Local roundup: CR boys pull away from Smyrna in fourth quarter

Caesar Rodney High tallied seven unanswered fourth-quarter goals to post a 15-8 victory over Smyrna in Henlopen North boys’ lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon.

The Riders led by two at halftime before the Eagles tied the contest at 8-8 after three quarters.

William Lee netted four goals for CR while Julius Timmons (2 assist), Brendan Wark (1 assist) and Parker Smith all had three. Patrick Craig had two goals and three assists for CR (4-0 North, 5-4 overall), which won its fourth game in a row.

Dylan Bennett made seven saves.

Smyrna (3-1 North, 3-3 overall), which had a three-game winning streak snapped, got two goals apiece from Sarkissian (1 assist), Chase McLaughlin and Garrett Hudson.

Woodbridge 16, Sussex Academy 5: The Blue Raiders picked up the Henlopen South victory.

Girls’ lacrosse

Dover 19, Sussex Tech 1: Kyleigh Dill tallied five goals with Superia Clark scoring four as the Senators improved to 7-1.

Jewels Goldman added three goals for Dover, which got goals from nine players. Shiana Hall-Carter finished with seven saves.

Tori Adams scored for the Raves while Bethany Covey made 11 saves.

Sussex Academy 22, Polytech 2: Macy Steinwedel netted four goals while Sanne Elling, Annabella Guckes, Addison Basile and Madison Leeper all had three for the Seahawks.

Elizabeth Szell scored twice for the Panthers.

Baseball

Cape Henlopen 11, Laurel 8: The Vikings jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings before picking up the victory.

Justin Marsh went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI for Cape, which was also led by Brenn Scott (3-for-5, 2 RBI) and Brian Fleming (2 RBI).

For the Bulldogs, Brady Lee had a pair of doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.

Indian River 12, Sussex Tech 0: The Indians broke the game open with an eight-run fourth.

Roman Keith, Ben Cordrey, Chase Ruley, and Jace Jarmon all collected multiple hits.

Roman Keith went 3-for-3 with a double, a homerun and five RBI. Frank Bunting threw five scoreless innings surrendering only two hits and striking out five.

Milford 9, Sussex Academy 8: Aydin Zimmerman drove in Nick Santiago with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Buccaneers.

Zimmerman, who had three hits, also earned the victory in relief. Milford tied the contest with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Patrick Donahue collected four hits with a pair of doubles for the Seahawks while pitcher Wyatt Skinner and Wesley McLaughlin both had three hits. Douglas Horton added three RBI.

St. Georges 9, Smyrna 8: In the resumption of a game that was suspended by darkness on Monday, the Hawks scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to earn the win.

Softball

Lake Forest 3, Polytech 0: The Spartans scored all three runs in the first inning before blanking the Panthers.

Carah Sumpter pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts to earn the shutout. She also had an RBI double.

Mara Everton allowed only three hits and struck out three for the Panthers.

Seaford 11, Kent Island, Md. 2: The Blue Jays used a six-run fourth to take control.

Winning pitcher Hannah Moore struck out six and went 3-for-4 with Lillie Larimore also adding multiple hits.

M.O.T. Charter 20, Early College 4: The Mustangs scored nine runs in the bottom of the first to take control.

Cape Henlopen 10, Padua 4: Ava Calciano was 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI to pace the Vikings.

Jay’Lyn Slater added a hit, a double, and four RBI for Cape, which scored the game’s first six runs. Abby Marsh pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and only one walk.

Girls’ soccer

Cape Henlopen 2, Dover 0: Giselle Garcia netted both Vikings’ goals in the first half.

Brianna Burrell made six saves to record the shutout as Cape finished with advantages of 15-6 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.

The Senators’ Michelle Cortes and Iyanna Dixon combined for 13 saves.

Conrad 8, First State Military 1: Lacy Wynne scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs in the loss.

Boys’ volleyball

Smyrna 3, Sussex Academy 1: The Eagles downed the Seahawks, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15 win in a matchup of downstate programs.

Emmanuel Charles-Aine had five kills and an ace for Sussex Academy with Zachary Yenovkian adding 14 assists.

Indian River 3, Cape Henlopen 0: The Indians handed the Vikings the loss by scores of 25-15, 25-21, 25-19.

Odin DeLazaro Potemski had nine kills for Cape Henlopen with Ethan Shuttleworth contributing 19 assists.

College baseball

DSU’s Paige added to list: Delaware State sophomore infielder Trey Paige has been named to the College Baseball Foundation’s Brooks Wallace Award Watch List.

The award honors the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented this summer by the College Baseball Foundation.

Paige, a two-time MEAC Player of the Week and the preseason pick for the league’s Player of the Year, currently stands as the league leader in batting average (.375), slugging percentage (.682) and home runs (6). He is in a tie for first in total bases (60) and doubles (9).

College bowling

Two Hornets honored: Delaware State sophomore Saralyne Nassberg and freshman Sydney Reardon have been named to the National Ten Pin Coaches Association Northeast All-Region Team.

Nassberg was named to the second team while Reardon picked up Honorable Mention honors.

Nassberg was also named to the All-MEAC first team. In 662 frames, she recorded an average of 20.29 per frame while also notching a strike 50.8 percent of the time.

Reardon, the MEAC Rookie of the Year, averaged 197.26 pins in traditional play. She recorded a frame average of 19.72 and hit at least nine pins on the first ball nearly 70 percent of the time in the 282 traditional frames she bowled.

College softball

Morgan State 6, Delaaware State 0: Morgan State’s Anaya Hunte retired all 21 hitters she faced, 16 by strikeout, for a perfect game in the Bears MEAC victory.

Just five Hornets put the ball in play against Hunte, who struck the first 10 Delaware State batters, and fanned the side in the first, second, third and sixth innings.
