Sussex Central High scored three runs in the top of the seventh and then held on for a 6-4 win over Caesar Rodney in their Henlopen North softball showdown on Thursday afternoon.
The Riders rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh before falling short.
Mya Jones (2-for-2), Catherine Hassler and McKenna Boyle all had seventh-inning RBI for Central (5-0 North, 11-2 overall). Madge Layfield threw a seven-hitter with five strikeouts.
Peyton Shields also pitched a seven-hitter with eight strikeouts for CR (3-1 North, 11-2 overall). Maggie McCarthy had a pair of hits for the Riders.
Lake Forest 2, Woodbridge 1: Pitcher Carah Sumpter drove in the winning run in the top of the seventh to lift the Spartans to the Henlopen South win.
Sumpter also threw a six-hitter with eight strikeouts for Lake Forest (9-4).
Parker Keeler and Kamryn Spence (1 RBI) both had two hits each for the Blue Raiders.
Delmar 12, Indian River 0: The Wildcats led only 2-0 before erupting for 10 runs in the fifth.
Camryn Wingate, Zoey Coco (2 RBI) and Jordyn Holloman (3 RBI) all had two hits for Delmar.
Jillian Collins had two hits for the Indians while Kinsley Hall allowed only two runs in four innings before leaving the game.
Laurel 14, Sussex Academy 2: Winning pitcher Kylee Hill struck out 10 and hit a home run and double to lead the Bulldogs.
The Seahawks’ Caelynn Rees-Jorgensen went 3-for-3.
Delmarva Christian 8, Dover 0; Winning pitcher Lilli Showacre, who went the first six innings, and Lily Hutt combined on a four-hit shutout for the Royals.
Girls’ soccer
Indian River 2, Sussex Academy 1: Freshman Sophia Scurci scored in overtime as the Indians rallied for the Henlopen South win.
Hanna Bird’s goal in the 64th minute tied the game for IR, which got 11 saves from Alexandria Davison. The Indians finished with advantages of 21-12 in shots and 10-3 in corner kicks.
Zoe Probert gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute while Emma Westbrook made 16 saves.
Lake Forest 13, Seaford 1: Junior Alexis Hutson (1 assist) scored back-to-back goals in the first half as 11 Spartans scored in their Henlopen South victory.
Selena Lewis also scored twice for Lake Forest, which led 8-1 at halftime.
Cailee Layton scored for the Blue Jays.
Dover 1, Sussex Tech 0: Saniyah Coles’ goal in the 12th minute stood up in the Senators’ Henlopen North win.
Dover’s Iyana Dixon made 12 saves as the Ravens finished with advantages of 13-8 in shots and 13-2 in corner kicks.
Ebony Wilson made seven saves for Sussex Tech.
Polytech 3, Sussex Central 0: Natalie Velazquez, Justis Dungee and Megan Popp (1 assist) all scored goals in the Panthers’ Henlopen North win.
Caesar Rodney 5, Cape Henlopen 0: Elle Davis tallied the last two goals to finish off the Riders’ North win.
Olivia Hudson added a goal and two assists for CR, which out-shot the Vikings, 13-1.
Cape’s Brianna Burrell made eight saves.
Delmar 5, Woodbridge 0: Maci Bradford (1 assist) and Baylie Phillips both scored twice in the Wildcats’ Henlopen South victory.
Jordyn Bunting also scored for Delmar, which tallied three second-half goals.
Blue Raiders’ goalie Anjolie Suberro made 16 saves.
St. Mark’s 9, Delmarva Christian 0: Ainsley Bell made 11 saves for the Royals in the loss.
Baseball
Sussex Central 8, Woodbridge 7: Reif Steen’s RBI double in the top of the eighth ended up giving the Golden Knights the win.
After Woodbridge scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a one-run lead, Central answered with a run in the top of the seventh to send the contest to extra innings.
Appoquinimink 11, Polytech 5: Evan Bouldin went 4-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Jaguars.
The Panthers got two hits each from Braden Moran and Alex Newman.
Girls’ lacrosse
Caesar Rodney 12, Padua 11: The Riders built a 9-6 halftime advantage before edging the Pandas.
Alexis Riley netted four goals for CR with Ella Price (2 assists), Elle Roberts (2 assists), Lauren Wark and Rylie Faircloth all adding two. Melissa Dolt made 13 saves for the Riders, which held a 22-21 advantage in shots.
Boys’ lacrosse
Worcester Prep, Md. 21, Indian River 14: Reece Stone (2 assists) and Maxwell Forrey netted six goals apiece for the Indians in their loss.
Lake Forest 10, Woodbridge 6: The Spartans improved to 2-6 with the Henlopen South win.
