Cape Henlopen High built a six-goal halftime lead before registering a 15-11 victory over Sussex Academy in their girls’ lacrosse showdown on Wednesday night.
The win was the 21st in a row for the Vikings (6-0), who haven’t lost to a Delaware school since 2009. Wednesday’s four-goal margin was Cape’s closest game against an in-state program since an 11-10 win over Ursuline last April.
Louise Rishko 4 goals, 2 assists), Elizabeth Rishko (3 goals, 1 assist) and Maren Buckaloo (3 goals, 1 assist) all paced the Vikings, who out-shot Sussex Academy, 27-24. Anna Lopez made 10 saves.
Leading the Seahawks (5-1) were Annabella Guckes (4 goals, 2 assists), Macy Steinwedel (3 goals, 1 assist) and Madison Leeper (3 goals, 2 assists). Peyton Hagy made six saves.
Dover 15, Smyrna 3: Kyleigh Dill netted six goals for the Senators, who opened up a 10-2 halftime advantage before improving to 6-0.
Also leading Dover were Superia Clark (4 goals, 3 assists), Ashtyn Torbert (3 goals, 3 assists) and Kylla Henry (2 goals). The Senators got 11 saves from Shiana Hall-Carter.
Jenna Davis scored twice for the Eagles with Addison Beamer making nine saves.
Indian River 14, Lake Forest 13: The Indians outscored the Spartans, 10-8, in the second half to rally for the win.
Sophomore Kylie Harris (2 assists) netted 10 of IR’s goals with Madison Geppi (1 assist) scoring the other three. Caylee Schmidt made six saves for the Indians.
Emma Massey had eight goals for the Spartans, who out-shot IR, 25-24, Giulia Sweet made six saves.
Boys’ lacrosse
Caesar Rodney 17, Polytech 5: Patrick Craig netted four goals and seven assists as the Riders picked up the Henlopen North win.
Brendan Wark added five goals and an assist with Parker Smith scoring three goals for CR, which led 8-1 at halftime.
Milford 13, Sussex Tech 6: The Buccaneers out-scored the Ravens, 9-2, in the second half to break away to the North victory.
Anthony Iafornaro tallied five goals for Milford while Shane Sylvester added three goals and a pair of assists. Devin McNamara made 10 saves.
Smyrna 14, Dover 1: The Eagles downed the Senators in a Henlopen North matchup.
Baseball
Smyrna 9, Polytech 3: The Eagles scored five runs in the third to break open a scoreless Henlopen North contest.
Connor Wilson, Derek Davis, Junior Durnall, and Nolan Oakley all had RBI in the inning with Jake Macey pitched four-plus innings to earn the win.
The Panthers were paced by Connor Bartlett, Braden Moran and Alexander Newman.
Delmar 3, Laurel 0: Starting pitcher Bryce Hendricks, who struck out nine in 5.2 innings and Ryder Keidel combined to throw a two-hit shutout for the Wildcats.
Tucker Pierson, who doubled, and Keidel both drove in runs.
Timmy Jones struck out six in 5.1 innings ffor the Bulldogs with Jayden Snyder contributing a double.
Girls’ soccer
Smyrna 4, Sussex Academy 1: Desiree Zapata netted three goals for her fourth hat trick of the season to lead the Eagles.
Kelly Barr added a goal and an assist with Halle Geiger making six saves. Smyrna finished with advantages of 20-7 in shots and 10-2 in corner kicks.
Tayler Flaherty scored for the Seahawks with Emma Westbrook stopping 16 shots.
Boys’ volleyball
Indian River 3, Sussex Academy 0: The Indians downed the Seahawks by scores of 25-11, 25-14, 25-20.
Cape Henlopen 3, Newark 0: The Vikings (5-0) posted a 25-10, 25-7, 25-17 win over the Yellowjackets.
Charles Casas had five kills and an ace, Talan Stephens had three kills and five aces and Ethan Shuttleworth had three aces and 16 assists for Cape.
College baseball
Delaware 6, Rider 2: Delaware scored four runs in the sixth inning before winning their sixth game in a row.
The Blue Hens advance to the Liberty Bell Classic final where they will face Villanova on April 19 at Citizens Bank Park. UD’s winning streak is its longest since 2017.
Bryce Greenly (Milford) ignited the rally with a leadoff homer to left in thee sixth. Greenly, Jake Dunion and Joey Loynd each finished with three hits.
Dom Velazquez (Dover) struck out three while not allowing a hit in three innings of relief.
College softball
Delaware 20, Lehigh 2: The Blue Hens scored a season-high 20 runs, including 16 in the second inning, to improve to 21-11.
Julz Garber had two extra-base hits and six RBI for Delaware while Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) scored three runs and had three RBI.
College lacrosse
WOMEN, Hofstra 16, Delaware 11: The Pride out-scored the Blue Hens, 7-1, in the fourth quarter to rally for the CAA victory.
Goalie Mercy McCarthy made 10 saves for Delaware (0-2 CAA, 3-9 overall) in a contest that featured nine ties.
