Delaware State led by as many as five points in the first before Norfolk State eventually pulled away to a 78-65 win over the Hornets in MEAC men’s basketball on Monday night at Memorial Hall.
Delaware State dropped to 0-2 in the MEAC, 1-14 overall after losing its 13th game in a row. The Hornets have also dropped 14 straight games to the Spartans (2-0 MEAC, 12-5 overall), who they haven’t beaten since 2016.
DSU’s biggest advantage was 14-9 early in the contest. But defending MEAC champion Norfolk State rallied to go up 30-19 before halftime.
Jevin Muniz had 22 points with Martaz Robinson adding 21 to pace the Hornets.
WOMEN, Norfolk State 40, Delaware State 26: The Hornets were limited to just 11 field goals in the MEAC loss on Monday night.
The school record for fewest points in a game is believed to be 20, which was set against Syracuse in 2009.
The Spartans (2-0 MEAC, 14-3 overall) made only 16 field goals themselves in the victory.
Savannah Brooks tallied nine points and nine rebounds for Delaware State (0-2 MEAC, 2-11 overall). The Hornets shot 11-of-58 for the contest for 19 percent.
College football
Hens ranked in FCS polls: Following Sunday’s FCS national championship game, the Delaware football team earned spots in each of the final national rankings.
The Blue Hens were ranked No. 19 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 and tied for No. 24 in the AFCA Coaches Poll.
Delaware finished the 2022 season with an 8-5 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the CAA. The Blue Hens defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) in the first round, 56-17, before falling to No. 1 seed and eventual national champion South Dakota State, 42-6, in the second round.

CR’s Balde commits to DSU: Caesar Rodney offensive lineman Tahirou Balde has verbally committed to Delaware State.
The 6-foot-4, 270-pounder missed most of his senior season after injuring his knee in the Riders’ season opener at Hodgson. Balde said he had “a great talk” with Hornets’ assistant coach Jeff Braxton.
As a junior, Balde was an honorable mention All-Class 3A District II pick. He will be able to officially sign with DSU in February.
Wrestling
Indian River 45, McKean 33: The Indians ran off four straight pins in one stretch before improving to 4-0.
Samuel Lopez Mendiola (106), Steven Mayfield (132), Kyree Knight (138), Evan Forjan (144) and Angel Mora Salas (150) all won by fall for IR.
