Local roundup: Cape tops CR to set up showdown with Dover for North soccer title

Jacob Schell’s goal in the 30th minute stood up as Cape Henlopen High edged Caesar Rodney, 1-0, in a Henlopen North showdown boys’ soccer showdown on Tuesday evening.

The Vikings (4-1 North, 11-2 overall) will now play at Dover (5-1, 7-5-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m. with the North title on the line. Cape Henlopen still has a makeup North game with Polytech on Nov. 2.

Tuesday’s win was Cape’s first over the Riders since 2015.

Dru Schneider made 10 saves to earn the shutout for the Vikings while Aldo Hernandez-Becerra assisted on the game-winner. Both teams took 10 shots with CR holding an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Jacoby Sheaffer had five saves for the Riders (4-2 North, 9-4 overall).

Dover 5, Sussex Tech 0: The Senators netted four first-half goals before posting the North victory.

Smyrna 4, Milford 0: The Eagles netted three goals in the second half to put away the North victory.

Abenego Commune, Daniel Lerro, Ayomide Gbadebo and Zion-Maxwell Atta-Krah scored goals for Smyrna.

Sussex Central 7, Polytech 1: The Golden Knights took a 3-0 lead by halftime in the Henlopen North win.

Central out-shot the Panthers, 16-5, and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
James Watterton made nine saves for Polytech.

Indian River 2, Sussex Academy 2: The Seahawks scored twice in the second half as the top two teams in the Henlopen South played to a tie.

Polytech 4, Hodgson 0: The Panthers netted three second-half goals to put away the non-conference win on Monday.

Field hockey

Polytech 3, Sussex Central 1: The Panthers posted a Henlopen North victory over the Golden Knights.

Smyrna 3, Milford 0: The Eagles tallied a goal in each of the first three quarters before earning the North win.

Bree Moffett, Dru Moffett and London Bebout all scored goals for Smyrna, which held edges of 25-1 in shots and 18-3 in corners.

Melissa Mesidor made 15 saves for the Buccaneers.

Cape Henlopen 6, Caesar Rodney 1: The Vikings improved to 6-0 in the Henlopen North with the victory.

The Riders scored just the third goal that Cape Henlopen has allowed this season.

Lake Forest 10, Seaford 0: Emma Massey tallied three goals and an assist in the Spartans’ third straight victory.

Ellie Biddle and Malory Wood both scored twice for Lake Forest, which got goals from six players. The Spartans took 37 shots and had 12 corners.
Zurita Calderon-Perez made 21 saves for the Blue Jays.

Delmarva Christian 2, Holly Grove Christian 1: The Royals improved to 2-9 with the win on Monday.

Girls’ volleyball

Smyrna 3, Sussex Tech 0: The Eagles finished 7-0 in the Henlopen North with the 25-10, 25-7, 25-17 victory.

Smyrna will face South winner Indian River in the Henlopen Conference championship match on Saturday at Woodbridge at noon.

Anna Richardson (10 kills, 3 aces), Megan Carroll (7 kills, 5 assists) and Karalyn Osborne (3 lills, 2 aces, 12 assists) paced the Eagles.

Indian River 3, Seaford 0: The Indians finished 6-0 in the Henlopen South after registering a 25-9, 25-7, 25-11 win.

Cape Henlopen 3, Polytech 1: The Vikings took the Henlopen North victory by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-13, 26-24.

Cape Henlopen was led by Tatum Friend (14 kills), Kayleigh Mault (8 kills, 3 aces), Kalista Lawson (7 kills, 2 aces, 20 digs), Megan Smith (8 aces, 33 assists) and Ava Calciano (5 kills, 7 aces).

Caesar Rodney 3, Sussex Central 0: The Riders earned the North win by scores of 25-15, 25-9, 25-10.

Delmar 3, Sussex Tech 1: The Wildcats downed the Ravens, 8-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-22 on Monday.

College soccer

MEN, Maryland 4, Delaware 1: The No. 7-ranked Terrapins netted three goals in the first half before downing the Blue Hens.

Orri Thorhallsson scored for Delaware (4-9-2), which was out-shot 10-5.

UD women’s coach resigns: University of Delaware athletic director Chrissi Rawak announced on Tuesday that head women’s soccer coach Mike Barroqueiro has resigned from his position.

The Blue Hens finished their season on Sunday with a record of 2-11-5. In six season, Delaware went 32-55-22 under Barroqueiro

The Hens had only one winning season in that stretch, going 12-7 in 2019. Delaware’s players maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0, including a 3.234 GPA this past spring.
