For most of the night, it looked like the Delaware men’s basketball team was going to pick cup a much-needed CAA victory.

But somebody forgot to tell Northeastern.

After trailing by as many as 16, the Huskies netted five points in the final 14 seconds to stun the Blue Hens, 59-58, at Matthews Arena on Monday evening.

A pullup jumper by Jahmyl Telfort with just five seconds left gave Northeastern (3-3 CAA, 7-10 overall) its 59-58 advantage — and its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest.

Delaware (2-4 CAA, 10-9 overall) called timeout to set up a last shot but then turned the ball over. The Huskies missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw situation after being fouled but Christian Ray’s halfcourt heave at the buzzer was off the mark.

Northeastern pulled within 58-57 when Joe Pridgen sank a three-pointer with 14 seconds on the clock. The basket came after an offensive rebound by the Huskies.

Northeastern intentionally fouled Ray, who missed the front of a one-and-one.
Delaware’s Jyáre Davis led all players with 17 points while Ebby Asamoah added 14 and L.J. Owens scored 10. The Hens, who were playing their fourth straight game without leading scorer Jameer Nelson, Jr., used only seven players in the contest.

The Huskies finished with a decisive 45-19 advantage in rebounds. They turned 20 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points.

The loss was the second in a row for the Hens, who host William & Mary on Thursday evening. They had won their last four meetings with Northeastern.

UD’s Sconiers honored by CAA: Delaware women’s basketball player Klarke Sconiers was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week.

In the Blue Hens’ 2-0 week, Sconiers averaged 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 1.5 steals and 1.0 assists per game while shooting 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the field.

On the season, the senior center is averaging a team-leading 12.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per contest.

College track & field

Hornet men second at meet: The Delaware State men’s indoor track & field team finished second out of 16 teams at the HBCU Showcase held at the Armory Track over the weekend.

The Hornets got first-place finishes from Elijah Brown (1:57.33) in the 800 meters, Peter Kamanu in the pole vault (4.60 meters; 15 feet, 1 inch) and the 800-meter relay team of Jalen Booth-Mitchell, Evan Knox, Jaden Shelton and Alonzo Sims Jr. (1:29.000.

The DelState women’s team placed sixth out of 16 teams with a total of 52 points in the event. The Hornets’ Annalise Bond won the pole vault in 3.21 meters (10 feet 6.25 inches).

Boys’ basketball

Lake Forest 57, North Caroline, Md. 54: Sophomore Darius Miller netted 20 points to pace the Spartans (6-3) to the non-conference win.

Calif Spencer and Jackson Starkey both added 10 points for Lake Forest, which took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter.
