A one-point decision from Josh Dyer with one individual match left clinched a 34-31 victory for No. 3 Caesar over sixth-seeded Sussex Central in the DIAA Division I dual-meet wrestling state quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
Dyer’s 2-1 victory in the 285-pound bout gave the Riders (8-5) a 34-25 advantage going into the final match.
The win sends CR to Saturday’s semifinals where it will take on second-seeded Salesianum (8-5) at Smyrna at 2 p.m. The Sals downed No. 7 St. Georges, 58-12, on Wednesday.
The Riders just lost to Sallies, 34-30, on Friday.
Wednesday’s quarterfinal was the rematch of a Henlopen North bout that CR won just 35-34 on Dec. 8. This one was close, too, with the contest tied 25-25 with three matches remaining.
But CR got a second-period pin from Shamar Nelson (220 pounds) followed by Dyer’s decision to earn the victory. The Riders got pins from Dylan Bennett (126) and DeVaughn Baker (160).
The Golden Knights answered with pins from Gabe Cannon (182) and Josh Negron (195).
Smyrna 50, Milford 22: The fourth-seeded Eagles trailed by four before running off 32 straight points to take control in the Division I quarterfinals.
Smyrna will host top-seeded Cape Henlopen in the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Eagles lost to the Vikings, 34-30, on a last-match pin during the regular season.
Smyrna beat fifth-seeded Milford by just one point during the regular-season. In Wednesday’s rematch, however, the Eagles took nine individual wins to pull away.
Tyree Heath (138), Brandon West (160), Shaun Atkinson (170), Derek Davis (182) and Kael Howell (220) all won by fall.
For Milford, Jack Thode (132) and Jayden Morton (285) both had pins.
Cape Henlopen 47, William Penn 24: The top-seeded Vikings advanced to their semifinal matchup with Smyrna after beating the No. 8 Colonials for the second time in five days.
Joshua Wright (126), C.J. Fritchman (160), Carson Kammerer (182), Matthew Couchman (195) and Lucas Ruppert (285) all registered pins for Cape Henlopen.
Lake Forest 36, Red Lion Christian 30: The fourth-seeded Spartans built a 36-18 advantage with two matches left before posting the win in the Division II state quarterfinals.
Lake Forest will take on top-seeded Caravel on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the state semifinals at Smyrna.
Trailing 6-0, the Spartans won six straight matches to take control on Wednesday. DeMarcus Russ (132) and Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts (152) both had pins in that 30-0 run.
Laurel 60, Indian River 9: The No. 3 Bulldogs opened the match with a pair of first-period pins en route to the win.
Laurel will take on No. 2 Delaware Military in the Division II semifinals on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Smyrna.
Connor Smith (113), Stanley Pete (120), Kyler Weaver (132), Hayden Hastings (160), Jett Furbush (170), Travis Rife (182), James Johnson (195), Brayden Hearn (220) and Brennan Harrington (106) all had pins for the Henlopen South champion Bulldogs.
Delaware Military 65, Delmar 9: Bryce Johnson (182) picked up a second-period pin for the No. 7 Wildcats in the Division II quarterfinals.
Chichester, Pa. 58, Sussex Academy 18: Douglas Horton (152) had a secnd-period pn for the Seahawks in the final bout of the match.
Boys’ basketball
Delmarva Christian 80, Salisbury School 58: The Royals out-scored Salisbury by 11 in the second quarter to take a 42-29 lead into intermission.
Seaford 65, Sussex Academy 29: The Blue Jays opened up a 26-3 first-quarter lead in the Henlopen South win on Tuesday.
Tyrese Fortune netted 14 points for Seaford, which had nine players score in the contest.
Michaelson Bernard had 11 points for the Seahawks.
Early College 64, Indian River 48: The Hornets picked up a Henlopen South win over the Indians.
Girls’ basketball
Delmarva Christian HS 68, Salisbury 15: Sierra Troyer tallied 22 points with Ainsley Bell (14) and Evelyn Jensen (11) also scoring in double figures for the Royals.
Indian River 46, Early College 22: The Indians finished off the Henlopen South victory on a 19-2 run in the fourth quarter.
College basketball
WOMEN, Delaware 81, Towson 78: Ty Battle scored off an offensive rebound with just 16 seconds left to put the Blue Hens ahead to stay in the hard-fought CAA win.
Battle’s basket gave Delaware a 77-76 lead. The Blue Hens (10-1 CAA, 16-5 overall) then sank four foul shots in the final 12 seconds to seal the victory.
Jasmine Dickey netted 29 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for Delaware with Battle (14 points, 13 rebounds) also finishing with a double-double. Tyi Skinner added 16 points.
Former Caesar Rodney High player Kylie Kornegay-Lucas registered a triple double with 11 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for Towson. She transferred to Towson after playing at Virgina.
UMES 79, Delaware State 46: The Hawks led by only seven at halftime before out-scoring the Hornets, 44-18, in the second half.
Delaware State (0-6 MEAC, 0-15 overall) was paced by Alexis Moragne (19 points) and Breazie Robinson (10). The two programs were playing for the first time since Feb. 29, 2020.
UD’s Dickey on another watch list: Delaware women’s basketball player Jasmine Dickey was one of the 10 small forwards named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association watch list for the Cheryl Miller Award.
The award, in its fifth year, recognizes the top small forwards in women’s NCAA Division I basketball. Dickey was recently named to the Dawn Staley Award Late Season watch list along with being selected to the midseason watch list for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award.
Dickey led Division I in points per game for seven-straight weeks (Nov. 29-Jan. 10). Now ranked second with 25.4 ppg, she is also averaging 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.
