Local roundup: CR girls take soccer tourney opener; Cape boys post lacrosse win

Elle Davis tallied the last four goals of the contest as No. 2 Caesar Rodney High blanked No. 7 St. Georges, 6-0, in the DIAA Division I girls’ soccer state quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

The Riders (11-6) play again next Wednesday night in the semifinals against either third-seeded Padua or No. 6 Smyrna. Those two teams play their quarterfinal game on Thursday night.

CR also got goals from Olivia Hudson (3 assists) and Madelyn Reed (1 assist) as they opened up a 4-0 advantage by halftime. The Riders out-shot the Hawks, 18-2, and held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 21, Sussex Academy 2: The fifth-seeded Vikings built an 18-1 halftime lead before posting the DIAA state tournament first-round victory.

Mikey Frederick netted six goals for Cape Henlopen (13-3), which next plays at No. 4 Delaware Military in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Hank D’Ambrogi (2 assists) and Burke Healy (1 assist) both added three goals for the Vikings, who got goals from 10 players.

Ryan Morgan and Brenner Short scored goals for the Seahawks while Mason Trench and Jackson Hagy combined to make 12 saves.

Softball

Caravel 13, Laurel 3: The top-seeded Buccaneers downed the No. 17 Bulldogs in the DIAA state tournament semifinals on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs finish their season at 14-7 after losing to Caravel for the second time in their last five games.

Golf

DIAA tourney split into two divisions: Next week’s DIAA golf state championship tournament will have separate divisions for female and male players.

There will be no overall champion with the top-five finishers in each division receiving medallions. Female players have won the individual state title for five straight years.

The tourney is being played on Tuesday and Wednesday at Odessa National Golf Club in Townsend.

Henlopen Conference champion Sussex Academy tops a group of five downstate teams in the 11-team field. Along with the Seahawks, Caesar Rodney, Polytech, Cape Henlopen and Dover join a group that includes Archmere, Wilmington Charter, St. Mark’s, Salesianum, Tatnall and Tower Hill.
