring two. Melissa Dolt made four saves.

Cape Henlopen 20, Polytech 3: Molly Mendes tallied six goals and three assists to lead the Vikings.

Louise Rishko (4 goals, 2 assists) and Kelly Bragg (3 goals) also sparked Cape, which got goals from eight players.

Elizabeth Szell scored all three Polytech goals.

Smyrna 19, Milford 5: The Eagles improved to 3-0 with the win over the Buccaneers.

Sussex Academy 20, Lake Forest 0: Madison Leeper tallied four goals and an assist as the Seahawks (4-0) posted their second shutout of the season.

Macy Steinwedel (3 goals, 1 assist), Sanne Elling (2 goals) and Shelby Manlove (2 goals) also led Sussex Academy.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 21, Polytech 0: Hank D’Ambrogi collected six goals and a pair of assists in the Vikings’ Henlopen North victory.

Luke Burton (1 assist) and Thomas Gibbs netted three goals apiece as 11 players scored for Cape Henlopen (2-0). The Vikings out-shot the Panthers, 42-8.

Caesar Rodney 17, Dover 2: The Riders (1-2) registered their first victory of the season in the Henlopen North matchup.

Smyrna 17, Milford 4: The Eagles picked up their first victory to improve to 1-2.

Sussex Tech 20, Sussex Central 8: The Ravens evened their record at 1-1 with the Henlopen North victory.

Indian River 10, Delmar 9: The Indians edged the Wildcats in a Henlopen South matchup.

Garrett Powell tallied four goals for Delmar with Luke Hacket adding two. Chase Timmons made 22 saves.

Baseball

Caesar Rodney 10, Polytech 2: Andrew Rigby, Tate Wisniewski and Anthony Hatch combined to pitch a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts as the Riders (1-2) earned their first win of the season.

Rigby took the win after striking out eight in four 1/3 no-hit innings. CR led 2-0 before scoring six runs in the fifth.

Pitcher Conner Bartlett had a hit for the Panthers.

Laurel 14, Seaford 0: The Bulldogs opened the season with the shutout victory on Tuesday.

Softball

Caesar Rodney 10, Polytech 3: The Riders scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out their season-opening win.

Winning pitcher Peyton Shields threw a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts and added two hits at the plate. Sydney Hatch and Margaret McCarthy also had two hits each for CR.

Polytech pitcher Mara Everton doubled and struck out nine.

College softball

Monmouth 6, Delaware 4: The Hawks scored the game’s final five runs, including two in the seventh, to pull out the win.

Brittney Mendoza and Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) were each on base three times with two hits and a walk while scoring a run for the Blue Hens (17-11).

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Drexel 20, Delaware 6: Danika Swech scored three goals while goalkeeper Mercy McCarthy made 11 stops as the Blue Hens (3-8 overall) dropped their CAA opener.

College tennis

DSU’s Deang earns MEAC award: Delaware State tennis player Baluck Deang has been named the MEAC Rookie of the Week after posting a 4-0 record last week.

For the season, Deang is 6-3 in singles play, including 6-2 at No.5; and 6-2 in doubles matches.

College golf

UD player honored: Delaware sophomore Oihana Etxezarreta has been named Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Golfer of the Week.

Etxezarreta earned medalist honors at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate for the second consecutive year by firing a one under par 72-70-73=215 on the par 72, 5,974-yard course. She leads the Blue Hens with a 74.31 average round this season, and has been the team’s low finisher in five of the nine tournaments.
