Local roundup: Cape Henlopen, Woodbridge girls to meet again; CR advances seven in wrestling

Cape Henlopen and Woodbridge have had the top two girls’ basketball teams in the Henlopen Conference for several years now.

So it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that the Vikings and Blue Raiders keep running into each other.

On Friday evening, third-seeded Cape Henlopen took a 10-point halftime lead before holding on to edge No. 14 St. Mark’s, 44-43, in the second round of the DIAA state tournament.

The victory means that the Vikings (20-2) will host Woodbridge (19-4) on Monday at 7 p.m. in the state quarterfinals. The two teams just met in the Henlopen Conference championship game last Saturday with Cape Henlopen edging the Raiders, 31-30.

Monday’s contest will mark the sixth time the two programs have met in the postseason since 2019 with the Vikings holding a 3-2 edge. The matchup also means that there will be a downstate team playing in the state semifinals on Wednesday at the Carpenter Center.

On Friday, Cape Henlopen led 23-13 at halftime before the Spartans went on a 20-11 third-quarter run to close within 34-33.

Senior Ja'Ona Lee (17 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) and Faith Re (11 points) paced the Vikings. Re sank three three-pointers.

St. Mark's got 16 points, with four three-pointers, from freshman Sophia Baffone.

Woodbridge 42, Archmere 36: The No. 11 Raiders rallied to upset the No. 6 Auks and earn their spot in Monday’s quarterfinals.

Woodbridge trailed 26-23 going into the fourth quarter before earning thier second tourney win of the week.

A.I. DuPont 74, Smyrna 60: The No. 8 Tigers pulled away down the stretch to top the ninth-seeded Eagles in the second round of the state tournament.

Smyrna finishes the season with a record of 15-7. The Tigers, who led 41-29 at halftime, got 34 points from Imirah Trader.

The Eagles used a 16-6, third-quarter run to get within 47-45 going into the fourrth quarter. Sophomore Kai Burnette had 16 points with senior Jayde Rivera adding 15 points for Smyrna.

Tatnall 56, Polytech 23: The fourth-seeded Hornets downed the No. 13 Panthers,  who finish the season with a record of 16-6.

Caravel 49, Delmarva Christian 21: The fifth-seeded Buccaneers - the defending state champions  - downed the No. 12 Royals on Friday.

Delmarva Christian finishes the season at 18-4.

Wrestling

CR puts seven in state semis: Caesar Rodney High had seven wrestlers reach the semifinals while host Cape Henlopen had six as the DIAA individual state tournament got underway on Friday evening.

The semis are slated to start at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the finals on tap for 7 p.m. at Cape Henlopen. A total of 23 Henlopen made it to the semifinals with at least one in every weight class except 165 pounds.

At 106 pounds, two downstate wrestlers reached the semis: Caesar Rodney’s Alex McEvoy and Sussex Tech’s Anthony Andrews.

At 113, Sussex Central’s top-seeded Malachi Stratton began his quest for a second-straight state title with a pair of pins. CR’s Cole Moffett also had two pins on Friday.

At 120, Milford’s fifth-seeded Vincent Jenkins upset No. 4 Gavin Mundy of DMA in the quarterfinals. Third-seeded Nick Moore of CR is also in the semis.

At 126, sixth-seeded Holt Baker of Cape Henlopen knocked off No. 3 Qwantez Watkins of Smyrna, 17-10, in the quarterfinals. He’ll face No. 2 Trevor Copes of CR, who notched a pair of pins on Friday.

At 132, two Henlopen competitors are in the semifinals: CR’s No. 4 Nathan Moore and Cape Henlopen’s second-seeded Nick Walker.

At 138, the only downstate wrestler to reach the semis was Laurel’s fourth-seeded Stanley Pete.

At 144, Sussex Tech’s Dustin Elliott upset No. 4 Case Dempsey of Lake Forest, 11-6. Third-seeded Andrew Long of Sussex Central also advanced.

At 150, three Henlopen wrestlers reached the semifinals led by top-seeded Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts of Lake Forest.

