Westtown, (Pa.) High built a 20-point lead after three quarters before downing Cape Henlopen, 64-47, in girls’ basketball on the opening day of Slam Dunk to the Beach basketball tournament on Monday afternoon.
It was the first girls’ game in the history of the traditionally boys-only team tourney played at Cape Henlopen.
The Vikings led only once, when Lauryn Heard netted the game’s first basket 1:25 into the contest. Heard later tied the game at 5-5 on a free throw.
But the Moose led 18-11 by the end of the first quarter and 30-14 by halftime. Kaylene Smikle collected a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds for Westtown.
Morgan Mahoney had 17 points and seven rebounds for Cape Henlopen while Mehkia Applewhite added 13 points and three steals.
The only other Delaware school in Slam Dunk, Seaford’s boys’ squad, plays today at 3:30 p.m. against Our Savior Lutheran School (N.Y).
Delaware Military 44, Caesar Rodney 39: The Seahawks outscored the Riders, 13-6, in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory on Monday.
The contest, which was part of the Diamond State Classic, was played at Tatnall. CR (3-3) next hosts Conrad on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
College field hockey
Hens’ Duffhuis honored: Delaware sophomore Julia Duffhuis was named to the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Field Hockey team.
Duffhuis adds All-ECAC to her long list of accolades from this season. She earned her first career All-American second-team honor and was tabbed to the Synapse Sports Division I All-American third team as well.
The Bergeijk, The Netherlands native was named to the NFHCA Division I Mid-Atlantic Region first team, named CAA Defensive Player of the Year, earned a spot on the All-CAA first team and was named CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
A key member of the Blue Hens’ defense, Duffhuis appeared in all 22 games for the Blue Hens, making 21 starts. She led the team in goals (13) and points (29).
Her 0.59 goals per game average ranked 31st in NCAA Division I, while her 1.32 points per game average ranked 47th.
