Local roundup: CR teams sweep Henlopen tennis titles; Lake pitcher throws perfect game

Caesar Rodney High swept both the boys’ and girls’ team titles as the Henlopen Conference tennis tournament concluded Monday.

The Riders’ boys won all five brackets with the CR girls taking three of the five courts in the tourney, which was held at Sea Colony in Bethany Beach.

At boys’ first singles, CR’s top-seeded Darrin Jawahar won the title with a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Smyrna’s Stefan Savich. Also winning championships for the Riders were Anton Manjon (second singles), Caleb Anthony (third singles), Marc Clemente-Ayush Patel (first doubles) and Jake Moyer-Avery Bonner (second doubles).

CR finished with the maximum 30 points. Sussex Academy (12) took second while Indian River and Smyrna tied for third with 11 points.

At girls’ first singles, Smyrna freshman Ava Emrich took the crown with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over CR’s Erin Gross. The Riders’ other titles came from Evie Snyder (second singles), Carrie Lord-Maxine Banaag (first doubles) and Ally Lebendig-Yatra Patel (second doubles).

Dover’s Sheng-Rue Lin won the third-singles championship.

The Riders’ girls totaled 26 points, followed by Cape Henlopen and Dover with 16 points apiece.

Softball

Delmarva Christian 3, Delmar 2: Lilli Showacre pitched a three-hitter and the Royals scored twice in the fifth to overcome a 2-1 deficit.

Delmarva Christian (9-4) is now 6-1 against Henlopen Conference teams this year. Showacre had two of the Royals’ three hits.

Ashlyn Tapman threw a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts and no earned runs for the Wildcats. She also had a hit.

Smyrna 23, M.O.T. Charter 4: The Eagles scored eight runs in both the second and third innings to break open the contest.

Sussex Tech 10, Nandua, Va. 5: Hayley Lawson had a homer, double and four RBI for the Ravens, who scored six runs in the fourth to take control.

Milford 10, Sussex Academy 0: The Buccaneers picked up a shutout win over the Seahawks.

Padua 4, Polytech 3: The Panthers rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh before falling short.

Rachel Carey had an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the seventh for Polytech while Karis Minner went 3-for-3.

Caravel 8, Cape Henlopen 6: Ja’Lyn Slater (3-for-4, 1 RBI) and Abby Marsh (double, 2 RBI) led the Vikings, who scored twice in the top of the seventh.

Baseball

Cape Henlopen 5, Stephen Decatur, Md. 2: Paris Mitchell had a two-run single wth Josh Reinhold driving in another run in the eighth as the Vikings (13-2) stretched their winning streak to 12 games in a row.

The contest was suspended by rain Friday and resumed Monday tied at 2-2 after the sixth. Aaron Rhue pitched the final three innings to earn the victory.

Delmar 7, North Caroline, Md. 4: Starting pitcher Danny Holston struck out nine in 4.1 innings for the Wildcats.

Ryder Keidel had two hits for Delmar, which closed out the win with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Lake Forest 11, Red Lion Christian 0: Cole Miller pitched a five-inning perfect game, retiring all 15 batters he faced in the Spartans’ win.

William Noell hit a three-run home run for Lake Forest while Adam Schiff and Leighton Webb both adding two hits.

North Dorchester, Md. 1, Woodbridge 0: Seth Smart threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts while Sam Schroeder had two of the Blue Raiders’ three hits.

Girls’ soccer

Delmar 2, Smyrna 1: The Wildcats took a 1-0 halftime lead before topping the Eagles.

Sussex Central 2, William Penn 0: The Golden Knights tallied a goal in each half before blanking the Colonials.

St. Georges 7, Delmarva Christian 1: Ainsley Bell tallied a first-half goal for the Royals, who got 12 saves from Myra Browning.

Caravel 5, Dover 0: Iyana Dixon tallied 15 saves for the Senators in the loss.

St. Elizabeth 2, First State Military 0: Kathleen Ford made 11 saves for the Bulldogs in the loss.

Cape Henlopen 3, Red Lion Christian 1: Josephine Ingerski, Samantha Hunker and Giselle Garcia all scored for the Vikings in the win on Saturday.

Girls’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 16, Ocean City, N.J. 8: The Vikings outscored Ocean City, 11-3, in the second half to break away from a 5-5 halftime tie.

Elizabeth Rishko (5 goals, 2 assists), Kelly Bragg (4 goals), Maren Buckaloo (3 goals, 1 assist) and Molly Mendes (2 goals, 2 assists) all paced Cape Henlopen (13-1) while Anna Lopez made 12 saves. The Vikings out-shot Ocean City, 25-24.

Indian River 9, Odessa 7: Kylie Harris tallied five goals with Madison Geppi adding two in the Indians’ victory.

Caylee Schmidt made six saves for IR, which rallied from a 5-4 halftime deficit.

Caravel 20, Polytech 8: The Panthers fell behind 9-3 at halftime in the nonconference loss.

St. Mark’s 14, Sussex Tech 1: Madison Short scored the Ravens’ lone goal while Bethany Covey made four saves.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 23, Caravel 8: Hank D’Ambrogi (2 assists) netted five goals for the Vikings, who led 19-0 by intermission.

Mikey Frederick added three goals and three assists as 12 players scored for Cape.

Dover 8, Woodbridge 5: The Senators (9-5) ran their winning streak to seven in a row.

Indian River 12, Delmar 10: The Indians topped the Wildcats in a Henlopen South matchup.

St. Georges 16, Sussex Central 4: The Golden Knights dropped a nonconference decision to the Hawks.

College football

Lake’s Morris commits to DSU: Lake Forest High football standout Jalen Morris announced that he’ll be continuing his career at Delaware State.

Morris played several positions for the Spartans, including wide receiver and defensive back as well as winning state titles in track and field. The 6-foot, 175-pounder made first-team all-district this past fall as a senior.

College lacrosse

Hens to host NCAA tourney game: Delaware (11-5) will host Robert Morris (10-5) Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the play-in round of the NCAA Men’s Lacrose Tournament.

Of their 10 all-time NCAA tourney games, it will be the first one that the Blue Hens have hosted. The winner plays at No. 2 Georgetown (15-1) Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

DelTech players, coach honored: Four Delaware Tech men’s lacrosse players and coach Sean Tischler received NJCAA Region 19 All-Region honors.

Cape Henlopen High grad Jack Dennis was named Region 19 Player and Offensive Player of the Year while Tischler was named the regional Coach of the Year.

Also for DelTech, Conor Christie (Milford), Matt Kracyla (Middletown) and Brandon Tice (Lake Forest) were named all-region.

College baseball

DSU’s Alonso earns MEAC award: Delaware State senior third baseman Alan Alonso was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

In Sunday’s doubleheader sweep over Coppin State, Alonso was 4-for-8 with a double, triple and his fifth home run of the season. He scored five runs while driving in three.

College softball

Wilmington makes regional: The Wilmington University softball team was selected to play in the NCAA Division II East Region No. 2 bracket.

The Wildcats (34-18), coached by former Caesar Rodney High coach Mike Shehorn, will be the No. 3 seed and face No. 6 Franklin Pierce (29-10) in the first round of the double-elimination tournament hosted by Georgian Court in Lakewood, New Jersey. The tourney begins Thursday at 11 a.m.
