Local roundup: Delmar tops Cape Henlopen in baseball

Delmar High scored three runs in the first inning before going on to knock off Cape Henlopen, 5-1, in Henlopen Conference baseball on Thursday afternoon.

It was only the third loss of the season for the Vikings (10-3) while the Wildcats (7-3) are now 3-2 against Henlopen North teams.

Winning pitcher Andrew Callaway allowed just one run and seven hits in six innings with Julian Burdett collected three RBI and Jack Ford had two hits.

Timmy Hitchcock went 3-for-3 for Cape with Justin Marsh adding a double and scoring the Vikings’ run.

Polytech 13, Seaford 0: Chase Masten and Ocean Jonson combined to pitch a five-inning no-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts for the Panthers.

Polytech scored eight runs in the first inning as Kyle McVey (2 hits, 3 RBI, 2 runs), Johnson (double, 2 RBI, 1 run) and Dale Austin (2 hits, 1 RBI, 1 run).

Caesar Rodney 4, Hodgson 2: The Riders scored twice in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.

Winning pitcher Tate Wisniewski struck out eight in six innings while Andrew Rigby went 2-for-3 with a double.

Dover 13, Woodbridge 4: Brandon Yoder and Teyvion McCoy had three hits apiece as the Senators finished with 16 hits in the victory.

Reliever Connor McPhail struck out four in three-plus innings to earn the win.

Woodbridge pitcher Derek Cannon had two hits.

Salisbury Christian 10, Delmarva Christian 0: Salisbury Christian scored five first-inning runs before downing the Royals.

Softball

Caesar Rodney 7, Sussex Academy 2: Winning pitcher Peyton Shields homered for the Riders, who improved to 11-2.

Kaitlin Horton added a pair of doubles as CR finished with five extra-base hits among its 10 hits.

Emily Hutt tripled for the Seahawks.

Sussex Central 5, Delmar 1: The Golden Knights scored four runs and then made the lead stand up.

Madge Layfield pitched a three-hitter while Catherine Hassler had three of Central’s 11 hits. Takyla Davis, Mya Jones and Aryanna Briddell all added two hits.

Autumn Boothe homered for the Wildcats.

Cape Henlopen 2, Seaford 1: Jay’Lyn Slater drove in both Vikings’ runs in the sixth as Cape rallied for the win.

Marissa Frederick pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts to earn the win.

Seaford pitcher Jada Evans struck out nine and drove in the Blue Jays’ run in the first.

Sussex Tech 11, Indian River 8: The Ravens scored the game’s final six runs to pull out the victory.

Sussex Tech’s 18-hit attack was led by three hits apiece from Laniya Lewis (3 runs, homerun), Kylie Kruger (double), Amanda Coates and Victoria Lecates.

Megan Sterling and Jaya Shaub both added two hits and three RBI.

Brandi Mitchell had two doubles for the Indians while Logan Marvel went 3-for-3.

Laurel 10, Polytech 0: Mackenzie Whaley hit a pair of homers to power the Bulldogs to the win.

Kylee Hill pitched a five-inning one-hitter with Couri Smith going 3-for-4.

Girls’ soccer

Smyrna 3, Cape Henlopen 0: Freshman Desiree Zapata scored all three goals for the Eagles, including two in the second half.

Sofia Lerro made three saves to earn the shutout. Smyrna finished with edges of 15-3 in shots and 3-2 in corner kicks.

Julie Heffernan collected 12 saves for Cape.

Lake Forest 8, Woodbridge 0: Sierra Jester (1 assist) netted a goal in each half as seven players scored for the Spartans in the Henlopen South win.

Haydan Parker added a goal and two assists for Lake Forest, which out-shot the Raiders, 24-1.

Anjolie Suberro made 16 saves for Woodbridge.

Polytech 1, Dover 0: The Panthers (8-2) used a second-half goal off a free kick by McKinley Boyce to pick up the North win.

Sussex Tech 2, Milford 0: Angela Miltenberger and Ashlee Vasquez-Arreaga tallied first-half goals in the Ravens’ North victory.

Alexandra Johnson made four saves for Sussex Tech, which held advantages of 9-5 in shots and 8-3 in corner kicks.

Isabella Hanna made six saves for the Buccaneers.

Caesar Rodney 5, Sussex Central 0: Gabrielle Davis scored twice as the Riders netted all five goals in the first half.

Kate Benson, Allyson Durham and Jada McCullough also scored for CR, which held advantages of 33-2 in shots and 10-2 in corner kicks.

The Golden Knights got 28 saves from Johanna Chavez-Niz.

Indian River 7, Delmar 3: Anastasia Diakos (3 goals, 1 assist) and Isabella Binko (2 goals, 3 assists) paced the Indians to the South win.

Alexandria Davidson made six saves for IR, which out-shot the Wildcats, 36-11.

Maci Bradford scored twice and Kelly Davis made 18 saves for Delmar.

Sussex Academy 5, Laurel 0: The Seahawks scored three first-half goals en route to the South victory.

Girls’ lacrosse

Smyrna 14, Sussex Tech 9: Madison Fillo netted four goals to pace the Eagles to the Henlopen Conference win.

Jenna Davis (2 assists), Madison Graham and Khushi Patel all scored twice for Smyrna, which out-scored the Ravens, 7-3, in the second half. Brynn Rifino made 13 saves.

For Sussex Tech, Jade Powell and Nataleigh Hunter had three goals each while Alexandra Simmons made eight saves.

Boys’ volleyball

Indian River 3, Wilmington Charter 2: The match went back-and forth with the Indians winning scores of 25-20, 16-25, 25-19, 16-25 before taking the tiebreaker.

College

Men’s lacrosse

Marymount 26, Wesley 5: Derek Hallock (Dover) and Ryan Gilman both scored twice for the Wolverines with Joe Delgado (Caesar Rodney) adding the other goal. Dylan Sicca made 26 saves.
