Local roundup: CR wins wild ballgame 23-15 over Tech, Cape stays unbeaten

In a wild back-and-forth Henlopen Conference baseball game, Caesar Rodney High used an eight-run sixth inning to post a 23-15 victory over Sussex Tech on Thursday afternoon.

At 5-0 in conference, 7-1 overall, the Riders have matched their win total for all last season.

CR opened up a 9-0 lead after scoring six runs in the top of the third only to have the Ravens answer with nine runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Riders came back with five runs in the fifth and eight in the sixth. The two teams combined for 38 runs, 29 hits and seven errors.

Jackson Rall and Sam Ervin both homered and drove in four runs for CR with Tommy Pomatto and Kyle Comegys adding two RBI apiece.

Grant Lamers, who hit two homers, and Brayden Graham both had three hits for Sussex Tech with Matthew Warrington adding a homerun.

Hodgson 16, Polytech 12: Trailing by two, the Silver Eagles erupted for seven seventh-inning runs to pull out the victory.

The contest featured 29 hits, including 13 for extra bases, and 28 runs.

Thomas Mitchell homered for the Panthers.

Cape Henlopen 13, Sussex Central 1: David Erickson threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts in five innings as the Vikings stayed unbeaten.

Zack Gelof (3-for-3) and Luke Johnson (2-for-2) both homered and had three RBI for Cape, which scored seven runss in the third. Mason Fluharty added two hits to Cape’s total of 12.

Hunter Marvel had a hit and scored the Golden Knights’ lone run.

Milford 12, Tower Hill 12: Caden Oplinger’s two-run double tied the game for the Buccaneers in the bottom of the seventh before the contest was suspended by darkness.

Milford, which had 14 hits, led 9-0 after the third.

Woodbridge 15, First State Military 1: The Raiders broke the game open with nine runs in the third.

Winning pitcher Tyler DeFord (2-for-2, 3 RBI) and Gabe Wescott (2-for-3, 2 RBI) led Woodbridge’s 10-hit attack.

Chris Connelly hit a pair of triples for First State Military.

St. Andrews 4, Lake Forest 3: The Spartans scored twice in the bottom of the seventh before falling short in the nonconference contest.

Sussex Academy 18, Del. Public Safety & Security 2: The Seahawks scored nine runs in the third inning of the five-run victory.

Glasgow 20, St. Thomas More 0: Three pitchers combined to throw a five-inning no-hitter for the Dragons.

Softball

Lake Forest 12, Polytech 0: Katie Stahre pitched a two-hitter and added a pair of hits at the plate to lead the Spartans.

Brooke Glanden also had two hits for Lake Forest, which led 9-0 after the third inning.

Destiny Whaley and Hailey Wich had the Panthers’ hits.

Sussex Tech 9, Caesar Rodney 5: Colleen Cosbsy homered and drove in four runs to pace the Ravens.

Also leading Sussex Tech were Jakayla Sample (2 doubles, 2 RBI), Kylie Kruger (2 hits, 3 runs) and Kayla Booros (2 hits). The Ravens took the lead for good with four runs in the first.

Rachel McCleary hit a homer and had three RBI for the Riders.

Sussex Central 5, Cape Henlopen 4: The Golden Knights scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take the conference win.

Haley Rauch homered for the Vikings.

Caravel 12, Indian River 2: The Buccaneers led only 3-2 before scoring five runs in the second.

Grace Snyder had a double for the Indians.

Concord 11, Milford 6: The Raiders erupted for seven runs in the top of the first en route to the win.

Morgan Petty had a pair of hits for the Buccaneers who also got two hits apiece from Courtney Kohel, Macey Myers and Kalaysia Reynolds.

Parkside, Md. 1, Delmar 0: Parkside scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh.

Tracy Pleasanton pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Wildcats.

First State Military 22, McKean 3: The Bulldogs rolled to the nonconference win.

Girls’ soccer

Smyrna 1, Cape Henlopen 0: Destiny Zapata’s overtime goal lifted the Eagles to the Henlopen North victory.

Cassidy Cook made 12 saves for Smyrna, which outshot Cape, 14-12.

Lake Forest 1, Woodbridge 0: Elle Wood’s goal in the 22nd minute gave the Spartans the Henlopen South victory.

Indian River 6, Delmar 0: Isabella Binko netted three goals in the Indians’ South victory.

Anatashia Diakos added two goals with Avery Congleton adding the other for Delmar, which led 4-0 at halftime.

College baseball

Wesley 11, St. Mary’s 8: William Foster’s two-run homer in the sixth snapped a 5-5 for the Wolverines in their CAC victory.

All nine Wesley batters reached base and eight registered a hit. Jordan Marucci went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in. Will Barton, Chris Seibert, Michael Piccirillo, Chris Bramble and Jarrett Wallace all collected two hits.
