Local roundup: Delmar outduels Cape Henlopen again; Sussex Central rolls to football win

Jordyn Hollamon scored the game-winner in the second quarter as Delmar High edged Cape Henlopen, 2-1, in their annual field hockey showdown on Thursday afternoon.

For the Wildcats (10-0), the win was their eighth in a row over the Vikings (7-1) and was their 106th consecutive victory overall.

Delmar took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Maci Bradford with 14:35 left in the first quarter. It was the first goal allowed by Cape Henlopen this season.

The Vikings tied the contest at 1-1 less than two minutes later when Grace Wiggins scored. That was just the third goal that the Wildcats have allowed.

Delmar out-shot Cape Henlopen, 21-10, while the Vikings held a 10-8 edge in corners.

Wildcat goalie Summer Payne made 10 saves and Cape Henlopen goalie Morgan Newcomb stopped 15 shots.

Lake Forest 4, Milford 3: Maya Jester’s goal with 1:29 remaining completed the Spartans’ comeback from a 3-1 deficit.

Malory Wood added a pair of goals with Emma Massey scoring the other for Lake Forest, which got eight saves from Madison Lawson. The Spartans held advantages of 15-11 in shots and 17-5 in corners.

The Buccaneers got goals from Hannah Zimmerman, Carley Mackert and Madisyn Hitchens. Melissa Mesidor made 11 saves.

Sussex Central 1, Indian River 0: McKenna Boyle’s goal with just 1:22 left in regulation gave the Golden Knights the win.

Ella Justice made seven saves for Central. The Indians finished with advantages of 7-3 in shots and 8-7 in corners.

Caesar Rodney 14, Mt. Pleasant 0: Peyton Shields scored three goals as the Riders (5-2) won their fourth game in a row.

Angelina Hulse and Jamie Reed added two goals apiece as 10 different players scored for CR. The Riders took 29 shots and had 16 corners.

Woodbridge 2, Sussex Tech 0: The Blue Raiders improved to 5-2 with the shutout win.

Holly Grove Christian 6, Seaford 0: The Blue Jays were blanked in a non-conference game.

Football

Sussex Central 49, Milford 6: The Golden Knights (4-1) bounced back from last year’s shutout loss to Smyrna with the decisive victory.

Sussex Central next hosts Dover for homecoming on Oct. 14.

The Buccaneers (2-4) lost their fourth game in a row.

Laurel 42, Woodbridge 0: The Bulldogs (5-0) remained unbeaten after posting their third shutout of the season.

Laurel has scored at least 31 points in each of its first five contests. The DIAA Class 1A defending state champions have won eight games in a row.

The Blue Raiders fell to 1-4.

Girls’ volleyball

Delmarva Christian 3, Indian River 0: The Royals won a tough first set before registering a 28-26, 25-12, 25-9 victory.

Delmarva Christian (8-1) is 6-1 against Henlopen Conference teams this season.

Smyrna 3, Sussex Central 0: The Eagles earned the Henlopen North victory by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 25-13.

Leah Sheridan had six kills for the Golden Knights.

Cape Henlopen 3, Dover 2: The Vikings took the tightly-contested Henlopen North victory by scores of 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 17-15.

Tatum Friend had 21 kills for Cape Henlopen with Kalista Lawson adding 18 kills and three aces. Megan Smith (4 kills, 6 aces, 11 digs, 54 assists) and Harlee Graulich (2 aces, 18 digs) also paced the Vikings.

Queen Anne’s, Md. 3, Dover 1: The Senators dropped the non-conference matchup.

Woodbridge 3, Seaford 0: The Blue Raiders picked up a Henlopen South victory by scores of 25-15, 25-8, 25-15.

Holly Grove Christian 3, Laurel 0: Holly Grove downed the Bulldogs by scores of 25-20, 25-11, 25-9.

Boys’ soccer

Polytech 4, Red Lion Christian 0: The Panthers (1-6) tallied three second-half goals to sew up their first win of the season.

Bowen Simmons, Vasco Granitto (2 assists), Hayden Cote (1 assist) and Bradley Mummert all scored for Polytech, which out-shot the Lions, 12-1.

Milford 6, Odessa 0: The Buccaneers used four second-half goals to put away the win.

Lake Forest 8, Red Lion 0: The Spartans netted four goals in each half of the non-conference win.

Worcester Prep 2, Delmarva Christian 0: Worcester blanked the Royals in a matchup.

Cross country

Henlopen runners takes Tidewater titles: Cape Henlopen High’s Ryan Baker won the boys’ indivdual title as Henlopen Conference runners made a strong showing at the Tidewater Classic in Winter Park, Md. on Wednesday.

Caesar Rodney won the boys’ team championship with 53 points, to out-distance second-place Cape Henlopen, which had 67.

Henlopen runners took the top four spots in the boys’ race, which included a field 325 competitors. Baker (15:53.71) was followed by Indian River’s Chase Sims (16:22.43), Cape Henlopen’s Joey DeGregory (16:48.13) and CR’s Patrick Craig (16:50.96).

In the girls’ race, Indian River’s Brynn Crandell (18:38.80) took second place in a field of 247. Caesar Rodney (200) was second in the team standings with Sussex Academy (121), Milford (129), Cape Henlopen (159) and Polytech (186) taking the next four places. Frederick won the girls’ title with 53 points.

College golf

DSU player honored: Delaware State’s Ana Ferreyra-Heit has been named the Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Month for her performances during the month of September.

She posted top-10 finishes in all three tournaments in which she competed, while compiling an average score 73.5 per round. Her month was highlighted by a first-place finish at Delaware State’s Classic at the Creek with a three-day score of 219 (73 avg.).

She defeated three other competitors in a playoff to capture the singles title.

College soccer

WOMEN, Stony Brook 1, Delaware 0: The Seawolves scored in the 74th minute to down the Blue Hens.

Delaware’s Odaliana Gomez made four saves in the first half to finish with five total for the game.
