Cape Henlopen High used a four-run fourth inning to take control before posting a 6-2 victory over St. Mark’s in a showdown between two of the state’s top baseball teams Tuesday afternoon.
The victory was the 13th in a row for the Vikings (14-2) while the Spartans fell to 11-3.
Cape’s four-run outburst gave it a 6-1 lead. Nick Cox, who pitched the first six innings, and Owen Daminger combined to throw a five-hitter.
Justin Marsh (2-for-2, double, 2 runs) and Paris Mitchell (2-for-3, 1 RBI) led the Vikings’ eight-hit attack. Cape next plays a 4:15 p.m. game at Salesianum on Thursday.
Polytech 5, Wilm. Friends 4: The Panthers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh, including the last three on a walk-off double from Conner Bartlett.
Michael Brubaker had two hits for Polytech in the game played at Frawley Stadium.
Lake Forest 8, Delmarva Christian 1: Winning pitcher Tristin McCray, who struck out six, and David Lewis combined to throw a four-hitter for the Spartans.
Jonathan Tyndall had three hits while Quinton Maris had two RBI for Lake, which scored three runs in the first.
Chester Furmanek reached base three times and Dylan Briggs had an RBI for the Royals.
Sussex Academy 12, Odyssey Charter 1: Wesley McLaughlin and Wyatt Skinner each had two hits for the Seahawks, who had all four of their seniors pitch in the win.
Conrad 14, First State Military 4: Jacob Porrini and Silas Coker all drove in runs for the Bulldogs.
Softball
Lake Forest 5, Delmarva Christian 3: Carley Rebuck had a two-run single in the fourth as the Spartans rallied past the Royals.
Addyson Stewart and Bobbi Newsome also had RBI while winning pitcher Carah Sumpter struck out five with no walks. Karly Cain had three of Lake Forest’s 11 hits.
Caesar Rodney 20, Cape Henlopen 0: Peyton Shields tossed a five-inning one-hitter with eight strikeouts and also homered for the Riders in the North victory.
CR, which broke the game open with a 10-run second, was paced by Stacey Deputy (3-for-3, homer, 4 RBI) and Bailey Minear (homer). The Riders finished with 20 hits.
Conrad 16, First State Military 1: Paige Holowka had two of the Bulldogs’ three hits in the loss.
Henlopen title game on Saturday: South champion Delmar will host North winner Sussex Central in the Henlopen Conference Championship game Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Tickets are $5. The two teams played on April 14 with Central winning, 4-0.
Boys’ lacrosse
First State Military 18, Sussex Central 5: The Bulldogs raised their record to 8-4 with the win.
Newark Charter 6, Lake Forest 5: The Patriots took a 5-4 halftime advantage before edging the Spartans.
Sanford 23, Milford 0: The Warriors tallied 15 first-half goals in the victory.
Sussex Tech 10, Lake Forest 9: The Ravens edged the Spartans to improve to 5-8.
Girls’ lacrosse
Cape Henlopen 20, Worcester Prep 3: Louise Rishko (4 goals, 2 assists), Elizabeth Rishko (3 goals, 2 assists) and Molly Mendes (1 goal, 6 assists) led the Vikings, who were up 14-1 at halftime.
Lake Forest 14, Odessa 7: Emma Massey netted seven goals and five assists to pace the Spartans.
Madison Houdek added three goals for Lake Forest, which got five saves from Giulia Sweet.
Middletown 12, Smyrna 9: Abigale Matthews and Jenna Davis netted three goals apiece while Addison Beamer made eight saves for the Eagles.
Milford 19, Newark 5: Freshman Hannah Zimmerman tallied 10 goals and seven assists — including the 100th goal of her career — in the Buccaneers’ victory.
Isabel Betts added four goals and three assists while Carley Mackert scored three times. Madison Stahl made six saves.
Boys’ volleyball
Cape Henlopen 3, Sussex Academy 0: The Vikings topped the Seahawks in a DBVCA playoff game, 25-14, 25-17, 25-18.
Leading Cape Henlopen were led by Brady Lamb (8 kills, 3 aces), Odin DeLazaro Potemski (7 kills, 2 aces) and Ethan Shuttleworth (3 kills, 25 assists).
The Vikings will host a quarterfinal game on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Dickinson 3, Smyrna 0: The Rams downed the Eagles in the DBVCA playoffs by scores of 25-18, 27-25, 25-15.
Girls’ soccer
Sussex Academy 4, Cape Henlopen 0: Kenna Webb scored twice in the first half while Tayler Flaherty added a goal and two assists for the Seahawks. Emma Westbrook made five saves.
The Vikings’ Brianna Burrell made 11 saves.
Caesar Rodney 5, Lake Forest 0: Elle Davis scored the first three goals for the Riders, who led only 1-0 at halftime.
Olivia Hudson added four assists for CR, which outshot the Spartans, 23-1.
Lake Forest’s Kyra Moyer made 12 saves.
Indian River 7, Sussex Tech 1: The Indians led only 1-0 at halftime before pulling away in the second half.
Sophia Scurci netted four goals while Hannah Bird added a goal and a pair of assists for IR. Alexandria Davidson made eight saves.
Lilly Short scored for the Ravens while Ebony Wilson made 10 saves.
Polytech 10, Seaford 2: Julia Coleman (1 assist) and Emma Coleman both scored twice to pace the Panthers.
Megan Popp added a goal and four assists for Polytech, which scored nine first-half goals.
Milford 6, Laurel 1: Reina Fogel had a goal and an assist as six different players scored for the Buccaneers.
Isabella Banks scored for the Bulldogs.
Woodbridge 2, Odyssey Charter 0: The Blue Raiders scored twice in the second half of the victory.
