Local roundup: Cape girls in 13th straight finals; Lydics shine in Henlopen golf

Top-seeded Cape Henlopen High pulled away down the stretch to post a 21-11 victory over No. 4 Tower Hill in the DIAA girls’ lacrosse state semifinals at Delaware State’s Alumni Stadium Tuesday evening.

The Vikings outscored the Hillers, 12-6, in the second half to reach the DIAA state title game for the 13th year in a row.

Cape Henlopen will be trying to win the program’s 13th straight state crown when it faces No. 3 Tatnall on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. The two programs last met in last year’s state finals, with the Vikings posting a 17-10 win.

Seniors Maren Buckaloo (2 assists) and Kelly Bragg both tallied six goals for Cape on Tuesday. Elizabeth Rishko (4 goals), Louise Rishko (3 goals, 5 assists) and Molly Mendes (2 gials, 4 assists) also paced the Vikings.

Goalie Anna Lopez made seven saves for Cape, which outshot the Hillers, 29-22.

Tatnall 17, Sussex Academy 8: The third-seeded Hornets kept the No. 2 Seahawks from reaching the state finals for the first time.

Henlopen South champion Sussex Academy finishes the season at 15-2. Its only other loss this season was to Cape Henlopen.

Golf

S. Lydic, Seahawks roll in Henlopen: Sophomore Sarah Lydic won her second straight individual title while she and her Sussex Academy teammates took the top three spots in winning the Henlopen Conference golf championship on Tuesday.

Lydic fired a 67 to win by four strokes over sister, Hannah Lydic (71), while teammate Sawyer Brockstedt was third with a 74 in the 18-hole event played at Plantation Lakes in Millsboro. It’s the second straight year that the Lydic sisters finished first and second in the tournament.

Polytech’s Quinn Glass (78) was fourth while Caesar Rodney’s Evan Gebhart and Joey Crissman tied for fifth with 79s.Sussex Academy posted a team score of 298 followed by CR (323) and Polytech (336).

College baseball

Four Hens earn CAA honors: Four Delaware baseball players earned all-conference accolades as the All-Colonial Athletic Association Teams were announced.

Third baseman Joey Loynd was named to the All-CAA first team, first baseman Joseph Carpenter was selected to the second team, and shortstop J.J. Freeman and centerfielder Dominic Ragazzo were honorable mention picks.

Loynd batted .298 while leading the team and tying for third in the league with 45 RBI. He recorded 54 hits while adding 33 runs scored, 12 doubles and eight home runs.

Carpenter, who earns All-CAA second team honors for the second consecutive year, leads the CAA with 19 doubles, while he ranks second with 112 total bases and tied for third with 63 hits. He batted .310, ranking second on the squad with 41 RBI and eight homers.

UD’s Klapak wins award: Delaware junior righthander Zach Klapak was named Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week.

Klapak tossed seven scoreless innings to earn his team-leading sixth win of the season during a 4-0 shutout of Northeastern. He scattered just three hits while striking out six, and did not allow a runner past second base.

Klapak is the third Blue Hen to earn CAA Pitcher of the Week honors this season, along with Wyatt Nelson and Joey Silan.
