Local roundup: Caravel hands CR girls first loss; Panthers post baseball win

Caravel’s Skylar Salvo scored in the 15th minute and the Buccaneers turned the goal into a 1-0 win over Caesar Rodney in girls’ soccer Saturday afternoon.

The loss was the first of the season for the Riders (4-1), who got seven saves from Gabrielle DiBartola and two from Kylee Elliott.

Caravel (5-0) finished with advantages of 10-4 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks in winning their third 1-0 game this season. The Bucs have yet to allow a goal this spring.

Indian River 9, Seaford 1: Madison Tipton tallied a pair of goals as eight different IR players scored in the Henlopen South win.

Cailee Layton scored for the Blue Jays.

Delcastle 2, Dover 0: The Cougars scored twice in the second half to blank the Senators.

Newark 3, Delmarva Christian 0: The Yelowjackets scored twice in the first half of their victory over the Royals.

Baseball

Polytech 9, Wilm. Charter 3: Braden Moran and Conner Watkins had two hits each for the Panthers, who led 5-0 after the second inning.

Pitcher Ocean Johnson earned the victory.

Indian River 9, Delmarva Christian 0: The Indians scored four runs in both the fourth and fifth to break open a scoreless content.

Chance Hocker struck out 10 and allowed only one hit in five scoreless innings. Frank Bunting added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Sussex Academy 12, Polytech 6: The Panthers scored six runs in the top of the sixth to grab a 6-4 lead but the Seahawks rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the inning to pull out the victory.

Wyatt Skinner (4 RBI) and Douglas Horton both had three hits for Sussex Academy with freshman pitcher Patrick Donahue registering his first win.
Conner Bartlett and Ryan Zimmerman had two hits apiece for the Panthers.

Archbishop Spalding, Md. 6, Cape Henlopen 3: The Vikings rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh before falling short.

Austin Rhue and Nick Cox both had two hits and scored a run for Cape.

A.I. DuPont 17, First State Military 3: Steven Bright had a double for the Bulldogs in the loss.

Indian River 8, Dover 3: The Indians led only 3-2 before finishing off the victory with a five-run sixth.

Ben Cordrey (3 RBI) had a two-run single while Colby Willey homered in the sixth. Winning pitcher Frank Burton struck out seven while allowing only two hits and one run in four innings.

Lake Forest 14, St. Andrew’s 1: Chase Killen went 3-for-3 with a pair of triples and three RBI to pace the Spartans.

William Noell and Tristan McCray had RBI apiece as 11 Lake Forest players accounted for its 13 total hits.

Milford 10, Laurel 7: Winning pitcher Shawn Saxon gave up only three hits in five innings while adding a pair of hits and two RBI for the Buccaneers.

Also for Milford, Evan Gregg had three hits while Aydin Zimmerman (homer, double), Nick Hurd and Ryan Mejia all had two hits and two RBI.

The Bulldogs’ Royce Scotton and Kaden Shockley both had two hits and two RBI.

Sussex Tech 18, Delmarva Christian 1: Jonathan Stokley had three of the Ravens’ 13 hits while Jaryn Sample had two hits, including a home run.

Carter Breasure homered for the Royals.

Softball

Caesar Rodney 2, William Penn 1: Winning pitcher Peyton Shields threw a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts as the two teams combined for just three hits.

Catcher Stacey Deputy had the only hit for CR, which scored both its runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless tie.

Dover 3, Queen Anne’s, Md. 0: Alexis Dowdy threw a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts to earn the shutout for the Senators (3-0).

Alayna Gigliotti (3-for-4) and Emma Crowe both hit solo homers while Jamie Chandler was 3-for-3.

Caravel 6, Delmarva Christian 0: The Bucs led only 2-0 before putting up four runs in the fourth.

Rachel Hall and Lydia Woods had the Royals’ only two hits.

First State Military 19, Glasgow 2: Delaney Smith pitched a five-inning three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks in the Bulldogs’ victory.

Conrad 5, Cape Henlopen 3: Freshman Alivia Heers had a home run and triple with Brianna Windish adding two hits for the Vikings in the loss.

Arcadia, Va. 8, Sussex Tech 7: Laniya Lewis hit a home run and a double and drove in five runs for the Ravens in the loss.

Smyrna 2, Delmar 1: Cimone Edge pitched a five-hitter for the Eagles, who rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh.

Meghan Shirey had three of Smyrna’s eight hits with Kalissa Andruzzi adding two.

Emily Smith went 2-for-3 with Ashlyn Tapman driving in the Wildcats’ lone run in the fourth.

Dover 5, Seaford 3: Alexis Dowdy pitched a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Senators (2-0).

