Local roundup: Delmar rolls into Division II field hockey finals with 8-0 win

Maci Bradford tallied four goals and an assist as top-seeded Delmar High cruised into the DIAA Division II state championship game with an 8-0 win over N. 4 Sussex Academy at DE Turf on Wednesday evening.

The Wildcats (18-0) will take on third-seeded Newark Charter (14-3) in the state finals on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Dover High.

Delmar will be trying to capture the program’s sixth straight state championship.

Josie Hollamon (two assists), Ella Shockley (one assist), Baylie Phillips and Jordyn Hollamon also scored goals for the Wildcats, who finished with advantages of 15-3 in corners and 22-1 in shots.

Lilly McAroy made 16 saves for the Seahawks, who finish 13-4.

College volleyball

Four Hornets on All-MEAC: Delaware State volleyball coach Dr. Bruce Atkinson has been selected as the MEAC Coach of the Year.

Also, Delaware State middle blocker Alondra Maldonado has been selected to the All-MEAC first team, while fellow middle blocker Sydney Lewis and setter Malgorzata Andersohn are second-team honorees.

Atkinson has guided the Hornets to a record-setting year, highlighted by a share of the MEAC regular season title for the first time since 1987 and a team record 24 wins (24-3).

In addition, the Hornets were a perfect 13-0 at home 11-1 vs. non-conference teams, while also establishing new team highs for MEAC wins (12), longest win streak (16) and shutout wins (19).

He is the second Delaware State coach to win the MEAC award, joining Mary Lamb-Bowman in 1986 and ‘87.

Three Hens make All-CAA: Delaware junior outside hitter Lani Mason took home first-team accolades while setter Ezgi Basaranlar and opposite/outside hitter Lauryn Richardson both landed on the second team of the All-CAA team.

The Blue Hens will return to the court on Thursday to open the CAA Tournament at Towson.
