Local roundup: Cape Henlopen girls top Dover; Polytech boys win again

Cape Henlopen High built a 13-point lead after three quarters before posting a 51-44 win over Dover in Henlopen North girls’ basketball on Thursday night.

The first-place Vikings (8-0 North, 10-2 overall) got a game-high 20 points from Faith Re, who sank three three-pointers. Mya Maull (13 points, 4 assists) and Amalia Frutchman (9 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks) also led Cape Henlopen.

The Senators, who out-scored the Vikings, 15-9, in the fourth quarter, got 14 points from Sara Zionna Benson. Ashtyn Torbert and Lily Harper both added 10 points.

Polytech 48, Sussex Tech 30: The Panthers opened up a 10-point first-quarter advantage before posting the win.

Skay Naranjo (16 points, 15 rebounds), Kallie Hopkins (15 points, 14 rebounds) and Sierra Henry (14 points) alls reached double figures for Polytech.

Seaford 48, Laurel 29: Sophomore Amira Tingle poured in 33 points with 13 rebounds and seven steals to pace the Blue Jays to the South win.

Seaford out-scored the Bulldogs, 32-16, in the second half to pull away.

Woodbridge 63, Delmar 24: The South-leading Blue Raiders were up by only six points before netting 24 unanswered points in the second quarter.

Reghan Robinson, who sank four three-pointers, totaled 17 points for Woodbridge. De’Asya Jones (13 points, 8 steals) and Payton Keeler (12 points, 5 assists) also led the Raiders.

Lake Forest 50, Indian River 19: The Spartans tallied 19 unanswered points in the third quarter to break the game open.

Junior Breanna Johnson netted 23 points for Lake Forest.

Delmarva Christian 56, Sts. Peter & Paul 36: The Royals raised their record to 10-0 with the win. Journey Handy and Ainsley Bell (8 rebounds, 4 assists) had 21 points apiece.

Boys’ basketball

Polytech 67, Sussex Tech 50: The Panthers built 63-37 lead before improving to 9-0 in the Henlopen North.

Cape Henlopen 62, Dover 60: The Vikings out-scored the Senators, 21-17, in the fourth quarter before handing the Senators their second loss of the week.

Indian River 53, Lake Forest 48, OT: Brendon Bradford netted 26 points to pace the Indians to the overtime South victory.

The contest went to OT tied at 40-40 after IR led by seven at halftime. Jamaal Jones added 18 points after sinking six of the Indians’ eight three-pointers.

Darius Miller and Jackson Starkey scored 17 points each for the Spartans.

Sussex Central 44, Smyrna 39: The Golden Knights took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter before picking up the North victory.

Wrestling

Cape Henlopen 67, Polytech 0: C.J. Fritchman (175 pounds) had a pin in 1:36 before Robert Payton (190) followed with one in 1:33 in the Vikings' Henlopen North win on Wednesday night.

Cape Henlopen, which improved to 5-0 in the North, 11-3 overall, also got pins from Tripp Gannon (106), Cale Baker (113), Joshua Wright (138), Braydon Cole (144) and Hayden Wheeler (165).

Woodbridge 57, Seaford 24: The Blue Jays tallied the match’s first 36 points before picking up the Henlopen South victory.

Woodbridge collected pins from Travis Allen (126), Scott Latham (132), Qualier Morales (138), Quincy Risper (175) and Jeramiah Thompson (215).

Seaford got pins from Coleman Willey (150), Zach Holmes (157) and Sean Martinez (165).

NASCAR

Dover’s Hosfelt gets new position: Speedway Motorsports officials announced a promotion of longtime Dover Motor Speedway official, Jim Hosfelt, to vice president of safety and security at the facility and director of safety and security for Speedway Motorsports.

Hosfelt joined Dover Motor Speedway in 2014 after serving as chief of the Dover police force, capping a 26-year career with the department. Hosfelt supervises the speedway’s expanded public safety department and coordinates partnerships among local, state and federal law enforcement and transportation agencies.

An Air Force veteran and graduate of the FBI National Academy, Hosfelt has been elected to seats on Dover City Council (2015-17) and Kent County Levy Court (2017-19).

In his new role, Hosfelt will continue managing security and public safety efforts for DMS while serving as a security liaison on behalf of all Speedway Motorsports facilities with NASCAR and federal agencies. Hosfelt will be tasked with sharing best practices and finding ways to enhance the fan experience across all Speedway Motorsports venues.
