Local roundup: Cape pulls away from Smyrna; Polytech, Central also win in baseball

Cape Henlopen High scored 10 runs over the last two innings to close out a 16-1 victory over Smyrna in Henlopen North baseball on Tuesday afternoon.

The win was the eighth in a row for the Vikings (9-2), who have scored 16 runs in three of their last five contests.

Isaac Terhune went 3-for-3 to pace Cape’s 15-hit attack. Nicholas Cox pitched a complete-game five-hitter with nine strikeouts in earning the win.

Smyrna, which got hits from five players, scored its lone run in the second inning.

Polytech 2, Dover 0: Connor Bartlett pitched a complete-game six-hitter with six strikeouts and only one walk as the Panthers won a North pitchers’ duel.

Polytech scored single runs in both the second and third,

Cole Greene threw a complete-game one-hitter and struck out 10 for the Senators.

Lake Forest 2, Woodbridge 1: Adam Schiff drove in Jonathan Tyndall with the winning run in the fifth as the Spartans won their third in a row.

Tristan McCray and Quinton Morris combined to throw a three-hitter with McCray and T.J. Hooks adding Lake’s other hits.

Seth Smart and William Hague combined on a three-hitter for he Blue Raiders while Logan Moran had an RBI single.

Sussex Central 10, Caesar Rodney 2: Brendan Anderson and Cole Rogers combined to pitch a five-hitter in the Golden Knights’ Henlopen North victory.

Jaxon Steen and Anderson had multiple hits for Central, which led 5-0 in the top of the third.

Andrew Rigby had an RBI for the Riders, who had four doubles among their five hits.

Delmar 1, Indian River 0: Andrew Callaway threw a six-inning three-hitter with 10 strikeouts to earn the shutout.

Tucker Pierson doubled home the game’s only run in the first inning for the Wildcats.

The Indians’ Frank Bunting also gave only three hits with four strikeouts.

Girls’ soccer

Smyrna 5, Indian River 2: Kelly Barr and Jade Balon scored goals three minutes apart in the final five minutes to polish off the Eagles’ win.

Barr had two goals and an assist with Desiree Zapata also scoring for Smyrna, which led 2-0 at halftime.

Isabella Scurci and Hannah Bird scored for the Indians, who closed within 3-2 in the 68th minute.

Caesar Rodney 2, Sussex Academy 1: Gabrielle Davis (1 assist) scored in the first half with Olivia Hudson adding a goal in the second for the Riders.

The Riders outshot the Seahawks, 16-6, before improving to 8-2.

Merrill Smith scored in the 65th minute for Sussex Academy, which got 10 saves from Emma Westbrook.

Dover 8, Laurel 0: Josselyn Ventura tallied two goals and a pair of assists in the Senators’ win.

Seven players scored for Dover, which netted seven second-half goals.

Polytech 2, Woodbridge 0: Kylee LaVere and Megan Popp both tallied second-half goals for the Panthers.

Sussex Tech 4, Lake Forest 0: Lilly Short netted all four goals for the Ravens with two in each half.

Ebony Wilson made three saves for Sussex Tech, which finished with advantages of 12-3 in shots and 6-5 in corner kicks.

The Spartans’ Kyra Moyer made six saves.

Cape Henlopen 2, Delmar 1: Goals from Giselle Garcia and Josephine Ingerski gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead before they held off the Wildcats.

Brianna Burrell made six saves for Cape as both teams finished with seven shots and one corner kick.

Delmar’s Lily Baker made five saves.

Softball

Indian River 13, Polytech 1: Kinsley Hall came within one out of pitching a five-inning one-hitter while striking out nine for the Indians.

Jaya Shaub (3 hits) and Jillian Coulbourn had three RBI apiece for IR (8-3), which won its fifth game in a row

Polytech’s Karis Minner broke up the no-hitter with a two-out RBI single in the fifth.

Laurel 6, Smyrna 2: The Bulldogs improved to 8-4 after picking up their third win in a row.

Laurel is now 4-0 against Henlopen North teams this season.

Cape Henlopen 11, Sussex Academy 0: Abby Marsh and Bri Windish combined on a five-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Vikings, who scored seven runs in the fourth.

Ava Calciano had three RBI while Alivia Heers, who homered, Marsh and Ava Simeone all drove in two runs.

Caesar Rodney 8, Woodbridge 0: The Riders improved to 11-1 after registering its fifth shutout.

Boys’ lacrosse

Indian River 26, Odessa 0: Reece Stone (5 assists), Maxwell Forrey (1 assist) and Blake Brightman all netted five goals in the Indians’ non-conference victory.

Stone picked up the 100th point of his career.

Caravel 17, Milford 5: Milford dropped to 2-7 with the non-conference setback.

College golf

DSU women lead tourney: The Delaware State women’s golf team holds the top spot after the opening round of the HBCU Women’s Collegiate Championship on Tuesday.

The Hornets hold a six-stroke lead over second-place North Carolina A&T in the nine-team tournament at Eagle’s Landing Country Club.

DSU’s Jirada Kluaymaingarm shares the top of the individual leader board with Christyn Carr of NCA&T at 75 (+3). Anna Ferreyra-Heit and Nattavadee Khunsri are tied for second on the Hornets and tied share third place in the field at 78 (+6).

College baseball

St. Joe’s 4, Delaware 2: The Hawks scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning before downing the Blue Hens (22-17).

Joey Loynd had three of Delaware’s six hits.

College softball

George Washington 10, Delaware State 2: The Hornets (4-30) jumped out to an early lead, and only trailed by a run after five innings, but struggled down the stretch.

Dallas Speicher-Ramirez was 3-for-3 to lead the Hornets’ seven-hit attack.
