Local roundup: Cape Henlopen rallies to pin loss on Caesar Rodney

Cape Henlopen High won the final three individual matches to pull out a 39-33 victory over Caesar Rodney in Henlopen North wrestling on Wednesday night.

The match was a rematch of last year’s DIAA Division I dual-meet state finals. The Vikings (2-0 North, 2-0 overall) have now won their last three meetings with the Riders (0-1 North, 1-1 overall).

The scores of individual matches were not available. Cape Henlopen finished the night with wins from Joshua Wright (138 pounds), Kingston Davis (144) and Andrew Schaen (150).

Milford 60, Dover 24: Emily Thode (106 pounds) registered a 48-second fall for the Buccaneers’ fastest pin in the Henlopen North win.

Also winning by fall for Milford were Da’zhon Frazier (138), Samuel Dupalis (144), Nathan Hague (157), Oliver Barnes (165), Brian Seward (175) and Devin McNamara (215).

The Senators got a 20-second pin from Jamar Harris (285) with other falls coming from Joe Jackson (126), Silas Sheranko (132) and Taiquan Scott (150).

College football

Two Hens earn All-American honors: Delaware linebacker Johnny Buchnanan and safety Kedrick Whitehead were both named to the Associated Press All-America Teams.

Buchanan earned first-team recognition, while Whitehead was selected to the third team.

Buchanan led FCS with 150 total tackles. The All-CAA first-team selection tied for second on the Delaware defense with 8.5 TFL and also added 1.5 sacks along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

A finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best defensive player in FCS, Buchanan finished just three tackles shy of tying the Delaware single-season record.

Whitehead ranked third on the team with 73 tackles to go along with 3.5 TFL, 1.0 sacks and five pass breakups. The Middletown High grad tied for the team lead with two interceptions while also forcing a fumble and recovering another.

College volleyball

Hens’ Mason earns national honor: Delaware volleyball senior outside hitter Lani Mason was named a AVCA All-American honorable mention. She is the first Blue Hen to collect AVCA All-America recognition since Stephanie Barry in 2007.

Mason has led the nation in kills per set from Oct. 2 through Oct. 13 and currently ranks sixth in the nation with 5.10 kills per set. She closed out the campaign averaging 5.54 points p/set (career-best 604 points), 5.03 kills p/set (career-best 548 kills) and 2.83 digs p/set (career-best 308 digs) in 109 sets played.

College field hockey

UD’s Duffhuis named All-American: Julia Duffhuis of the Delaware field hockey was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-American second team. She also made the second team in 2021.

Duffhuis led the Blue Hens in goals with 14 and added four assists, recorded her first career hat trick against Northeastern in the CAA semifinals, and scored a goal in six of her last seven games.

College swimming

Two Hens in international event: Toni Sabev and Miguel Vasquez of the Delaware men’s swimming and diving program will compete in the SC World Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

Sabev will be representing Bulgaria, while Vasquez will represent Guatemala.
Sabev has already set Delaware program records this season in the 100 breast (52.17) and 200 breast (1:57.67). He’s also finished in first place in 100 breast six times, first place in the 200 breast two times, and a first-place in the 200 IM once.

Vasquez, a former all-conference selection in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay, has finished in the top three in the 100 free in five of his six meets this season.
