Delmarva Christian rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 7-6 victory over Tower Hill in the first round of the DIAA baseball state tournament on Thursday afternoon.
Chase Hesson singled home the winning run in the seventh as the 10th-seeded Royals (16-2) earned a spot in Saturday’s second round. Delmarva Christian will play at No. 7 Wilmington Friends (16-2) at 1 p.m.
The No. 23 Hillers scored all six of their runs in the fourth to open up a 6-3 lead. The Royals got one run back in the sixth before following with three in the seventh.
Kenyon Motley, Mike Gilbert, Sander Margolin and John Gray all drove in runs.
Some games postponed: A handful of state tourney games were postponed or suspended because of the storms that went through the state on Wednesday.
Delmar is slated to finish its homer game with Conrad today at 2 p.m. with the contest slated to resume at 2 p.m.
Concord will also face A.I. duPont today at 2 p.m. with Red Lion taking on St. Georges at 4 p.m. The tourney is then expected to continue with the second round as scheduled on Saturday.
Among downstate teams, Dover will host St. Mark’s at 1 p.m. with Sussex Tech hosting the winner of the Concord-A.I. game at 1 p.m. Milford hosts Cape Henlopen at noon.
Sussex Tech’s Warrington wins Gatorade award: Sussex Tech’s Matt Warrington has been named the winner of the Gatorade Delaware Baseball Player of the Year award.
The 6-foot, 190-pound senior shortstop/pitcher compiled a 5-0 record on the mound with a 0.60 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 47 innings while issuing just 18 walks. He also batted .350 with 17 runs scored and 16 RBI through 17 games.
A parishioner at the Hickory Hill United Methodist Church, Warrington has volunteered locally on behalf of a food pantry and as a youth baseball coach.
“Matt Warrington is a game-changing pitcher,” said Woodbridge coach Kyle McGuire. “He is the kind of player that stands out on a baseball field from the time he starts his warm-ups to the end of the game. You can see that Matt is a difference-maker on the mound. He is a phenomenal student-athlete.”
Warrington has maintained an 88.4 average in the classroom. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at Wilmington University.
Softball
Title game set: No. 2 Smyrna (18-2) will face top-seeded Caravel (15-5) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pyle Center in Frankford.
The Eagles, who beat the Buccaneers 10-0 during the regular season, are trying to win their second straight title.
Henlopen Conference teams have won six of the last seven softball state championships with nine different downstate schools capturing the title in the tournament’s history.
Girls’ soccer
Indian River 2, Sanford 1: Anastasia Diakos’ goal in the 76th minute lifted the Indians to the win in the DIAA Division II state quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
Fourth-seeded IR trailed 1-0 before Avery Congleton tied the score in the 30th minute. Hannah Bird made five saves while Isabella Binko assisted on both goals. The Indians out-shot the fifth-seeded Warriors, 16-8.
IR will face top-seeded Caravel (16-0) in Tuesday’s semifinals at Dover at a time TBA.
