Cape Henlopen and Delmar High will both begin their roads toward state titles as the No. 1 seeds in the brackets for the DIAA Division I and II field hockey state tournaments that were determined on Friday.
Seven Henlopen Conference teams are among the 20 squads who made the two state tourney fields.
The Division II tournament starts on Tuesday but the three downstate schools in that bracket all received first-round byes as one of the top eight seeds.
In Saturday’s Division II quarterfinals, top-seeded Delmar (15-0) will play at Sussex Academy at 11 a.m. against the winner of the first-round matchup between Caravel and Wilm. Friends. Indian River (14-1) is the No. 2 seed and will play at Sussex Academy at 1 p.m. against either Newark Charter or Brandywine.
Also on Saturday, at 11 a.m., third-seeded Lake Forest (11-3-1) will host the winner of the Tower Hill-St. Mark’s matchup.
The eight-team Division I tournament begins with the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Top-seeded Cape Henlopen (14-1) will host No. 8 Wilmington Charter (10-4-1) at 3:30 p.m. and No. 4 Polytech (10-4-1) hosts No. 5 Mt. Pleasant (12-2-1) at 2:30 p.m. In a doubleheader at Delaware Military, No. 7 Smyrna (9-5-1) faces No. 2 Padua (12-3) at 4 p.m. with No. 6 Dover (9-4-2) then playing a 6 p.m. contest against No. 3 Concord (13-2) at 6 p.m.
Boys’ soccer
Five downstate teams in brackets: Five Henlopen Conference teams have made the fields for the DIAA Division I and II boys’ soccer state tournaments that were determined on Friday.
Caesar Rodney, Polytech and Sussex Central are in the eight-team Division I bracket with Indian River and Sussex Academy making the 12-team Division II bracket.
Sussex Academy will be the only downstate squad in action when the Division II tourney begins on Tuesday evening. The seventh-seeded Seahawks (10-4) will face No. 10 Newark Charter (8-5-2) at Dover at 6 p.m.
As the No. 3 seed, Henlopen South champion Indian River (12-2-1) won’t play until Saturday’s second round at Milford at 5 p.m. The Indians will take on the winner of the first-round contest between No. 6 Brandywine and No. 11 Conrad.
The Division I tournament starts with the quarterfinals on Saturday. In a doubleheader at Dover, No. 8 Sussex Central (9-5-1) takes on top-seeded Salesianum (14-1) at 5 p.m. with No. 5 Polytech (10-2-3) then facing No. 4 Wilmington Charter (11-4) at 7 p.m.
Henlopen North champion Caesar Rodney (13-2) is seeded third and will play No. 6 Middletown (10-1-4) at Milford at 7 p.m.
Football
Sussex Tech 27, Caesar Rodney 21: Kevin Custis provided the go-ahead touchdown for the Ravens on a 43-yard rush in the fourth quarter.
It was the fourth rushing touchdown of the day for Custis. His longest was from 60 yards.
Kendall Smith scored the tying touchdown for Caesar Rodney with a 71-yard rush in the fourth quarter.
First State Military Academy 21, Tatnall 6: The Bulldogs earned the Diamond State Conference victory on Friday.
College field hockey
Delaware 5, William & Mary 1: No. 12 Delaware jumped out to an early lead and never looked back Friday evening as the Blue Hens topped No. 23 William & Mary, 5-1, to clinch a portion of the CAA Regular Season title.
With the win, UD locks up the No. 1 spot in next weekend’s CAA Tournament.
Blue Hens junior tri-captain Lotte de Koning, who returned to play last Sunday after missing 10 games due to injury, looked like her old self as she captured two goals for Delaware.
Classmate Sophie Giezeman also collected two goals whilefellow junior Femke Strien added four points of her own with one goal and two assists.
