Cadence McMahon scored in overtime to lift Cape Henlopen High to a 3-2 win over Milford in Henlopen North girls’ soccer on Friday evening.
Giselle Garcia tallied a pair of second-half goals for the Vikings, who got six saves from Brianna Burrell. Cape held advantages of 13-8 in shots and 8-4 in corner kicks.
Lila Mergner scored in the first half for the Buccaneers before Bay Rothermel tied the contest at 2-2 on a goal in the 73rd minute. Milford’s Allyson Perry made 10 saves.
Delmar 9, Lake Forest 1: Maci Bradford tallied three-straight second-half goals in the Wildcats’ Henlopen South win.
Mackenzie Carroll added two goals and a pair of assists for Delmar, which finished with advantages of 13-8 in shots and 7-4 in corner kicks.
Kadija Bundu scored for the Spartans.
Delmarva Christian 3, Woodbridge 0: The Royals scored twice in the second half to close out the victory.
Baseball
Lake Forest 6, Seaford 0: Winning pitcher Tristan McCray struck out six in five innings as he and David Lewis combined on a two-hit shutout.
Jonathan Tyndall (2-for-3), McCray, Rhett Robbins and Quade Gannon all drove in runs for the Spartans.
Relief pitcher Sean Martinez doubled for the Blue Jays.
Cape Henlopen 11, Caesar Rodney 5: Austin Rhue had three hits, with a triple and double, scored three runs and stole two bases to pace the Vikings’ North win.
Nick Cox and Brenn Scott (2 hits) both had three RBI while starting pitcher Josh Reinhold earned the victory.
Mason Bush had two hits and an RBI for the Riders.
Softball
Smyrna 6, Milford 5: Makayla Brantley scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on Meghan Shirey’s groundout as the Eagles rallied for the North win.
Brantley and Lacie Donovan (2 RBI) both went 2-for-3 for Smyrna, which scored three runs in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.
Lauren Dickerson and Lillie Harris each had two RBI for Milford.
Seaford 4, Lake Forest 3: The Blue Jays scored twice in the top of the eighth on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Shea Cooper to pull out the victory.
Winning pitcher Hannah Moore struck out six.
Karly Cain had two hits for the Spartans.
Middletown 13, Polytech 11: The Panthers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh before falling short.
Julia MacConnell (2 RBI) and Karis Minner had two hits apiece for Polytech with Cheyenne Silves adding a pair of RBI.
Boys’ lacrosse
Dover 11, Sussex Tech 4: The Senators earned the Henlopen North victory on Friday.
Sussex Academy 16, Indian River 15: The Seahawks edged the Indians in a Henlopen South match to improve to 2-0.
Delmar 11, Woodbridge 4: The Wildcats evened their record at 1-1 with the Henlopen South win.
Girls’ lacrosse
Smyrna 19, Indian River 5: Madison Fillo (1 assist) netted six goals with Regan Nacrelli (4 assists) adding five in the Eagles’ win.
Jenna Davis and Janna Fretz also contributed three goals and an assist for
Smyrna, which led 12-4 at halftime. Addison Beamer made eight saves.
Kylie Harris tallied four goals and an assist for IR, which got 11 saves from Kaylee Schmidt.
Cape Henlopen 9, Queen Anne’s, Md. 8: Louise Rishko netted three goals with Elizabeth Rishko and Molly Mendes both adding two goals and a pair assists to lead the Vikings.
Cape, which led 5-4 at halftime, held a 22-14 edge in shots.
Dover 19, Lake Forest 1: Kyleigh Dill (2 assists), Superia Clark, Hadley Lewicki and Kylla Henry all three goals for the Senators.
Emma Massey scored for the Spartans with Guilia Sweet and Jordan Hand combining for six saves.
Caesar Rodney 15, Appoquinimink 10: Rylie Faircloth tallied four goals with Lauren Wark scoring three for the Riders (3-0).
Lyndsey Weller (2 assists), Ella Price and Elle Roberts (1 assist) all scored twice with Melissa Dolt making six saves.
Archmere 17, Polytech 7: Elizabeth Szell (1 assist) while Madison Todd had two in the Panthers’ season-opening loss.
Boys’ volleyball
Indian River 3, MOT Charter 0: The Indians picked up the victory by scores of 25-9, 25-13, 25-10.
Conrad 3, Smyrna 1: The Red Wolves handed the Eagles their first loss, 25-20, 25-17, 11-25, 25-21.
Jalen O’Neal had nine kills and an ace for Smyrna while Walter Paytoh had seven assists.
College baseball
DSU takes split: Delaware State bounced back from a 15-0 loss to UMDES to top the Hawks, 5-4, in a MEAC doubleheader.
Alec Rodriguez (Dover) singled home Tre’Zhan Selby with the winning run in the eighth for the Hornets (2-4 MEAC, 5-9 overall). Alan Alonso hit his third home run of the season.
James Madison 7, Delaware 5: Joey Loynd and Aidan Kane each belted home runs but the Blue Hens (10-9) couldn’t overcome an early 7-1 deficit in dropping their CAA opener.
College equestrian
DSU falls in ECAC semis: Delaware State’s bid for its first equestrian conference since 2017 fell a few points short on Friday.
The third-seeded Hornets lost to No. 2 Tennessee Martin in an ECAC
Tournament semifinal at the State Fairgrounds in Harrington. The final match score was 10-10, but the Skyhawks won by 15 points in raw scoring to claim the victory.
Tennessee Martin took four of five contests on the Flat, the final competition of the match, to even the score and force the tiebreaker.
Tennis
Brengle advances in Miami: Madison Brengle knocked off 30th-ranked Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets to advance to the third round of the Miami Open on Friday afternoon.
It was the fourth victory over a top-30 player in the last four years for the Dover native. Brengle also improved her WTA ranking to move up to No. 55 with the win.
She needed an hour and 10 minutes to dispatch Samsonova on Friday, winning 6-4, 6-0. The third set took just 25 minutes.
Brengle began the tournament with a win over wild card Alex Eala 6-2, 6-1.
She will face either Iga Swiatek, ranked No. 2 in the world, or Viktorija Golubic in the third round.
