Baylie Phillips’ overtime goal gave Delmar High a 3-2 victory over Cape Henlopen in the Henlopen Conference field hockey championship game on Saturday afternoon.
For the Henlopen South champion Wildcats (16-0) the win was their second over the North champion Vikings (14-2) this season and ninth in a row in the rivalry. The two teams are the top seeds in the DIAA Division II and I state tournaments, respectively.
Delmar’s winning streak is now 111 games in a row.
Phillips scored twice with Emma Price adding the first goal for the Wildcats, who led 2-0 at halftime. Maci Bradford had two assists while Jordyn Hollamon adding one.
Summer Payne made five saves for Delmar, which finished with advantages of 15-8 in shots and 16-9 in corners.
Cape Henlopen tied the game on second-half goals from Hannah Maney and Alexi Nowakowski. Morgan Newcomb made 10 saves.
Football
Lake Forest 49, Delmar 7: The Spartans' win was their first over the Wildcats since 2015, snapping a six-game losing streak to their former Henlopen South rivals.
Lake Forest, which is now 4-2 in district, 7-2 overall, has won three of its last four games in a stretch where it went 0-4 last season. The Spartans play at McKean on Thursday at 6 p.m. in their regular-season finale.
Lake Forest has scored 49 points or more in four of their nine games this season.
Smyrna 52, Appoquinimink 12: The Eagles reeled off the game’s first 22 points and the last 30 to put away the Class 3A victory.
Quarterback Brian Wright threw five touchdown passes as Smyrna (8-1) won its seventh game in a row. The Eagles close the regular season by hosting Cape Henlopen on Friday night.
Middletown 42, Sussex Central 16: The Cavaliers led only 14-10 in the second quarter before pulling away to the Class 3A victory.
Kristopher Shields scored both touchdowns for the Golden Knights (7-2) while Ibrahim Leyva-Fojaco kicked a 40-yard field goal to give Central an early 3-0 lead.
Laurel 56, Indian River 14: The Bulldogs improved to 9-0 overall after winning the Class 2A district contest.
Laurel, which closes the regular season by hosting Delmar on Friday night, has won 12 games in a row since falling to the Wildcats in last year’s regular-season finale.
St. Georges 28, Cape Henlopen 19: The Hawks downed the Vikings in a Class 3A matchup.
Caravel 42, Milford 0: Caravel, which posted its fourth shutout of the season, remained unbeaten at 9-0 with the Class 2A win.
First State Military 28, Early College 14: The Bulldogs improved to 3-6 after picking up the Class 1A district victory.
Red Lion Christian 61, Woodbridge 16: The Lions pulled away to the Class 2A district victory.
Odessa 14, Seaford 7: The Ducks improved to 5-4 with the Class 2A district victory.
Girls’ volleyball
Caesar Rodney 3, Red Lion Christian 0: The seventh-seeded Riders downed the No. 10 Lions, 25-20, 25-15, 25-18, in the second round of the DIAA state tournament.
The victory puts CR (12-4) in the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2010. The Riders are slated to face No. 2 Delmarva Christian on Tuesday at St. Elizabeth at a time TBA.
The Royals beat CR, 3-1, on Sept. 13.
Leading the Riders on Friday were Melissa Eddy (8 kills, 5 aces, 8 digs), Sacha Mardesich (9 kills, 8 digs) and Claire Husemann (10 assists).
Smyrna 3, Delaware Military 0: The top-seeded Eagles downed the No. 16 Seahawks by scores of 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 in a second-round match on Saturday.
Smyrna (16-1) is slated to play again in Tuesday’s quarterfinals against No. 9 Tower Hill at St. Mark’s.
Leading Smyrna on Saturday were Skylar Berge (11 kills, 10 digs), Anna Richardson (9 kills, 3 aces, 3 blocks, 11 digs), Karalyn Osborne (4 kills, 29 assists), Mia Schultz (7 kills, 2 aces) and Carly Timblin (10 digs).
Delmarva Christian 3, Indian River 2: The No. 2 Royals earned the program’s first trip to the quarterfinals with the five-set win on Friday.
Delmarva Christian (14-2), which is scheduled to face No. 7 Caesar Rodney at St. Elizabeth on Tuesday, was paced by Elaina Millaway (19 kills, 17 digs), Ellie Millaway (18 kills, 10 digs), Tessa Kwiatkowski (22 assists), Rachel Fetterman (18 digs) and Maggie Kiwatkowski (4 kills, 20 assists).
College field hockey
Delaware 6, Northeastern 1: The No. 2 Blue Hens advanced to their 10th straight Colonial Athletic Association Tournament championship game with the win over the No. 3 Huskies.
Delaware (8-11) will face No. 4 Drexel in the CAA championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium. The Dragon defeated top-seeded Monmouth 3-1 in the other semifinals.
Julia Duffhuis earned her first career hat trick. Ashlyn Carr (Delmar) and Berber Bakermans each had three assists. It was a career-high for Carr.
Carr also scored her third goal of the season in the 39th minute off a penalty stroke. The Hens finished the third quarter with the sixth goal of the season from freshman Noelle Sabbagh (Cape Henlopen).
The Blue Hens have scored 16 goals in the second half over the last six CAA games.
College basketball
DSU men win exhibition: Newcomer O’Koye Parker came off the bench to lead four double-figure scorers for the Hornets with 13 points on five-for-five shooting from the field, including three three-point shots in a 77-39 exhibition win over Gwynedd-Mercy on Thursday.
Khyrie Staten tallied 12 points on 6-for-11 shooting, while Martaz Robinson and newcomer Brandon Stone added 10 points each.
College volleyball
Delaware 3, William & Mary 2: The Blue Hens played in their seventh five-set match this season and this time was on the winning end by capturing the CAA road victory (35-33, 24-26, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13).
Delaware (13-10, 9-6 CAA) won behind Lani Mason’s 30-kill performance and Ezgi Basaranlar’s career-best 65 assists. The win has moved the Blue Hens to fourth place in league standings.
