Cape Henlopen High tallied a goal in each of the first two quarters before downing Smyrna, 2-0, in their Henlopen North field hockey showdown on Thursday afternoon.
Addison Basile and Mackinzie Brown scored for the Vikings with Hannah Maney picking up a pair of assists. Morgan Newcomb made three saves for Cape Henlopen (3-0 North, 7-0 overall), which finished with advantages of 13-5 in shots and 12-2 in corners.
The Vikings haven’t allowed a goal this season.
Halle Geiger made 12 saves for the Eagles (2-1 North, 5-1 overall).
The contest was a rematch of last year’s DIAA Division I state finals, which the Vikings won, 4-0.
Dover 2, Polytech 1, OT: Hadley Lewicki’s overtime goal gave the Senators the North win.
Ellisyn Arthur scored Dover’s first goal off an assist from Lewicki with
Savannah Strauss making 10 saves. The Panthers held advantages of 26-6 in shots and 16-4 in corners.
Molly Kenney scored for Polytech with Jourdyn Johnson stopping five shots.
Caesar Rodney 3, Sussex Central 1: The Riders scored twice in the first quarter en route to the North victory.
Rachel Smith, Brogan Callahan and Peyton Shields all scored for CR while Bailey Minear made five saves. The Riders out-shot the Golden Knights, 14-6.
Central’s Leah Layfield scored in the second quarter. Olivia Justice made 11 saves.
Milford 3, Sussex Tech 2: The Buccaneers scored three straight goals to open up a 3-1 lead in the North victory.
Milford got two goals from Madisyn Hitchens, a goal and assist from Bailey Masten and a combined eight saves from Melissa Mesidor and Eve Sekscinski.
The Bucs out-shot the Ravens, 22-13.
Peyton Miller and Karli Penrod scored for Sussex Tech with Melea Pusey making 11 saves.
Delmar 11, Indian River 1: Jordyn Hollamon (1 assist) tallied five goals with Josie Hollamon (1 assist) adding three in the Wildcats’ South win.
Delmar (8-0) held advantages of 37-3 in shots and 17-1 in corners.
IR’s goal was only the second allowed by the Wildcats this season and the first since their season opener. Jazmin Mayfield made 21 saves.
Sussex Academy 10, Laurel 1: Natalee Petty scored four goals — one in each quarter — while Morgan Leeper added two in the Seahawks’ South win.
Sussex Academy out-shot the Bulldogs, 18-2, and finished with a 12-1 advantage in corners.
Carlie Venables scored Laurel’s goal and Jillian Harwood made six saves.
Girls’ volleyball
Smyrna 3, Caesar Rodney 1: The Eagles won the last two sets in posting a 25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23 victory in a Henlopen North matchup.
Anna Richardson had 20 kills while Elise Carter had 11 for Smyrna (7-0). Karalyn Osborne (6 kills, 33 assists), Carly Timblin (6 aces, 14 digs) and Abigayle Osborne (16 assists) also led the Eagles.
Cape Henlopen 3, Sussex Central 0: The Vikings won the North match by scores of 25-15, 25-21, 25-17.
Kalista Lawson had 10 kills and four aces for Cape Henlopen, Kayleigh Mault had six kills and an ace and Megan Smith added 25 assists.
Dover 3, Sussex Tech 0: The Senators won the North match by scores of 25-11, 25-7, 25-8.
Lake Forest 3, Woodbridge 1: The Spartans won the last three sets to take the 23-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-15 South victory.
Iyana Mims had seven kills and two aces for the Blue Raiders while Kyrsis Brito Beltran had five aces and 25 digs.
Indian River 3, Early College 0: The Indians won the South match by scores of 25-6, 25-6, 25-7.
Delmarva Christian 3, Sussex Academy 0: The Royals raised their record to 6-1 with the 25-9, 25-17, 25-13 win.
Elaina Millaway (14 kills, 3 aces, 9 digs), Ellie Millaway (10 kills, 3 aces, 12 digs), Evelyn Jensen (9 kills), Rachel Fetterman (15 digs), Tessa Kwiatkowski (3 aces, 20 assists) and Maggie Kwiatkowski (12 assists) led Delmarva Christian.
Boys’ soccer
Caesar Rodney 5, Sussex Central 4: Sawyer Ott and Derek Hawkins netted second-half goals to snap a 3-3 tie in the Riders’ Henlopen North victory.
Thad Glasser scored CR’s first two goals while Trevor Sullivan added a first-half goal. Jacoby Sheaffer made 11 saves as both teams took 15 shots.
Danny Roblero-Perez, Javier Escobar-Perez, Wilder Ramirez-Sandoval and Gabriel Perez Bartolon all scored goals for Central.
Smyrna 1, Cape Henlopen 0: Abenego Commune scored in the 19th minute before the Eagles handed the Vikings their first loss of the season.
Smyrna goalie Alex Valle Roman made nine saves as Cape Henlopen (6-1) held advantages of 9-5 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks.
The Vikings’ Dru Schneider made four saves.
College volleyball
Delaware State 3, UMES 0: Sydney Lewis Lewis tallied seven kills on 14 total attacks to pace the Hornets in the MEAC win.
Along with a game-high eight kills, Danielle Allen notched two assisted blocks while the setting duo Malgorzata Andersohn (14) and Alayna Lacy (13) combined for 27 of the Hornets’ 33 total assists.
College basketball
UD’s Allen signs pro deal: Former Delaware men’s basketball standout Ryan Allen has signed a pro contract with Cactus Tbilisi in Georgia.
Allen, who ranks third all-time in UD history with 1,821 career points, becomes the third Blue Hen to sign a pro contract since the conclusion of last season, joining Kevin Anderson and Dylan Painter.
