Local roundup: Cape Henlopen, Sussex Tech pick up football wins

Cape Henlopen High pulled away to a 42-14 win over Delmar in football on Friday night.

The Vikings, who had an open date last week, improved to 3-2 and avenged a loss to the Wildcats a year ago.

Delmar had a two-game losing streak snapped to fall to 2-3.

St. Elizabeth 39, Indian River 14: Quasim Benson ran for five touchdowns as the unbeaten Vikings downed the Indians.

St. Elizabeth opened up a 27-7 halftime advantage before improving to 5-0.
Jayvion Chandler and Hayden Hall ran for touchdowns for IR (2-3), which had a two-game winning streak stopped.

Salesianum 46, Caesar Rodney 8: Johnathan Benjamin 71-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the Riders their first lead of the season. But the Sals ran off the next 46 points to keep CR (0-6) winless.

Ben Anton caught a pair of scoring passes for Sallies (4-1), which led 36-8 by halftime.

Sussex Tech 35, Brandywine 6: The Ravens even their record at 3-3 after posting their second victory in a row on Friday.

First State Military 31, Dickinson 6: The Bulldogs made it two wins ina row to raise their record to 2-3.

Laurel 42, Woodbridge 0: Kylse Wilson ran for three touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ shutout win on Thursday night.

The victory was the eighth in a row for the Bulldogs (5-0), who led 21-0 at halftime. Wilson scored on runs of one, 34 and 11 yards.

Kaden Shockley, Xavier Limehouse and Elijah Niblett also ran for TDs. Laurel has allowed only 13 points this season.

Red Lion Christian 60, Early College 0: The Lions rolled to the victory over the Hornets on Friday night.

Field hockey

Lake Forest 4, Laurel 0: Four different players scored for the Spartans in the Henlopen South win.

Emma Massey, Carmella Gannon, Morgan Durand and Roxanne Troutman all scored for Lake Forest, which took 10 shots and 14 corners.

The Bulldogs’ Jillian Harwood made six saves.

Smyrna 5, Caravel 0: Ava Pierce tallied a goal in each half to pace the Eagles (6-1) on Thursday.

Smyrna, which led 2-0 at halftime, also got goals from Dru Moffett (1 assist), Reese Nacrelli and Kirsten Johnson. The Eagles finished with advantages of 13-1 in shots and 10-0 in corners.

Ursuline 3, Delmarva Christian 0: Elizabeth Moyer made three saves for the Royals in the loss.

Boys’ soccer

Delmar 4, Odyssey Charter 0: The Wildcats got second-half goals from four different players in their win on Thursday.

Damian Kunie, Joseph Brown, Dilber Marquez Saenz and Mason Pusey all scored for Delmar, which held edges of 17-4 in shots and 11-0 in corner kicks. Caleb Ritchey made three saves.

Laurel 3, Smyrna 2: The Bulldogs scored the only goal in the second to break a 2-2 tie and earn the win.

Sussex Central 5, Concord 0: The Golden Knights tallied three goals in the first half before taking the win.

Seaford 6, Sussex Tech 2: The Blue Jays out-scored the Ravens, 4-1, in the second half to put away the victory.

Indian River 7, Delmarva Christian 0: The Indians netted four first-half goals in the non-conference victory.

Christiana 4, Lake Forest 0: Cole Murphy made eight saves for the Spartans in the non-conference loss.

Girls’ volleyball

Lake Forest 3, Early College 0: The Spartans earned the Henlopen South win by scores of 25-8, 25-8, 25-17.

Indian River 3, Woodbridge 0: The Indians downed the Blue Raiders, 25-12, 25-18, 25-12, in the Henlopen South matchup.

Sussex Academy 3, Delmar 0: The Seahawks picked up a 25-18, 25-23, 25-13 Henlopen South victory on Thursday.

Sussex Tech 3, Milford 2: The Ravens edged the Buccaneers in a Henlopen North matchup.

College field hockey

Delaware 3, William & Mary 2: Noelle Sabbagh (Cape Henlopen) scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes to play as the Blue Hens knocked off the No. 20 Tribe.

After weaving her way through defenders, Lia Becker found a wide-open Sabbagh, who snuck the ball past the diving Tribe goalkeeper. It was Sabbagh’s fifth goal of the season.

The Blue Hens (2-1 CAA, 4-8 overall) extended their winning streak to three games in a row and picked up their first win over a ranked opponent this season.

College volleyball

Delaware State 3, North Carolina Central 0: The Hornets improved to 3-1 in the MEAC, 13-4 overall with the 25-12, 25-22, 25-14 victory.

Valeria Otero tied a team-high in kills (8) and with one service ace as well as two assisted blocks, she collected 10.0 points on the night. Karen Cordero landed seven kills and a team-best three service aces for a match-best 10.5 points.

Alondra Maldonado joined Otero with eight kills. Malgorzata Andersohn (17) and Alayna Lacy (15) combined for 32 of the team’s 40 total assists.

College soccer

WOMEN, NJIT 4, Delaware State 0: Brieana Hallo, Kiarah Jones and Jada Lee all recorded a shot on goal for the Hornets. Hallo led the offensive effort with a pair of shots.
