Local roundup: CW faces second Junior title game; Georgetown in Mid-Atlantic finals

Camden-Wyoming rallied to send the game to extra innings before Brandywine posted a 7-5, eight-inning victory in the Junior League baseball state finals on Wednesday night.

The two squads will play again on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Milford to decide the championship. The winner advances to the East Regional in Freehold, N.J.

Camden-Wyoming trailed 5-1 in the seventh before scoring four runs to tie the contest at 5-5. But District II champion Brandywine answered with a pair of runs in the eighth to post the victory.

The loss was the first all-star setback for Camden-Wyoming, which won its first four post-season games.

MOT 5, Milton 4: The Middletown squad edged Milton in the first game of the three-team state tournament on Wednesday night.

MOT will be back at Newark National to face Naamans at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Milton plays again on Friday at 7 p.m. in the double-elimination tourney.

Georgetown 16, New Jersey 3: Georgetown took the drama out of the game quickly by scoring eight runs in the top of the first inning.

The victory puts the Delaware state champions up against Delmar, Md. (3-0) in the Mid-Atlantic finals on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Bristol, Conn. The winner earns a spot in the World Series, which is being played in Greenville, N.C.

Georgetown (4-1) had four hits and sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning as it took control from the start.

Six players contributed to Georgetown’s 11-hit attack, led by Adeline Lutz, who went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI. Also pacing the Sussex County squad were Kenni Blades (2-for-2, 3 runs, 1 RBI), Karly Kruger (2-for-3, 3 runs, 1 RBI) and Eamma Jackson (triple, 2 runs, 3 RBI).

Makayla Eikenberry and Blades combined to pitch a six-hitter with six strikeouts and only two walks.Georgetown closed out the victory with four runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth.

College baseball

Hens pick up academic award: The Delaware baseball team has earned the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2021-22 school year.

Teams from every level of college and high school baseball were honored with this year’s award, which highlights programs coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2021-22 academic year.

The Blue Hens posted a 3.040 team GPA for the year. Reece Bolton, Aidan Kane, Brett Lesher, Joey Loynd, Nate Rolka and Grant Santangelo were named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester. Rolka, Santangelo, Bryce Greenly, Wyatt Nelson, Aidan Riley and Dom Velazquez earned Dean’s List honors for the spring semester.

Twenty-six Blue Hens were named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll for the fall semester, while 19 were selected to the honor roll for the spring semester.

College lacrosse

DSU honored for academics: The Delaware State women’s lacrosse program was honored as an Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Honor Squad for the 2021-22 academic year.

To qualify for this honor, the women’s lacrosse team must have posted a 3.2 or higher team GPA for the academic year.

Additionally, seven Hornets were named to the 2022 IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll: Aniya Aiken, Molysha Brown, Emily Campanelli, Dorian Coehins, Nina Dillard, Gwenna Gentle and Taylor Steed.