Alayna Gigliotti had two hits, including a triple, for Dover, which scored all five of its runs in the first inning.

Sage Larimore and Aiyanna Bennett had two hits apiece for the Blue Jays.

Caesar Rodney 24, Sussex Academy 1: The Riders collected 26 hits, including 11 for extra bases, and had an 11-run third in the win.

Lyric Abdul-Rasheed, who had four hits, and Ashlyn Schmidt both homered and doubled for CR. Stacey Deputy added a pair of triples.

Sussex Central 13, Indian River 2: Katelyn Evick went 4-for-5 with a homer and five RBI for the Golden Knights.

Winning pitcher Madge Layfield threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and four walks.

Macy Blades homered for the Indians.

Laurel 3, Polytech 2: The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.

Kylee Hill pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts and also had a double.

Rachel Carey had a couple hits for the Panthers.

Cape Henlopen 21, Early College 2: The Vikings used an eight-run first inning and seven-run fifth to pick up their first win of the season.

Wining pitcher Sophie Tighe struck out eight while Ava Calciano, Alivia Heers, Ava Simeone and Abigail Crouch all had hits for Cape.

Sydney Johnes had two hits for the Hornets with Karma Smith adding one.

Milford 15, Woodbridge 7: Winning pitcher Khyliah Reynolds struck out eight as the Buccaneers evened their record at 2-2.

Lauren Dickerson had a pair of doubles to pace Milford’s 16-hit attack.

Boys’ lacrosse

Salesianum 19, Caesar Rodney 4: Patrick Craig (2 assists), Steven Grossman, Ian Betts and William Li (1 assist) scored goals for the Riders in the loss.

Dylan Bennett made seven saves for CR, which trailed 18-2 at halftime.

Delaware Military 15, Dover 4: Tyir Trott netted two goals and an assist with Jamal Parker making 15 saves for the Senators in the loss.

Sussex Tech 16, Delcastle 2: The Ravens posted a nonconference victory.

Brandywine 6, First State Military 5: First State Military netted three four-quarter goals before falling short.

Delmar 9, Lake Forest 3: The Wildcats improved to 2-1 in the Henlopen South with the victory.

Indian River 12, Woodbridge 3: Maxwell Forrey had four goals and Reece Stone scored three for the Indians, who broke open a 1-0 game with six goals in the second quarter.

Sussex Academy 10, Milford 1: The Seahawks netted five first-quarter goals to take control.

Concord 4, Polytech 3: The Raiders tallied a pair of fourth-quarter goals to top the Panthers.

Girls’ lacrosse

Dover 13, Newark Charter 7: Superia Clark collected six goals and an assist for the Senators (4-0), who used a 9-4 second-half run to put away the win.

Kyleigh Dill (1 assist) added five goals with Ashtyn Torbert (2 assists) scoring the other three for Dover. Shiana Hall-Carter made eight saves.

Cape Henlopen 18, Parkside, Md. 3: Molly Mendes collected five goals and two assists as the Vikings improved to 5-0.

Elizabeth Rishko (4 goals, 3 assists) and Louise Rishko (3 goals) also led Cape Henlopen, which outscored Parkside, 10-0, in the second half.

Lake Forest 12, Brandywine 5: Emma Massey tallied nine goals and an assist for the Spartans, who got a combined 15 saves from Giulia Sweet and Jordan Hand.

Sussex Academy 21, Caesar Rodney 3: Shelby Manlove netted six goals with Addison Basile (2 assists) adding four as 10 Seahawks scored goals in the win.

The Riders’ Elise Hensley scored twice.

Polytech 18, Lake Forest 4: Molly Kenney netted seven goals and an assist to lead the Panthers.

Elizabeth Szell (2 assists), Madison Todd (3 assists) and Elise Diantonio all added three goals with Adelyn Mollohan making five saves.

Emma Massey scored three of the Spartans’ goals with Giulia Sweet and Jordan Hand combining for seven saves.

Cape Henlopen 20, Indian River 0: Maren Buckaloo netted three goals and three assists for the Vikings, who got goals from 11 players and tallied 15 first-half goals.

Caravel 17, Smyrna 4: Jenna Davis scored twice while Addison Beamer made seven saves for the Eagles.

Boys’ volleyball

Wilmington Charter 3, Indian River 1: The Indians won the first set before the Force won the match by scores of 18-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-18.

Delcastle 3, Smyrna 0: The Cougars downed the Eagles by scores of 25-20, 25-21, 25-9.

Cape Henlopen 3, St. Mark’s 0: The Vikings handed the Spartans a loss by scores of 25-14, 25-11, 25-7.
