Freshman Jordan Casey singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning to give Delaware State a 6-5 win over Hampton in a MEAC North softball game Sunday afternoon.

The contest was the longest game in Delaware State softball history.

The score was tied 3-3 after the regulation seven innings.

With game tied 5-5 in the 11th, by tiebreaker rules, DSU’s Kayleigh Berry was on second base to begin the inning. Berry moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dani Velez and scored when Jordan followed with a single up the middle.

In Hampton’s half of the inning, the Pirates had a runner on third with one out, but DSU reliever Tara Tursellino retired the next two batters to end the game.

Desiree Moreno was 4-for-5 with five RBI. She leads the Hornets (8-3 MEAC, 11-20 overall) in hits (28), RBI (22), and doubles (9).

Tursellino (2-8) threw 8.1 innings to earn the win. She allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out a career-high 13.

Delaware 6, Hofstra 4: The Blue Hens snapped an 18-game losing streak to Hofstra in Hempstead dating to 2004 with the CAA win.

Winning pitcher Jordan Cargile (13-9) allowed four runs on nine hits in a complete-game effort for Delaware (17-16 overall, 5-4 CAA).

Women’s lacrosse

Delaware 17, Hofstra 9: The Blue Hens held Hofstra to just one goal in the final 20 minutes en route to the win in its CAA opener.

Delaware (6-5 overall), which held an 8-6 halftime lead, outscored the Pride, 9-3, in the second half, including a 14-minute stretch of eight straight goals.

Senior Jamie Schwartz led all players with a career-best seven points on four goals and three assists. The attacker set a school record by registering a goal just 10 seconds into the contest.

Mercer 26, Delaware State 1: The Hornets scored their lone goal on a shot by Brionna Watkins with nine seconds left.

They were outshot 46-9 in the contest.

College baseball

DSU drops two to Norfolk: Delaware State’s bid to tie for the MEAC North lead was denied by Norfolk State, which posted a 3-2, 6-4 sweep of the Hornets.

In the opener, Norfolk State pitcher Devin Hemmerich (6-2) frustrated the Hornets for the second time this season. He threw eight innings, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out nine.

The Spartans scored single runs in the first, second and third innings off DSU starter Garrett Lawson (Dover), who struck out six in seven innings. Devin Beverly, Ciaran Devenney and Kevin Smith had two hits each.

In the nightcap, Delaware State scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, two crossing the plate on a double by Devenney, to pull to within 6-4. Jared Gillis (Smyrna) went 3-for-4, while Darnel Maisonet was 2-for-4.

Northeastern 3, Delaware 2: A fifth-inning home run by Cam Hanley broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Huskies to the CAA victory.

The Blue Hens (16-14, 4-5 CAA) received 3.2 shutout innings from reliever James Meeker, who lowered his ERA to 2.20 on the season.

Offensively, the Hens got a pair of hits from Brian Mayer and Doug Trimble, but produced a season-low five hits.

The Hens rallied from a 2-0 deficit and tied the game in the fifth, but Hanley’s home run in the bottom half of the inning proved to be the difference.

College football

Wesley wraps up spring practice: The Wesley College football team finished up spring practice with its annual spring game on Sunday.

The game featured special teams drills, a lineman challenge and a 7-on-7 scrimmage between the offense and the defense.

Sophomore safety/wide receiver Coray Williams and sophomore offensive lineman Terren Carter (Smyrna) were named Most Outstanding Spring Players.

Coach Mike Drass named four captains for the season: Linebacker Samer Manna, offensive lineman Blake Roberts, defensive end Isaiah Ingram and offensive lineman Matt Gono.

Boys’ lacrosse

Caesar Rodney 15, St. Mark’s 1: James Cava (3 assists) and Joshua Cosden netted four goals apiece to pace the Riders to the win on Saturday night at Wesley College.

Jacob Copio (2 goals, 5 assists), Jacob Pangle (2 goals, 1 assist) and Jared Wagenhoffer (2 goals) also led CR, which outshot the Sparatans, 40-7. The Riders led 13-0 at halftime.