Sixth-seeded Cody Waski of CR, who pinned third-seeded Sam Munch of Salesianum, will face No. 2 Andrew Schaen of Cape Henlopen in the other semifinal.

At 157, Cape Henlopen’s third-seeded Luke Bender and CR’s No. 4 Cameron Cataldi both had quarterfinal pins.

At 165, no Henlopen wrestlers made the semis.

At 175, Cape Henlopen’s top-seeded C.J. Fritchman and Sussex Central’s fifth-seeded Gabe Cannon will meet in the semis after both won by pin in the quarterfinals.

At 190, Cape Henlopen’s second-seeded Alex Taylor reached the semifinals with a pair of pins.

At 215, sixth-seeded Khelei Tillman upset the third seed — Jeremiah Eastburn of Conrad — to make it to the semifinals.

At 285, Laurel’s fifth-seeded Joseph Baynard made it through to the semifinals.

Boys’ basketball

Salesianum 72, Polytech 53: Sallies broke the game open in the second half to down Polytech High in the second round of the DIAA boys’ basketball tournament on Thursday night.

The fifth-seeded Sals led 28-25 at halftime before going on their run in the second half. The Panthers, seeded No. 12 in the tournament, ended their season at 17-5 overall.

Salesianum advanced to play at No. 4 seed Tower Hill School in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Howard 64, Indian River 59: Brendon Bradford netted 35 points but the Indians were edged by Howard in the second round on Thursday.

The Indians finished with a 16-6 record. No. 3 Howard will host No. 6 Appoquinimink Saturday at 4 p.m.

Appoquinimink 57, Laurel 46: The Bulldogs fell in the second round of the state tournament to end their season with a 16-6 record.

College basketball

Two Hens make All-CAA: Delaware’s Jameer Nelson Jr. and Jyáre Davis each landed on the All-CAA teams in men’s basketball.

Nelson was named to the All-CAA first team and All-CAA Defensive Team with Davis tabbed All-CAA third team.

Nelson Jr. tallied his best collegiate season as he led the CAA in points, steals, points per game, and steals per game. He averaged 20.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.5 steals per outing while shooting 45.1 percent from the field.

Nelson, Jr. has the fifth-longest double-digit point streak in program history at 27. He has registered 15 20-point outings and four 30-point games. Landing on the Oscar Robinson Trophy Watch List, Nelson Jr. has reached the 15-point plateau in 24 of 27 games, including 19 of his last 20.

Davis, who finished second on the team in scoring and rebounding, finished his sophomore season with 15.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per outing.

WOMEN, Delaware State 68, UMES 44: Savannah Brooks scored a game-high 20 points as the Hornets earned a victory in their regular season finale.

Tyshonne Tollie contributed a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds for Delaware State. Jayla Johnson also finished in double figures with 12 points.

The Hornets opened up their lead thanks to a 23-13 run in the second quarter. DelState (5-9 MEAC, 7-18 overall) are seeded sixth in the upcoming MEAC Tournament and will face No. 3 Howard on March 9 at 2 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.

Delaware 79, North Carolina A&T 75, OT: The Blue Hens stormed back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Aggies 24-11, to tie the contest at 69-69 before winning it in overtime.

Klarke Sconiers netted 20 points to lead four players in double figures for Delaware (9-8 CAA, 16-12 overall). Makayla Pippin (13), Jewel Smalls (11) and Kharis Idom (10) all reached double digits.

North Carolina A&T, which is playing its first season as a CAA member, fell to 11-6 CAA, 17-11 overall. It was only the second meeting between the two programs.

The game, which started at 11 a.m. for Education Day, drew a reported crowd of 4,423 at the Carpenter Center.

MEN, UMES 64, Delaware State 58: The Hornets were up by six points in the second half but led the lead slip away.

Three different players paced Delaware State with 13 points apiece — Martaz Robinson, Khyrie Staten and Cory Barnes. The Hornets (4-10 MEAC, 6-23 overall) will be seeded seventh in the MEAC Tournament and will face No. 2 North Carolina Central in the opening round on March 8 at 8 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.
