Local roundup: Delle Donne wins WNBA MVP

Washington Mystics forward and University of Delaware graduate Elena Delle Donne has been named 2019 WNBA MVP in a near-unanimous vote.

Delle Donne received 41 of 43 first-place votes after leading Washington to a league-best 26-8 record. She is the first player in WNBA history to win MVP honors with two different teams after doing so in 2015 with Chicago.

The Mystics went 26-5 with Delle Donne in the starting lineup and lead the Las Vegas Aces 1-0 in their semifinal series. Delle Donne averaged 19.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists and shot a league-high 97.4% from the free throw line.

Delle Done became the first player in WNBA history to shoot over 50% from the field, over 40% from 3-point territory and over 90% from the free throw line.

Boys’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 1, Polytech 0: Spencer Ott netted the game’s lone goal in the 78th minute to give the Riders the Henlopen Conference Northern Division victory.

Caesar Rodney out-shot the Panthers 14-5. The Riders improved to 4-2 overall and are 2-0 in the Henlopen North.

Cape Henlopen 1, Dover 0: Gary Hayes scored in the first minute of the game as the Vikings held on in Henlopen North action.

Milford 1, Sussex Central 0: Samuel Dominguez provided the only goal on a penalty kick in the 56th minute as the Buccaneers remained unbeaten at 5-0.

Sussex Tech 8, Smyrna 1: The Ravens scored seven times in the first half for the Henlopen North victory.

Brayden Booros and Patrick Short each netted a pair of goals for Sussex Tech.

Indian River 3, Woodbridge 0: Jordan Illian had a goal and an assists in the Indians’ Henlopen South win.

Alexander DiLuzio and Erick Aguilera also scored for Indian River.

Laurel 4, Seaford 1: The Bulldogs earned the win in the Henlopen South contest thanks to a three-goal first half.

Sussex Academy 3, Lake Forest 0: Marcos Espinoza scored once and assisted on another goal for the Seahawks’ third-straight win.

Ryan Burke and Adison Browne added a goal each in the second half.

Field hockey

Smyrna 5, Sussex Academy 2: The Eagles remain unbeaten behind Jessica Bergold’s game-high two goals and one assist.

Lexi Moore, Regan Nacrelli and Ryla Wilber also netted goals for the Eagles (4-0).

Sussex Central 3, Woodbridge 1: Tied 1-1 at the halftime break, the Golden Knights (2-1) used a pair of second half goals to pick up the victory.

Delmar 6, South River, Md. 0: The Wildcats rolled to 4-0 with its fourth straight shutout to begin the season.

Ella Shockley and Logan Walls registered a pair of goals each to lead the scoring.

Mya Kemp and Morgan Bradford added one goal each as the Wildcats picked up the win at DE Turf.

Indian River 2, Sussex Tech 1: The Indians improve to 5-0 on the year with a victory over the Ravens (1-3).

IR has allowed just five goals in five games this season.

Volleyball

Smyrna 3, Cape Henlopen 1: The Eagles moved to 4-2 on the year behind a four-set Henlopen North win over the Vikings.

After a 25-20 Smyrna win in the first set, Cape grabbed a slim 25-22 win in the second set before the Eagles completed the division win with sets of 25-15 and 25-14.

Caesar Rodney 3, Sussex Central 0: The Riders picked up its third win in the last four matches with a sweep over the Golden Knights.

CR picked up set wins of 28-26, 25-19, 25-18 to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Indian River 3, Delmar 0: Led by a match-high 20 assists from freshman Camryn Ehlers, the Indian (4-1) picked up its fourth consecutive 3-0 sweep.

Indian River used set wins of 25-10, 25-2, 25-8 to roll to the sweep of the Wildcats.

Dover 3, Polytech 0: The Senators pick up set wins of 25-13, 25-13, 25-9 to move to 5-0 this season.

All five of the Senators’ wins have been sweeps.

College volleyball

Wesley 3, Bowie State 1: Set scores were 25-17, 25-9, 23-25 and 25-11 in favor of the Wolverines.

Defensively, Wesley had 61 digs in four sets, Caelli Clifford leading with 17, Emily Waldridge following close behind with 13, and Lindsay Burg chipping in 9.

Emily Waldridge, Mary Getty and Regan Healey led the offense with 10 kills each. Micah Wright contributing nine and Mackenzie Bender with four.

The Wolverines hit .222 to the Bulldogs .080.

Lindsay Burg had 18 assists and Brooke Gurganus had 16 to help fuel the offense.
